You'll be able to download Pokédex 3D next week for free when the Nintendo 3DS eShop launches. It enables you to view the Pokémon from Pokémon Black and White in 3D and read all their essential details.

You'll also be able to use Augmented Reality Markers to watch them come to life and take a 3D photo of them. You can see the Markers in these screenshots.

It's not clear how these Markers will be distributed but you will be able to get posters in the August issue of Official Nintendo Magazine which goes on sale on 7 July.

As revealed earlier this week, you'll begin with 16 Pokémon in your Pokédex but you will be able to complete your Pokédex by wirelessly connecting with friends, via SpotPass or by scanning special Pokédex 3D AR Markers

Yes, each Pokémon in Pokédex 3D has its own individual Pokémon AR Marker - a small black and white image which brings the Pokémon to life in 3D through Augmented Reality.

You can place the Pokémon AR Markers anywhere you like and watch Pokémon jump out of the marker in 3D using Augmented Reality technology.

Set up scenes by placing more than one Pokémon AR Marker side by side and take a picture of your fully animated Pokémon together.

When using the AR Viewer, your Pokémon are fully animated and can be coaxed into performing special actions using Items - some items will result in different reactions from the Pokémon. You can try throwing various items their way to see how they react.

You can also use pictures you've already taken from your SD Card and add Pokémon to your pictures.

As for the Pokémon data, you'll be able to find out vital statistics but also more in-depth information such as at which level they evolve and at which level they learn new moves.

Are you going to download Pokédex 3D?

  4. richardcook Friday 3rd Jun 2011 at 16:12

I'll probably download it out of curiosity, but i'm not much of a fan of pokemon so it'll just be a quick glance at how it works and the AR cards -- does seem pretty awesome though

The game looks great! I was looking forward to the new ONM anyway, but the markers will make a great addition! :D

Pokemon battles on a table surface are quickly becoming a reality.

I hope it has all that general useless info about them. Like height, weight, eating habits and the like. Maybe even longer versions of the descriptions you get in the games. Will it have that voice that reads out the name and info when you point it at an ar card? If so i wan to hack it with GLaDOS's voice instead, where she list the basic facts, then states personal opinion. Like with smugleaf (its so natural to me i cant remember its real name lol), 'One of the 'starter pokemon' of the unova region. a little smug for a leaf isn't it? Some Aperture science habit rehabilitation tests should sort that'. It must be done.

you know those QR codes or whatever are supposed to give pokemon, couldn't we just use the codes from the issue with all the miis in the cover?

  17. retrotoad Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 09:10

Wow, this is looking increasingly awesome :) The character models look really smooth, and will look even better in 3D. Thanks Nintendo, it seems the 3DS is the gift that keeps on giving!

EDIT: A bit of a cheesy thing to say, but I'm excited :P

  18. Poke-J Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 11:17

Are they animated? Or boring old static 3D with a few poses like mii's or star pics?

  19. CyberGW Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 11:23

Wonder if you will be able to get the AR Markers from Club Nintendo or whether you will have to buy them....

  20. leomckitten Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 12:21

No. they're Mii specific. Hence the massive "Mii" in the middle.

  21. Blue Nose Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 15:39

So you can't just use one of the AR cards you have the now for it?

  22. Bakerstudios Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 15:53

This is starting to sound AMAZING! Perhaps they should make a Nintendogs style Pokemon game! Imagine walking your pet Eevee and lookin' at the dog walkers like ''Yo man, Pikachu's sick brother''.

  23. Deanio Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 16:38

Wow I'd never thought of how Emolga would look with his/her wings down but it looks fantastic

  24. rakashaka Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 16:50

    *flails arms* This Is AWESOME!

I can't help but think that a Pokémon Stadium remake is coming!?

  25. pokemanD Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 19:23

They each have their own individual markers? Won't that be a bit awkward after a while? I don't want to have to print off 649 individual cards!

  26. Linebeck013 Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 20:41

I will be downloading this first thing Tuesday morning, cant wait!

  27. Eragon Firesword Saturday 4th Jun 2011 at 22:39

Would it be too difficult to map fur on the pokemon? With the 3DS's level of technology?

  28. Chaos_Lord Sunday 5th Jun 2011 at 04:17

    sadly i don't have a 3DS :(
but the app is AWESOME :D

  29. Captain Kuchiki Sunday 5th Jun 2011 at 15:35

Why couldn't Pokédex 3D have just used the AR Cards included in the system, especially considering how using the "?" Card alone, we can render dozens of Miis.

Again, Nintendo are milking their cash cows.

  30. Egyfan Sunday 5th Jun 2011 at 18:04

    Awesoooooooooooome!!!!!!!! I hope it's permanent free... :D

Don't worry, you'll only need to print off around 150

This is only the Unova pokedex. :(

  32. Messi97 Sunday 5th Jun 2011 at 19:44

    WOO! Pokemon AR cards

That's a relief. Until they expand it with spotpass.

COOL i even have a load of pokemon on it because of http://matthewmc685.deviantart.com/art/ ... -212081703

  35. poketrainer91259 Thursday 9th Jun 2011 at 03:55

Just downloaded the 3d Pokédex July 7th. THE THING IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! By switching on spotpass you get 3 new pokémon each day. You send pokémon to your friends and receive pokémon from your friends. If you print out AR cards you can see your pokémon come alive. Take my word for it. It's really really cool. :D

"It's not clear how these Markers will be distributed but you will be able to get posters in the August issue of Official Nintendo Magazine which goes on sale on 7 July."

Does that mean the magazine will be distributing the cards to display your pokemon on? And ugh I'm in Portugal on that day, I'll be diving right into the airport WH Smith's back home to get that issue if it does have the cards!

  37. DomkeyKong Sunday 10th Jul 2011 at 10:57

I will when I get my 3DS for Christmas, because I've always wanted to see Pokémon on my table doing battle, if they do put that in, because they could make you connect at the same time as using the AR cards for it.
