Super Mario 3D: 5 things we'd like to see at E3 2011

Ahead of next week's E3 unveiling, Chris reveals his Mario 3D wish list

We're only one week away from what's certain to be one of Nintendo's most memorable E3 conferences ever, and amid all the hullabaloo surrounding the new Nintendo console it's worth remembering that Satoru Iwata has also promised we'll find out more about the next Super Mario game on 3DS.

As ONM's resident Mario addict, I've been tasked with listing the five things I'd love to see in Super Mario 3D. So, without further ado, here are five things that would have me whooping like an air-raid siren if they were revealed next week. In no particular order:

1. Super Mario Bros 3 suits

I know New Super Mario Bros Wii and the Super Mario Galaxy games have featured some fantastic suits in recent years (Cloud Mario and Penguin Mario being particular highlights) but I reckon it's about time for the Raccoon suit, the Hammer Brother suit, the Tanooki suit and (of course) the Frog suit to come out of retirement.

Yes, the haters would accuse Nintendo of a lack of imagination, but I don't care. I need my Frog Suit fix.

2) Playable characters

Luigi and Yoshi got a lot more attention in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and let's not forget Wario's inclusion in Super Mario 64 DS.

While having the ability to play as someone other than Mario wouldn't exactly make or break the game, it would be nice to mix things up a little bit. Luigi should be a definite but I'd also like to play as Peach.

3) Orchestral music

Much as I like the music in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I think we're all in agreement that the orchestral score in the Super Mario Galaxy games is far and away among the best music Nintendo has ever created.

It gives the game a more epic feeling and since the 3DS cartridges have plenty of space for it, I'm praying Nintendo sees the light and gives Super Mario 3D a fully orchestral soundtrack.

4) More classic enemies

In recent years we've seen some old Mario enemies making well-deserved comebacks, but some of my favourites are still missing in action.

I want to see the return of Chargin' Chucks and Rip Van Fish from Super Mario World, as well as Mouser and Wart from Super Mario Bros 2.

Maybe we could even have Mario finally making a trip back to Sarasaland for one world, bringing the enemies from Super Mario Land like Tatanga out of retirement?

5) Co-op

This is a big one. Having experimented with four-player multiplayer in the side-scrolling New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Miyamoto has still to crack it in the 3D Mario adventures.

He's said in the past that he once had an early test version of Super Mario 64 that had both Mario and Luigi on-screen, so it's clearly something he'd like to do.

The extra power of the 3DS means that at least two-player co-op with Mario and Luigi would be pretty special.

There we go. Obviously, I'm not expecting all my wishes to come true, but the more that do the happier I'll be.

Of course, as is tradition, I'm sure we can also rely on Miyamoto and Nintendo to introduce new ideas that we never knew we wanted until we try them out.

What do you want to see in Super Mario 3D?

    Co-op would be pretty cool.

  2. MistaChristopher Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 18:07

Please let the game have non-linear design.

  3. CyberGW Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 18:15

I really want a Co-op mode which can be Local, Online Friend or Online Random!
I think there should be special stars in the main mission which you need somebody to help you with but it's still possible to complete the game without it, just without all the stars!

all i want is the extra stuff to collect. three difficult to reach coins on each level. that gives the game lasting appeal that means i can play it for longer. the comet coins in galaxy two were too easy to collect. in nsmbwii they were perfect...

  5. Hylian_Grouch Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 18:48

also something good that you unlock at the end. i was so disappointed with world nine in nsmbwii as there wasnt a special boss at the end or a prize for finishing the game. letting you play as bowser would be cool...

I would also love an orchestra soundtrack like SMG. Lately in gaming I have been paying particular attention to the background music (de blob 2 for example) so I'd love to enjoy this on the 3DS.

Also, Lubba should return. Unlikely, but oh well.

Interesting that Miyamoto has tested co-op in Mario 64, I'd love to see co-op in a 3d mario game. How would it work though? Split screen like in teh LEGO co-op or what?

  9. HellfireComms Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 19:13

Co-op like in the super mario 64 2 test

  10. Argenthor Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 20:23

I dont need to play as extra characters, lest it go the way of some of the sonic games!

But orchestral music is a definite requirement.

  11. jaiv Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 20:27

Shigsy already confirmed that the Super Mario Bros. 3 suits will appear!

  12. Cyberguy Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 20:46

Co-Op would actually be really awesome.

  13. smalldude070 Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 21:25

If it did implement co-op I think it'd only work if there was a mode specifically for co-op and then a single player mode on top of that, almost like how Portal 2 is set up.

Online co-op with voice chat would also be brilliant but, that won't happen as this is Nintendo after all.

  14. ARWING64 Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 21:35

    I want all of those!!

  15. CrimsonViper Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 22:31

There have been 2 Super Mario Games which means the next will be the third. Or in other words, Super Mario Galaxy 3. Or in other words, Super Mario Galaxy 3...D?

  16. Link16 Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 23:08

I want lots of Yoshi, Super Mario Bros 3 suits, lots of Luigi and fun levels.

  17. Kirby8 Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 23:38

Love all of this! Also, if it's for 3DS...then something to do with streetpass. I'm sure they can think of something.

  18. cheatmaster30 Tuesday 31st May 2011 at 23:52

    1. Definitely agreed. Me personally, I'd prefer the Hammer Suit and Kuribo's Shoe over the Tanooki Suit and Frog Suit, but hey, them all returning would still be awesome.

    2. Definitely want Luigi to be playable again, and Yoshi as rideable would be awesome.

Not sure about Peach (maybe a post game bonus?), but Wario as playable? Guaranteed buy for me.

    3. Orchestral music is definitely needed.

    4. Damn yeah! Chargin' Chucks are some of the most unappreciated classic enemies in existance, and I'd love them to come back in a game.

Rip Van Fish I'm slightly neutral about, those creatures got really annoying in Super Mario World's water levels.

If you want to kow what enemies I'd also like to see, I'd love to see Roto Discs (those obstacles vanished after about Super Mario Land 2), Fishin' Boo (he was meant to be in New Super Mario Bros Wii, but was scrapped) and maybe Eeries.

    5. Co-op sounds great.

  19. MrFamicom Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 01:12

    Online co-op?

  20. Avalanche2114 Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 08:17

I would love to see the hammer brother suit and Kuribo's shoe to make a return. I'm not sure about the Tanooki suit and frog suit though. Tatanga needs to make a return at some point, even if it is just a miniboss. I don't really care if the music is orchestrated or not and I don't want playable characters in the game except for Mario and Luigi.

  21. Rabbid_girl Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 08:18

How about designing your own Mario levels (like in Mario Vs DK) and share your own and get ones that other people have made using streetpass? You can get different props from different stages that you can unlock as you progress through the game including enemies (Goombas, Koopa Troopas, ect.), blocks and platforms (? boxes, those bricky things, clouds, ect.) and various other things (Pipes, those hidden coins to collect, music from each level....)

    Just an idea

That's an awesome idea :o I want Lubba! I also like the ability to use the ar cards, basicly you draw a side scrolling cause out with your stylus over real life, you can add in enimies, coins pipes and a goal flag all on your table then let mario loose :D

  23. Waldy565 Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 10:18

3 and 4 are defo's! and the bit bout playable characters, you forgot wailuigi! how can you possibly not want to play as him :P

  24. RaidingRaichu Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 10:21

We need Toadsworth as a playable character.

  25. jct Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 10:33

The orchestral score will probably feature anyway, as I think Nintendo called the game a "mix of Galaxy and Mario 64".

But the prospect of the Raccoon suit returning is a mouth-wateringly good one.

And IT BETTER NOT BE A SHORT GAME.

  26. tomutwit Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 10:47

ONLINE CO-OP LIKE IN PORTAL 2!!!

  27. Samurai Sonic Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 11:29

To be honest, the only thing I would like to see is some levels designed in a non-linear fashion, i.e. like 64. But I'm not too fussed about that, as this is going to be awesome however they make it. :P

  28. Harryh11 Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 13:40

Not all music has to be orchestral to be good.
    I want good music.

  29. HotShotGamer Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 14:23

  30. PokeRave Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 14:27

Co-op for sure and battles like the DS version

  31. Hylian koopa Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 16:37

Co-op would be awesome, but IT HAS TO BE DOWNLOAD PLAY  . Me and my bros. (Get it? bros.? Like in Mario Bros.? Aw, whatever...) cannot afford 3 copies of the game.

  32. Mmmyeah Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 at 17:09

Co-op like in the super mario 64 2 test

super mario 64x4. it was an idea for super mario 64 ds which involved 4-player multiplayer. i wouldn't be surprised to see multiplayer after it has been experimented with in the past, and even intergrated into another game, new super mario bros. wii.

i would like to see the game have a more open level design, like in super mario 64, where you explore this area, looking for challenges, as opposed to super mario galaxy, where you follow a set path until you reach the end of the level. don't get me wrong, i prefer galaxy to 64, but i would like to see this level design return, or maybe a mix between the two.

  33. nintendorulz Thursday 2nd Jun 2011 at 10:41

To be honest im still not hyped. Reserving judgement till E3.

  34. Quantum Raven Thursday 2nd Jun 2011 at 11:19

Well we now know that it's going to be a mixture of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy (1 and 2) so that alone should give Nintendo plenty of ideas but here's what I would like: It may not happen but how about a storyline where no-one is kidnapped and that the three princessess (Peach, Daisy and Rosalina) help to save the day (I'm not saying that I'm tired of the traditional Mario plot and I'm 200% sure that 99% of Bowser's plots do NOT actually involve the kidnapping of Princess Peach so I reckon that the reason why Bowser always kidnaps Peach is because he has some kind of ulterior motive), additional playable characters like in Super Mario 64 DS would be good I really would like to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Wario and Waluigi and even better ALL of them can ride on Yoshi when the situation calls for it and also some scenarios within levels can only be completed by certain characters like in Super Mario 64 DS (for example Wario could have a situation where he needs to find some treasure, Luigi could have a situation where he needs to clear an area from ghosts, Peach could have a situation where she must actually defend herself like in the Smash Bros. games rather than just fall to pieces like she always does in a Mario game, Daisy could have a situation where she has to find some flowers before the enemy can nick them and use them for the wrong purpose, Waluigi could have a situation where he must sneak through a certain area without being detected and Rosalina could have a situation where she has to defend her Lumas from attack) a hub world where you can actually collect things in because I wasn't really impressed with the fact that there was nothing to do in the Comet Observatory in Super Mario Galaxy and I wasn't a big fan of the world map in Super Mario Galaxy 2 because I think that the world map idea only works in side scrolling Mario games like New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii and that 3D Mario games should have a hub world, lots of power-ups including classic ones, new ones and even character specific ones and levels set not just in the Mushroom Kingdom but in Sarasaland, Isle Delfino, Vibe Island, Yoshi's Island and even in space and for the levels to have a more open design like in Super Mario 64.

  35. Gavin Rozee Friday 3rd Jun 2011 at 13:03

All I want are big open worlds, and a huge hub world full of secrets. Basically, Super Mario64, but modern, with all new levels and locations etc.

Big open worlds and a hub are what set 2D and3D Mario games apart.

  36. chojin Friday 3rd Jun 2011 at 14:45

I would prefer SM 3D to a be a 2D side scroller (like NSMB) but with 3D depth.

    I preffer Mario in 2D

  37. jamiedance Friday 3rd Jun 2011 at 16:27

    Fludd :D

  38. Exempo Friday 3rd Jun 2011 at 23:10

Add waluigi into it!!! Stop neglecting him nintendo!!! I know people say he sucks but thats only because he doesnt appear as much as any of the others

  39. Harryh11 Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 13:21

Come on Scullion! Get to work and write another article. I'm waiting here.

  41. SuperDeano1 Monday 6th Jun 2011 at 10:12

I love chris' idea of Wart and tatanga coming back! I've been dreaming of this occurrence for donkey's now :/ also, Wario making a return as an enemy would be pretty cool. Either way, this games is gonna pretty much blow my sweaty socks clean off!

  42. Redfish20 Monday 6th Jun 2011 at 10:51

If you can complete the whole game without losing a single life then you are bestowed the honour of being allowed to play as The Chimp.
