For today's Mario feature we've turned to one of the most popular topics on the ONM forum. Power-up ideas for the next Mario game. From the moment HNF1 created the thread in 2009, it has been packed with amazing ideas and, at the time of writing, it is now a whopping 105 pages long! Perhaps it's not surprising - after all power-ups are an important part of the Mario series and after creating some amazing abilities for the Galaxy games (Bee Mario, Cloud Mario, the Yoshi power-ups), Miyamoto and his team will be hard pushed to better them for the next Mario game. Perhaps they could use some of your ideas. Here are our favourites...
Bullet Bill Mario
Original idea from: Darkrai
Mario becomes a Bullet Bill with eyes and a moustache. With this power-up, Mario will constantly be moving forwards and he can boost forwards. He can move up and down at a decent speed and will knock out enemies by hitting them full-on, but if they touch the top or bottom of the bullet, you'll lose the power-up. You'll lose the power-up if you hit a wall but you can break a pipe if you boost into one.
Original idea from Splinter
In real life Salamanders like to live in watery environments but according to Greek mythology they are resistant to fire. So this idea of Mario as a salamander kind of makes sense. With this suit, Mario can now swim in lava. This would lead to more lava-dwelling monsters other than Blargg being created. Salamander Mario can still walk normally on land and if quickly changing direction, a small spurt of lava would fly in that direction.
Original idea from: Cyberguy
Mario grows spikes all over his body and can roll into a ball, helping him kill weaker enemies and move over spikes without getting hurt. He can even stick to spiky walls and roll up them to reach new areas. However, special new spiky enemies will be able to withstand his attacks.
Original idea from: MS
Mario now looks just like a little leprechaun fairy, green hat and all that stereotypical jazz. With this power-up Mario can now use the coins he's collected to throw at enemies. Quite simply, you can throw coins straight at enemies for as long as your coin count goes down to zero. The coins can be used to knock enemies backwards and throwing several at once would knock enemies back further away from you.
Original idea from: giantchuchu
With a spin, Mario will send a gust of wind in the direction he faces, sending enemies flying back. Also, by performing a spin jump, Wind Mario can transform into a tornado for seven seconds. This makes him invincible and allows him to glide across water.
Original idea from: mewtwolover19
Yoshi turns purple, grows wings and gets a longer tail. Now Mario can fly Yoshi, and once in the air he will glide downwards unless you use the jump button to thrust a little. He can also breathe fire directly in front of him, knocking out most enemies or setting them on fire.
Original idea from: Brid
Grab a turbo mushroom and Mario's full speed will be slightly faster, enabling him to run up walls. You can also now jump further from and run over short bodies of water. For larger areas of water you'd need to run at full speed and jump each time you come into contact with water. You will also be able to slide further underneath things when crouching and your wall jumps will be faster.
