Nintendogs + Cats review: 38/40 in Famtisu

Do you think it will be the best 3DS launch game?

The first review of Nintendogs + Cats has appeared in the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famtitsu. According to the magazine, it is the best Nintendo 3DS launch game, receiving an amazing 38/40 review score.

The magazine praised the game's visuals, pointing out that "the fur is realistic." You can see how realistic the new animals look by watching the latest Nintendogs + Cats video.

Moving on, the wireless elements are also praised while the magazine dismisses the idea that this is a game aimed at a younger audience by saying that it can "be enjoyed by anyone."

- Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition: 34/40

You can't really say that until you play it. From what I see in the screenshots, the graphis are impressive, and it seems to have a great deal of new features and things to do; and just like the original Nintendogs, it could go on to display the features of the 3DS perfectly. Perhaps Nintendogs + Cats may completely deserve the score that it was given. But yeah, as i said, we'll have to wait and see.

How can you say that when you've never played it? :/

They must have under-rated Layton! And how can a pet sim get a score equal to 95%, a game with no plot, proper characters or proper gameplay? Dislike.

i wasnt expecting 38/40 but still guess with the challenges, graphics and cuteness(:P) its gonna get high marks

If you did a little research, you'd know that Nintedogs got a perfect 40/40 first time around.

And you could say the same about puzzle games or (except for gameplay) racing games. Also, there is some gameplay in there, like when you play frizbee and the like.

I won't be getting Nintendogs + Cats, as I didn't really enjoy the original that much. It was fun when it came out but if you go back to it the original is pretty bad. Anyway, glad to see SSFIV3DE and Ridge Racer got good scores. Can't wait to read ONM's reviews!

That sounds good, but still a shock with Professor Layton. I know Nintendogs is great, but beating Professor Layton by 6/40 is quite shocking.

Each to their own remember, im sure that both games are just as good, but as reviews they have to look at both bad points and good points in a game. Maybe the 3d effect just works that much better in nintendogs than Prof. layton.

Hopefully this solidifies that i made a good choice in opting for Nintendogs + Cats (French Bulldog Version) as my game of choice for launch day with my shiny new Cosmos Black 3ds! 8)

As with all ds launch games

    Roll ON March 18!

Nintendogs and Cats clearly got it's score from being a Nintendo title. A pet sim is a pet sim. It doesn't matter how good the graphics are, it simply cannot compare to a game with characters and a plot.
I for one am just happy that our own Nintendo magazine is nowhere near as biased.

    Same here. :(

If its anything like Nintendogs for the DS then it deserves nothing like that score. I'm expecting the biggest improvement of all time if I were to go by that score.

  18. RubbishGamer Wednesday 23rd Feb 2011 at 18:24

But the original Nintendogs got 40/40 :?

Although the original Red Steel got 91% in ONM, whilst it's sequel got 80-something, in addition ONM have claimed they would rate Red Steel lower now after the hype. So assuming the original Nintendogs is now worth 35/40 (although some comments suggest it's worth MUCH lower), 38/40 should be a good sign.

    lol

Surprised this is higher than Layton. In fact, I'd say Layton got a low score for the game that it is. Sure Nintendogs "can be enjoyed by everyone", and it may have "realistic fur", but it is essentially an upgraded version of the original. Layton however is packed with completely new content, story and puzzles alike, which is why I am quite taken back by its seemingly average review score. It's unfair that they seem to be downgrading it by saying that it doesn't take good use of the 3D in puzzles, it should be reviewed for what is has, not what it's lacking.

This isn't true. Games with no specific characters or plot can be played endlessly and differently every time. It isn't limited to Nintendogs + Cats; for example, Animal crossing is a brilliant game in it's own right, with a large fan base, and no specific characters of plot. Who's to say a "simple pet sim" can't be as deep as other games; To dismiss a game and call it's score bias and false because of a genre is both ignorant and trivial.

And anyway, not all magazines are biased. Perhaps Nintendogs + Cats got the score it did for being a good game. I'm going to end with my previous comment about none of us even playing the game yet; i've not said nintendogs + cats will be either bad or good, and i'm not dismissing your opinion. You are basing your opinion of the game by assuming a review is bias and alienating the game because of the genre it is in.

really can't wait for this game :D

  22. fisher2007 Wednesday 23rd Feb 2011 at 22:11

not gonna buy this because the first nintendogs was boring.

Great score can't wait to get it

  24. Mart2006 Thursday 24th Feb 2011 at 11:00

    Hypocrisy!!

Aren't ONM always the ones saying: "if you want to find out a review score, by the mag"?

Understandably, it is a Japanese magazine, but surely that doesn't change anything regarding giving away review scores. :?:

  25. SuperLuigiYoshi Thursday 24th Feb 2011 at 12:03

95% is a bit much, don't you think? After all, that's only 2% lower than the Galaxy games! It'll probably be lower when ONM review it though...
