Unsung Pokémon Heroes

The 'mon who deserve more love...

There can be no doubt that Pikachu is the most recognisable Pokémon. We'd wager that even someone who has never played a Pokémon game before would recognise him. Yet while some Pokémon get all the attention, there are plenty of Pokémon who are very useful to have in your team but don't get the recognition they deserve. Well, here's our collection of the most under-rated Pokémon from Platinum and how to get the very best from them. Let us know if you disagree with our selection by commenting below...

Floatzel

What 'em?

You'll see a lot of these guys on your travels, and because they're so common a lot of players underestimate Floatzel. But he's a big team player, capable of jumping in to take down troublesome opponents and causing big damage in a short amount of time.

Why 'em?

Two things are important with Floatzel: speed and power. He's faster than most Pokémon by default, but is uncatchable with HM03 Surf when it's raining. And with a simple moveset that brings in TM14 Blizzard you've got yourself a Pokémon that's great for substituting in against those pesky Dragons, and that can even put up a decent showing against Grass types.

Where to catch 'em!

Floatzel and its unevolved form, Buizel, are all over the place. Check the Fuego Ironworks earlier in the game, or look on any of Routes 213, 218, 221, 224 and 230. They're easy to catch too, so there's no excuse for not trying it out.

Magneton

What 'em?

A dual Electric and Steel type Pokémon, Magneton is a lightweight when it comes to absorbing punishment, but it's good at minimising damage and can be used as a powerful one-shot attack against specific Pokémon.

Why 'em?

Magneton has a great Special Attack stat, and is resistant to 12 types of attack and immune to one (Ghost type). If you can get it to level 60 you'll have Magnet Rise and Zap Cannon, and by teaching it TM33 Reflect you'll have an Electric type that's very frustrating to fight. Equip TM64 Explosion and Magneton can be an instant trade-off against any nasty surprises in your opponent's team.

Where to catch 'em!

This is a Pokémon you can get early by catching and evolving a Magnemite. On Route 222 or inside the Fuego Ironworks they turn up every so often, and are quite easy to catch when they do. Get them to level 30 and they'll evolve into Magneton.

Lapras

What 'em?

You might recognise Lapras from the anime, but here it's just a powerful tank of a Pokémon. It can't be caught until you've beaten the Gym Leaders, but that's just about when you start needing a punching bag in your party to absorb some serious damage from your tougher opponents. Despite the usual Water type weaknesses, Lapras is worth trying out for the role.

Why 'em?

Lapras has a gigantic base HP stat of 130, and automatically learns Ice Beam and Confuse Ray. When you add a TM44 Rest to that mix you have a Pokémon that can deal out an awful lot of damage, and take a great deal in return. And for simple power, you can't beat Sheer Cold, a move Lapras learns at level 55 that automatically knocks out opponents of a lower level about a third of the time.

Where to catch 'em!

Lapras appears in the water in the Victory Road caves - you'll catch them by surfing around, and they'll crop up in around one in ten of the fights. They're easy enough to catch with some Water Poké Balls.

What about Magnazone? The evolved form of Magnaton? Just level up Magnaton in any bit of Mount Coronet, and tuda!

  2. SoulSilver IV Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 15:57

See, they may be unloved, but that's probably because a good chunk of them fall into the tiers below the standard battling environment. I would like to see a Clefable take on Garchomp and win. ;)

Why don't you use the HG/SS Sugimori art for the Johto 'Mon now? Also, you accidentally used Buisel's art in place of Floatzels. This happened in the magazine too - do you just copy and paste the saved documents onto the site?

If we're on the subject of unsung heroes, I think that the fifth movie was underrated. Latias and Latios are amazing (once you get over the squeaking), and deserve more love imo.

    Aww... jumpluff is cute!!!!

    But I hate Pokemon.

  4. PsychoPikmin Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 16:04

    Mudkipz.

  5. Callum D Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 16:15

Great feature but I don't think Dragonite is that under loved. I love em. And with the upcoming HG/SS they will be more popular!

  6. Casplen Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 16:21

Completely agree with the floatzel part...i have one with ice beam not blizzard. They're ace!

RIGHT. There are so many things wrong with this.

For starters, Lapras. Sheer Cold. Quite simply, NO. Competitively, Sheer Cold is banned, and extremely frowned upon. Also, about your comment about using it to soak up hits:

Keep in mind that Lapras should not be used as a replacement to the bulky Water-type, as its Ice typing adds very common weaknesses in Fighting and Rock without covering its Grass and Electric weaknesses.

pretty much explains why Lappy shouldn't be used as a bulky water. Also, Stealth Rock weakness.

Now, Floatzel. Surf and Blizzard don't work on a physical attacker, babes. Instead, you should try Ice Punch and Waterfall. It's not rocket science. Jeez.

Also, Magneton? Try again! Magnezone is OU for a good reason. With Magnet Pull allowing it to trap any Scizors Choice-Locked onto Bullet Punch and a 4x resistance to Steel, it basically walls the most used pokemon in the OU metagame. Thunderbolt gives it a nice, strong STAB move. If you want it to be a Scizor counter, Hidden Power Fire is a must, otherwise Ice or Grass will suffice. Magnezone is a brilliant Special Attacker, don't waste that on moves like Zap Cannon and Thunder.

Clefable? Blissey does the same, but much better. That's pretty much all.

And, oh my god! You got something right! Your Crobat set was barely passable. Barely.

Dragonite is still OU, hardly underrated.

Annnnd finally, Jumpluff. Jumpluff is an underrated pokemon, quite a nice special defender/SubSeeder. Well done on that one.

There. That's my lesson, from a newbie to some noobs. Hope you read this and click this little link: http://www.smogon.com/

    Its for in-game. Leave it.

My fav pokemon was aways meowth.
As for the list, i agree Magmaton is awsome but you should have added Bulbasur. I was the only kid in my school that picked him as a starter pokemon.

  11. Athrun888 Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 17:07

Well as a pokemon fan that list was hardly underloved mon, I've used every single one of em at some point and the inclusion of Dragonite  that's one of the pseudo legendarys and hardly underloved, at least you didn't include tyranitar.
A better list of under loved mon would be
    1: Gardevior
    2: ludicolo
    3: Gorobyss
I can't be bothered to think of more but those mon are quit good if used properly and thier less known.

  12. Havak Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 17:10

Well, sorry, but this was a really bad feature. I don't want to go through with a fine tooth comb and pick out every single bad or incorrect point, so I'll just note a few.

Why did you use an image of Buizel instead of Floatzel? I'm sure this is the second time you've done that now, surely it's not hard to notice the difference, or find an image of the Pokémon you're talking about.

Why suggest Magneton, when it's incredibly easy to level up your Magneton one level in Mt. Coronet to evolve it? Considering this feature is probably for the in-game only player.

Don't suggest Hyper Beam, it's not 'ever-reliable' by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn't have full accuracy, it requires a recharge turn which gives your opponent (or the AI) a free move to do as they wish if you don't KO them. You suggested Dragon Dance and Outrage, which aid or benefit from the physical Attack stat, Hyper Beam is a special attack. Above all this, Normal-type moves without STAB, which are special moves, when you've already suggested physical moves, is not a good idea. Normal-type moves hit no other types for super effective damage, and they're resisted by many types, with even a type being immune to them. If you want to suggest a special move on Dragonite, it should be Draco Meteor.

Hire me and let me do a Pokémon feature please :) ask Kinneas, he will offer his up-most support I assure you.

  13. Nuclear GX Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 17:12

Metagross will always be number one in my books

  14. Kinneas Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 17:18

Hello, as winner of your last tournament - and therefore the smartest person in the world when it comes to pokémon - I can vouch that you should give Havak (who has won all the other tournaments) a job in your magazine writing articles that are actually good and accurate. I feel that Havak would be a great addition to your writing staff as you don't have many articles that are good or accurate and he can change this. He is also a much nicer guy than I am.

Also, the most unloved pokémon is dunsparce. I bet you forgot he existed when you wrote this article didn't you? That just proves how unloved he is.

  15. Mr Resettio Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 17:37

    screw that whole list.

you need munchlax, jigglypuff and lucario

  16. ILoveWii Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 17:58

The most unloved Pokemon is Qwilfish. Most people deny its existance.

Anyway people, leave ONM alone, they're not crazy Pokenuts and are only giving basic advice for when you're playing the game. Acting all clever and nerdy isn't going to help.

  17. Jedi Metroid Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 19:16

    Lucario isn't on there?

Ah well, I suppose that means he gets loads of love already <3

The idea was pkmn you can catch in platinum of those 3 Gardevoir is the only one you can catch on it (unless you have sapphire in your GBA socket and not everybody does). Also Gardevoir is my friends fave and I'm sure he's not the only one.

    screw that whole list.

    Unloved?!

  19. LightSamus Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 20:19

Yes, you're right. Its for begginers to learn. Not you stupid Poke Nerds (yes, that's their names now, not talking about ONM, the forum members).

I wonder if the Poke Nerds ever get bored of Pokemon and want to play different games.

Of course we do...we have the PS3 just like everybody else. We play much more Xbox than pookmekmon, just like most people. It's just we decided to learn a few easy facts =/

    Also:

Also Gardevoir is my friends fave and I'm sure he's not the only one.

gtfo, he's my friend now :|

    Unless he dislikes Venomoth.

  23. Andy88 Monday 12th Oct 2009 at 21:37

What an interesting idea for an article. Interesting to see some unusual Pokemon strategies, although I wouldn't think that Dragonite fits into this category.

I like to use Lanturn for it's Thunder Wave/Confuse Ray Combo, its electric and water attacks, and its many resistances.

"Floatzel is uncatchable with HM03 in Rain"...

Eh? Floatzel cannot learn surf in the wild, and it's speed simply doubles in rain. No pokemon is uncatchable (apart form other trainer's pokemon).

I doubt he meant it literally. 'uncatchable', As in, fast. Not 'cannot catch it with a pokeball'.

On the other hand, if the previous meaning is exactly what ONM intended, you have my apologies :)

And yeah, this artivle may not be 100% perfect for competetive blah blah blah, but its not FOR that. Its some pretty experienced guys telling beginners what they think would work (as well as saying which pokemon they felt needed more love), and giving us an oppurtunity to comment on the pokemon WE felt were unloved. Is all the b****ing necessary?

I don't know about you but I prefer the original Sugimori watercolours for the first two sets of 'mon - they look so much better to me. I was really disappointed when the illustrations changed but...thats progress for you.

I like Lapras, one of the pokemon that I actually bothered to train to Lv.100 and waste loads of stat-raising items on.

Actually since you can encounter them (okay their previous evos) when fighting against trainers in the game you can run a gts search and get one off there without the aid of the gba slot.

    Dudes! Screw Floatzel!
    It's all aboot the Buizel!
Raise of Hands, who'd rather have a Buizel in there team over a Floatzel?

Train it with Power Weights and Such, and it's just a Mini-Floatzel, but cuter.

  31. mr FBE Tuesday 13th Oct 2009 at 19:32

I always liked Haunter. If you could get the opponent to sleep, hit it with dream eater/ nightmare and you were away

I also always thought scyther, magmar, electabuzz, hitmonchan, arcanine and ninetales just looked cool.

i mean who wouldn't want a pet arcanine or ninetales?

those of you who said no YOU LIE!

    No.

... I have a Porygon-2 because I think it's cuter than Porygon-Z. And a few other fully unevolved ones just because I think they're cute/look better. They can still put up a fight too. :3~ And they deserve as much love as their evolved forms.

    --

All in all, an alright list of underrated 'mon, except Dragonite. EVERYONE I know has a Dragonite. Except me.

  35. sciqueen Wednesday 14th Oct 2009 at 16:57

Floatzel is an ugly Pokemon, just like every Pokemon from DPP.

And would the Pokemon Battle know-it-alls get a life, please.

    I take offence.

    Or Gengar?
    Or even Absol?

Guess that means those 3 are loved

  40. Red-Wolf Thursday 15th Oct 2009 at 22:49

Lucario is my favourite. He's nothing special in the stats department, but he's just so cool. And if you can hatch on the icy summit of Monut Coronet and survive a deadly battle with Sirius, your going to hold a special place in my heart. Even if your just a few dozen lines of code in a video game.

floatzal is awesome when used correctly though but its PHYSICAL

  43. weelouscotland Saturday 17th Oct 2009 at 14:08

Ok I'm really weird and the first pokemon game I played was emerald, so now my faves are:

Aaron(have you seen it it's so cute +plus steel and whatever other one it is.)
Mudkip(so cool, it could learn earth and water moves)
    Munchlax(just awesome)
Taillow(yep the first pokemon people met was a bird like in all the other games.)
Zigzagoon(a hedgehog what more is there to say.)

These are some of my favourites go on slag me.
    :P

I think that Furret is an un loved pokemon. Well, it is until soulsliver and heartgold comes out

exploud is an amazing pokemon you can teach nearly any type off move e.g fire blast, focus blast and overheat. :D
