Shigeru Miyamoto has said that he wanted the original Donkey Kong game to scroll like his later Mario platformers.
In an interview on the Wii's US Nintendo Channel, Miyamoto admitted that the original Donkey Kong game wasn't what he had originally planned.
"I actually wanted to make it scroll," he said. "But the circuit board wasn't capable of doing that so we made four various levels which each can be shown in a single screen. And that worked out pretty well."
No kidding, Miyamoto! Donkey Kong went on to become hugely successful and launched the career of Mario.
He also said the fixed screen had it's advantages. "When you play on a fixed screen you can plan things out because you can see the entire level."

Of course Donkey Kong has been scrolling with the best of them for a number of years. You can find out what his latest side-scrolling platformer is like by reading our Donkey Kong Country Returns review.
