3DS is the best Nintendo console

ONM readers vote for their favourite console of modern times

Nintendo 3DS is the best Nintendo console of the last two generations. That's the message from Nintendo fans who voted in a poll on the first ever live ONM Q & A yesterday.

The debate started when ONM reader zwii01 posed the question: 'What is the best Nintendo console?' Following on from that, ONM asked readers to vote for their favourite Nintendo console of recent times.

Nintendo 3DS came out on top with 41% of the votes ahead of Nintendo DS (22%), GameCube (21%) and Wii (11%).

ONM Reviews Editor Chris Scullion who chaired the Q & A said: "Considering it's only been out for a few months, it's amazing to see that Nintendo fans have voted for 3DS ahead of DS and GameCube. It just shows that people who own 3DS absolutely love it.

"Also, with games such as Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3D, Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D and Super Mario 3D on the way this year, you haven't seen the best of 3DS yet."

Missed the live webchat yesterday? You can still read the live ONM Q & A.

ONM will be back next Thursday for another Q & A.

    1st Comment!
No surprise then to be honest, but I thought the Wii would be a bit more popular. Waiting to get my own little bundle of joy. For the time being, I'll be like the 33% that went with the DS and Wii

I would say it's far too early to judge the 3DS, for me it is most certainly NOT the best Nintendo console simply for the fact that it has no games I want to play yet :P
Zelda OOT will be a start, but it has a long way to go until it reaches the line up we were promised. Then I have no doubt that it will rival some of Nintendos greatest, but for now it's far from its predecessors.

How can a console that has no A* games on it even qualify for the title best console?!

  4. LBDNytetrayn Friday 27th May 2011 at 11:45

Yeah... 3DS has the potential for greatness, but it is far, far too early to declare it the best, unless Face Raiders alone sold you on the purchase.

Let's check back in about three to five years...

I went for Gamecube, due to Luigi's Mansion, Wind Waker, Sunshine and good multi-format games! I avoided 3DS simply because it hasn't been out for long enough.

Quite clearly the DS is the better console, the 3DS has a long, long way to go to reach those heights.

ONM, stop conducting these unrepresentative polls!

I think it is too early to say that the 3DS is the best of Nintendo consoles. It's only been out for a few months and not many great games have come out as of yet. It could possibly be the best in a few years or so but right now it is too early to say that it is the best.

    Yeay a blog mention! :D
I have to agree with the comments here that its a bit too early to claim the 3DS as the best console at the moment, it does have a lot of great potential and the games line up looks great though! I personally went for the DS because essentially that is what got Nintendo into the casual gaming scene and made way for the Wii and 3DS while also catering to "hardcore" fans with the huge amount of RPG's and other great games.

Agree with some other comments. It has only been out for 2 months, how it be the best console??

    I voted 3DS and I loved the Q&A thing!
    I want more!
But could somebody like Gav or Neil join in as well?
    The more the merrier!

not really suprised by the outcome this always happens with a new console, i still stand by the gamecube

    wasn't gba involved

I voted for GameCube because it is the last console from an era of Nintendo which I have always loved. It was a time when they made games for their fans, and to heck with what everyone else wanted. That said, the DS and Wii have both become very strong consoles in their own right, and the Wii would have got my vote if the GameCube wasn't there. As for 3DS, it hasn't been out long enough. While I would choose it over a DS for now, the DS is the better console as the 3DS doesn't have enough good exclusive games.

The 3DS is just an evolution of the DS, i'd find it hard to even call it a new console let alone the "best Nintendo console"

  15. masamune Friday 27th May 2011 at 20:49

    A bit early isn't it?

  16. lemon003 Friday 27th May 2011 at 21:27

4% for GBA is an absolute disgrace.

My respect for this forum went down by a lot when I saw that I was pretty much the only one that voted for it.
I'm sure the 3DS will be a great handheld, but it's not yet.

Personally my favourite consoles and handheld have been the N64, the Gamecube and the DS. The N64 had some really great games and the graphical enhancements from the SNES are unbelievable. The Gamecube wasn't innovative but it made up for that in the sheer gameplay of it's games. Also do you remember how stylish that little cube was?! Finally the DS really brought new life into the handheld market. It had some deep, immersive rpgs and some fun casual games. It catered for everyone. Who can fault a system which had games like ace attorney and Ghost Trick? Maybe the 3DS will live up to its predecessor's high standard but only time will tell...

I'd say the DS was the best they made. No problems, all joy.

I honestly don't think the 3DS can qualify to be the best Nintendo console ever, not just yet anyway. We have only seen mainly launch games so far and a lot of them are just 'ok' games, with a few better ones amongst the line-up.
I would probably say that my favourite is the N64. It has a shed load of quality games and just has a bucket load of nostalgia about it for me. I really loved the Gamecube too.

I think you're comment just shows that you're way too early to judge it too, don't ya think? The fact that all the best games haven't came out yet, you're still judging it but because you think it - it must be right... Double standards, maybe something to think about

  23. Darkmaster118 Monday 30th May 2011 at 10:42

it COULD be the best console,
But my favorite will always be the GBA, it was my first console my parents let me get.

  24. RobertK Monday 30th May 2011 at 11:14

I voted for 3DS when the chat was on because of the enjoyment i get from literally just picking it up.

Regardless of the games that come out for it, I think the 3DS is the best console.
Just the amount that's in it like the gyroscope and the 3D cameras just leave you with so much to work with when making games.

Yes I do think it's too early to judge the performance of the 3DS solely on the games that have come out (whether they be the quality SSF4 and DOAD, I have both and am addicted) because it hasn't been out long enough yet.

ut as far as the actual console itself goes, it is beyond anything out there at the moment. The connectivity is second to none, so easy to connect to the internet and even with other players, and the fact that there are so many resources for developers to use in their games mean that a 3DS game will generally (I say generally because the Imagine series will come out eventually) be top quality.

That is why the 3DS is the best "console" in my opinion. For games, the DS/DSi would get my vote.
