Metroid Wii U: Nintendo 'sure' it will happen

Katsuya Eguchi reveals his ideas

Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi has said that he's sure that there will be a Metroid game released for Wii U.

What's more, he revealed how a new Samus Aran adventure could work on Nintendo's new console.

"I can't give you any details now, but I'm sure there will be a new Metroid release making use of the new controller, not just to control Samus and her ship but also to give the player a new source of information," Eguchi told Kotaku.

The Animal Crossing mastermind added: "Maybe the player is looking at the screen but has the information that they need to defeat the enemy in their hands. You could look through the screen and scan your enemy and find where it's weakspot is."

It sounds like Metroid is a perfect fit for Wii U but what sort of game should it be? A Super Metroid-style game or another Prime or something completely different like Metroid Other M?

I think 99% of people would agree in saying that we want a Prime 4 style game. I think this will be one of next years big E3 announcements, where they will show off a big trailer and gameplay for the first time, ready for a late 2012/early 2013 release.

more metroid prime. everyone knows that prime is a fundamentally better series than the original sidescrollers...

I want Nintendo to go back to 2D Metroid since it was when Prime came along that I started to stop playing Metroid, I under st\nd that they look good and have the scanner but Super Metroid is the best Metroid game for me, heck its the best game ever imo,so a 2D metroid game(Maybe with the option to play Super Metroid like you could play Metroid in Zero Mission would be great) would be the best option from my poiny of view.

I am interested to see what they come up with, hopefully something good, i really enjoyed the prime games but i also enjoy the side scrollers and other m as it was fun! Happy to hear there is a new game coming out at some point!

In my opineon I thought metroid zero mission was my best metriod.

it's got to be a Prime styled games surely! It just seems to fit so well with the scanning Idea and everything. Make it happen nintendo! ;D as much as I liked Other M, it wasnt the same...

  7. SteveSalmon999 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 12:06

Agreed, scanning only really fits with the fps style of the prime games!
I love metroid fusion and other M also, but i think that a 2d metroid game wouldn't make good use of the controller...
But whatever happens, if we get Other M 2, i want to be able to use an analogue stick
and also a fix to the screw attack hindering overblasts... ...

I personally want a Prime style game that follows the more cannon Metroid storyline, rather than disturbing the Prime Trilogy which in my opinion is perfect how it is, they need to bring back Kraid!

  9. Ai64 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 12:56

I hope for corruption's sequal. All three prime games were briliant, but I'm hungry for more. :D

I'd be incredibly shocked if it didn't happen. Metroid games have always been enjoyable and have been improved by the first-person element used since Gamecube (although used sparingly in Other M). Samus, as one of Nintendo's top 5 mascots, is sure to appear sooner over later.

this sounds so cool. id love to scan with the contoller. you could look through samus' visor on the controller. how awesome is that?

  12. K2000 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 14:04

I think a 2D metroid but with the sceen you could use the map, upgrade sceen(Like in Super Metroid where you couls take beams or suits on or off) as well as a scanning mode that lets you look at the world a bit like in Metroid:Other M where you tilt the controller to look about and scan things but on sceen it's still 2D.

  13. MrChewtoy Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 14:24

Other M style, but where instead of switching to visor mode, your visor is permanantly on the Ultimote (calling it that from now on), meaning you don't need to keep flipping between the two. This way you'd also be able to see yourself moving in first and third person at the same time, which I'm sure the console can manage with its extra horsepower. There should probably also be an option to decide whether you want the visor view on the TV or the controller, so the action on the big screen can cater to either fans of the original or Prime's FPS style.

And if you're playing just on the mote, then obviously you'll go back to Other M's method of changing between the two modes of play.

MP4. I dont care if its FPS or 2D, but I mean at the end of Corruption if you 100% it, you see Dark Samus' ship, so there has to ba a sequel.

  15. barrybarryk Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 14:35

A prime with more fluid scanning, that was the biggest pain in that series. Nothing's stopping them from making a new 2D metroid game (Sequel to Metroid / Super Metroid) as well and releasing it as a downloadable game since it would cost a minuscule amount of cash to develop in comparison.

  16. jason 1995 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 16:19

    Give us Metroid Prime 4 Please :!: :!: :!:

  17. Darkmaster118 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 16:48

I would like a better version of other M
other M was good but it had too many flaws, such as having to use the d pad to move

  18. KaRnage Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 16:53

Please God let it be like Other M, and save the next sidescroller for handheld. I know I enjoyed prime but I just didn't like the style it never really felt like a Metroid game.

  19. saswatch Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 17:15

how about a mix of prime and other m so u play in what view u like. like fallout 3

  20. Fishman92 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 17:46

I want prime style game, they were THE BEST Metroid games. And the controller to be used as a scan visor.

  21. burgermunch Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 17:51

    Lol Metroid other U

  22. MistaChristopher Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 18:01

Totally digging Mr Chewtoy's ideas above ^^
Would love Another M, M:OM laid the groundwork for a newly stlyed fantastic 3D adventure. Just gotta work on it's faults and it would be AWESOME!
And plus the story could be toned down a bit. =D

  23. Everegreen Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 18:46

I thought something quite similar. I thought you would control Samus like in Metroid: Other M, but when you hold up the Wii U's controller, through the Wii U screen, you can see the game as if it were a Metroid Prime Game, like the 3D switch in Metroid: Other M, except the television screen is normal. This could also be used for scanning and just general viewpoint, and I think it would make quite a good fit if the game is like this - but fix the health system from Other M  .

  24. Icytroid1993 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 19:27

Metroid is my all time favorite game series, with prime 1 being my number 1 game of all time! (other m was awesome too) I think the best style of play that would suit the new console would be primes! I feel a good idea would be to use the Wii U touch screen to be an inventory screen where you could display the map (touch and slide to turn it around or pan) and view all necessary things that you need, including the selection of weapons that you collect in the game :) Being able to touch the screen to switch weapons provides ease of use! The controller has 2 analogue sliders to move and move the camera, combined with the trigger buttons at the back of the controller to fire, make the perfect control set-up for the game :D Other M's style of play however would also work. (I'm a big fan of other m) The controller again could be used to display all of the important stuff, then if you point the controller at the screen then you can switch to the first-person view! Then aim with the touch screen and fire! Please make Metroid a launch title Nintendo!!!

  25. Icytroid1993 Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 19:37

The ending of corruption left a hole in the Metroid story. They need to make the next Metroid a sequel to corruption, i believe that the ship that follows Samus in the end is Sylux's ship :? It looks an awful lot like it! Also KRAID must be in the next game! I can't think of anything more creepy and epic than to battle him in the next game  Listen to what the fans want Nintendo!!! I can't wait to see what they'll do next :D (BTW, we still haven't seen Kraid in 3D :x )

  26. Mmmyeah Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 at 21:35

    control Samus and her ship

sounds interesting. dogfights between samus and the space pirates in between the exploring would be awesome. maybe i am looking into it too much.

still, while it is an inevitability, i am very happy to hear some metroid wii u talk and i look forward to seeing what happens.

  27. Violet Thursday 16th Jun 2011 at 04:00

more metroid prime. everyone knows that prime is a fundamentally better series than the original sidescrollers...

Such a terribly wrong opinion in every single way.

  28. Redfish20 Thursday 16th Jun 2011 at 14:27

The idea sounds the same as Other M. Control Samus on TV, scan enemies with the Umote, it's the perfect setup for the perspective swapping thing. Perhaps the controls could be a little slicker than Other M though please Ninty? If it handles in a similar way to Fusion that would be most welcome. Also better music than Other M.

Oh and anyone who asked for Kraid to be in it is 100% correct btw (can a request be correct? It can now).

  29. Redfish20 Thursday 16th Jun 2011 at 14:32

Imagine how mental overblast moves would look in first person. Still Lylat Wars had a first person view option despite the fact you spend about 100% of the game barrel rolling so I suppose it could happen.

  30. olimuckm Thursday 16th Jun 2011 at 16:24

I think they should have one more go at the metoid other m style of gameplay- BUT with the ability to move in first person mode.

  31. Argetlam Thursday 16th Jun 2011 at 17:34

    Prime 4.

The scans just added so much to the game, and the scenery...my god the scenery.

  32. layton lover Friday 17th Jun 2011 at 14:52

I have never been a fan of Metroid, never appealed to me, so a big classic Wii U title could reel me in.

  33. Eragon Firesword Friday 17th Jun 2011 at 17:40

Primelike would be best, with emphasis on expanding the Metroid world, the culture of the people, how the government works, the hierarchy of the military. Other M was very empty in comparison, an example of a well-established games studio resting on their laurels, with a storyline ripped right out of Fusion.

  34. C00LI098 Monday 20th Jun 2011 at 12:22

I really, really want an Other M-type game. I loved that game so much; it easily takes a spot in my top five Wii games. To be honest, I dislike the fully-FPS Metroid games. I never liked them at all.
