Wii Vitality Sensor still under development

So when will it be released?

Nintendo is set to release a successor to the Wii console in 2012 but that doesn't mean it's finished with Wii. Andriasang reports that the company has confirmed that the Wii Vitality Sensor peripheral is under development at its earnings briefing which iis taking place in Tokyo today.

Satoru Iwata revealed the Vitality Sensor at the E3 games show in 2009.

A peripheral that can measure your pulse, Iwata said it could be used to help you relax: "Everyone under pressure in our stressful society could use this to help us relax in a videogame. Videogames could be made for people to unwind or even fall asleep."

Although we were told that it would launch in 2010, it didn't appear at last year's E3 with Miyamoto suggesting that the peripheral is too relaxing for the exciting annual games conference.

Since then we've heard nothing about the Vitality Sensor but according to Nintendo it is still being developed. So will it be too relaxing for E3 2011?

Surely if the Wii2 is out in 2012 shouldn't they make it for use with that?

I'm just praying that this isn't the new gimmick the wii 2 will use .

Surely, if you fell asleep, the Wii and the TV would still be on... and your finger would have a clip on it and be distorted and pinched... Well, what a way to waste elec...

I doubt this is going to be used for anything other than fitness games on Wii. Hopefully it will be built in to the Wii 2 controller as it has potential for horror games e.g. making your more or less scared depending on your heart rate.

Speaking of which, there's a rumor that Retro studios is working on Eternal Darkness 2 for the new console...

Please, just no. No. No. No. The Wii Vitality Sensor was a bad idea from the start. When people start saying "Well...it could be used for fitness games...and maybe...erm...horror games", it quickly becomes apparent that it's uses are limited, and that it doesn't really serve much purpose. It's not eye-catching, and shouldn't be part of the Wii, the Wii 2, or anything else for that matter.

I completely agree, how the hell can this be used with a game that is decent??????????!!!!!!!!

    I hate it.
It makes you wear a hideous white thing that just measures your heart rate. I could do that with my hand.

And you wouldn't be able to use the nunchuck.

Don't care to be honest. As long as we don't get a 20 minute thing at E3 2011 about it then I don't mind. What with Project Cafe and all that though, I don't think we will be seeing the Vitality Sensor at E3 2011 at all.

TOO relaxing? :D Now thats hillarious, but i get what he means, when i play a game, i wana be excited and in the action, not laying down on my sofa in the afternoon, and i thought the Wii was supposed to be a console based around movement? Not sitting down with your finger in a sensor all day!

Really? I thought this had been ditched. Lets be honest, it is hardly going to be stealing any attention away from the other big, recent events like the 3DS, wii 2 and skyward sword. But does anyone want this? I don't think so. After the cold reception this idea has got from gamers in the past i am surprised nintendo are still making this. Sure, it isn't aimed at gamers, but i don't see the casual crowd buying this much either.

Though having said this, i am a little curious as to what this is about.

I think this could work in a more "hardcore" if it did the opposite to what Nintendo are saying, imaging your in a horror game, your here something, your heart begins to thud. The game thinks "ha ha he's scared time to send in the zombies" they attack, causing your heart to beat faster so more zombies pop up, intensifying the action. Yes I know, mean developers, the zombies can smell fear

Interesting that they haven't dropped it yet. The only real use it has is in fitness games and the like in my opinion. If it is ever released I cant see it selling much.

    This indeed.
If they were trying to revitalize Wii sales before next year, pretty sure this may not be the way to go.

This is what Reggie will say at this years E3:
'Nintendo have reached it's greatest achievement yet: A fitness game in which you sit on a sofa all day.'

    Probably wouldn't buy it.
