Top 10 best Game Boy Advance games

Which GBA games do you want to play on the Wii U Virtual Console?

We celebrated the 10th anniversary of GBA back in 2011 with our list of the best Game Boy Advance games. Now that Game Boy Advance games have been confirmed for the Wii U Virtual Console, let's return to it to see which GBA games we'd like to play again on the GamePad.

Before we start, some housekeeping. We have only included one game from the Super Mario Advance and Pokemon series as otherwise this list could have been dominated by Mario and Pokemon! On with the top ten!

10. Mario Kart: Super Circuit

While everyone loved Mario Kart 64, some longed for a return to the simplicity of Super Mario Kart. They got it here in the first ever handheld Mario Kart game.

  2. super yoshifan Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:43

Intersting how Golden Sun: The Lost Age and Mario kart: Super Circuit look the same ;)

  3. bobbyy29 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:48

That's my favourite Mario Kart track ever. I love the way you have to dodge the purple dragon fire and... Oh...

  4. samus_killer Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:50

Great list Tom (although the picture of Mario Kart is glitched as Golden Sun. EDIT: Oh wow, nevermind). Definitely agree with Advance Wars as number 1, such a great tactical game, many memories. I personally would of placed Minish Cap much higher and also prefer Pokemon Leaf Green/Fire Red over the third generation, but each to their own.

  5. George3970 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:50

I KIND of agree. SMB3 on there would be good on there,as well as Wario Land 4! But good choices

  6. shy guy 64 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:51

good choices, alltough i'd be torn between witch zelda to put at the top

i've never played advanced wars but i've thought about getting it

  7. JamieRIOT Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:51

I love the GBA. Nintendo seriously needs to put GBA games on the eShop, it would be a win-win situation, with tons of happy nostalgic fans and Nintendo would pocket a fortune in the process!

  8. saswatch Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:54

erm u missed sonic advance series and pokemon fire red and leaf green and etc

  9. saswatch Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 16:59

I love the GBA. Nintendo seriously needs to put GBA games on the eShop, it would be a win-win situation, with tons of happy nostalgic fans and Nintendo would pocket a fortune in the process!

they should do since it is 10 years old come on nintendo make it happen :D

  10. SammyDodger Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 17:15

Yes great list :) I absolutely LOVE Advance Wars & Pokemon :D I hope they bring a 3DS version of both series soon!!

  11. TaleOfTheToaster Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 17:19

Mario Power Tennis GBA is one of my favourite games altogether, could definately have been in this list.

  12. mog96 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 17:27

I couldnt agree with this more :D
I know nintendo probably wont release GBA games for the 3DS :( , but at least make 3D classics for ALL of these games, (especially golden sun and pokemon!)

  13. Argenthor Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:01

    I still have an sp.
But more importantly i have an original DS... why does noone acknowledge its existence?!?

  14. SuperSonicYoshi Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:15

Yay my fav games made it Minish cap and Link to the past also i <3 the screen shot for mario kart
best game ever  Link to the past

  15. bowatera Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:19

    Great List :)

I'm surprised Final Fantasy Tactics Advance did not get a mention, but overall, the games in the top ten are fully justifiable.

  16. kiriath Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:23

woah bowser got a different look in mario kart gameboy! whys he purple? >:3 lol

  17. masamune Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:27

Glad to see Superstar Saga, but very sad Zero Mission and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow didn't get a look in.

  18. Shaliss Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:28

    No Yoshi's Island? :'(

  19. cheatmaster30 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 18:34

No Wario Land 4? For shame ONM, that game was awesome!

I generally agree with your list though, all the games on it are also excellent.

  20. allanironmaiden Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 19:13

yeah, mariokart screenshot is messed up lol

a link to the past has to win in my opinion.....its a timeless classic no matter which console its on lol

eagerly awaiting minish cap on 3DS......one of the few zelda games iv nevere had the chance to play

  21. The_BAAD_Man Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 19:17

Great choices! I'm currently in the middle of the original Golden Sun :)

  22. Redfish20 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 19:30

Personally I would put Metroid Fusion at the top of my list, it's my third favorite game ever (after Ocarina and Galaxy2) but I shouldn't really be allowed to make that sort of decision having never played advanced wars :D

  23. Super Andre Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 19:58

I've always thought retro style games are better in areas than modern games Who agrees.

  24. Mmmyeah Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 19:58

WOW! I love the screenshot for Mariokart!

oh yeah, it's the wrong one

Intersting how Golden Sun: The Lost Age and Mario kart: Super Circuit look the same ;)

    ok, we get it.

That's my favourite Mario Kart track ever. I love the way you have to dodge the purple dragon fire and... Oh...

wow, alot of people are noticing this without reading the comments

Great list Tom (although the picture of Mario Kart is glitched as Golden Sun.

    Oh come on!

woah bowser got a different look in mario kart gameboy! whys he purple? >:3 lol

    this is incredible

yeah, mariokart screenshot is messed up lol

    ARGH!

anyway, it is great to see some GBA love, it was my first console that wasn't half my brothers. i loved superstar saga, though i found partners in time to be very poor in comparison. and i think that minish cap is often a forgotten game in zelda terms. everyone raves about ocarina of time, a link to the past and majora's mask but i think minish cap was a great return to the traditional style after all that 3d.

ps. there was another error, after metroid fusion you wrote "see also: metroid fusion. i guess you meant metroid zero mission. i know, i am being pedantic.

  25. Super Andre Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 20:05

What are you on about Mmmyeah Minish Cap was my second best Zelda.

  26. Lugia Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 20:24

What about Sonic Advance 1-3? I really loved that series, and think it peaked at 2 :)

  27. Ai64 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 20:48

Great list. I also wondered metroid: zero mission was included. It was my favourite GBA game.

  28. Johny G Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 20:50

I would argue that Mario Kart, Mario Tennis & Mario Golf were all classic GBA games.

  29. Kirby8 Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 21:09

As always...Kirby gets ZERO LOVE! Come on ONM! The GBA Kirby games were amazing! Especially the AMAZING Mirror! XD
I really liked the Sonic games and the Spyro games too on the GBA. I like your choices, but Kirby should definitely be up there. I liked Emerald, but my fave was FR! Cause it was a great remake.

  30. sciqueen Wednesday 22nd Jun 2011 at 21:31

Why are Super Mario World and Link to the Past rated so highly? They were originally for the SNES and look much better on a TV screen! Swap them for Warioware because it was unique and took many people by surprise and Minish Cap because it is one of the best Zeldas that unfortunately gets forgotten about.

  31. pokemanD Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 01:59

    Why no SMB3? :(

  32. Oxo64 Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 07:11

I don't really agree with Avance Wars being number 1. Every other game on that list is better in my opinion. I would have put Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones in the list, my favorite game of the series by far.

  33. Skulmuk Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 10:36

Advance Wars fully deserves the top spot. Fair enough, Japan had it on the NES years before as Famicom Wars, but it never saw the light of day on these shores (as far as I'm aware), so I wouldn't count it as a old game brought into modern times. SMB3 is one of the greatest games of all time, as is ALttP, however the only real reason for their release was nostalgia. Advance Wars brought new meaning to TBS gaming, and for such an early release, it packed one hell of a punch. I've never spent so much time (and gone through so many batteries) on a single mission like I did when I first played it. Heck, even now, it can still provide a great challenge - dig it out if you still have it, and start a new campaign, and then watch as Olaf somehow gives you trouble. You'll see what I mean.

  34. thenintendoer Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 10:44

i would have to place mario advance 2 at no.1 mainly because it was my first ever video game i owned and it holds the most memories, great list though

  35. DrSalvador Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 11:56

    where is warioloand 4?

  36. jaco_p Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 12:33

Advance wars - defo number 1. one of the best games ever! so i can understand why no fire emblem of FFTA because same genre but if you're gonna have remakes in there, gotta be yoshi's island, sorry.
Still loving my GBA SP years on and still got my original DS Brick editionTM :D :D :D :D :D

  37. andymck07 Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 13:28

Where's Sonic Advance? That was his best game since the Megadrive days.

  38. moggs Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 14:39

Since I'm such a big Zelda fan I'm ashamed to say I never played Minish Cap. Hopefully I'll get the chance to rectify that if it comes to eshop. Loved the mario kart game, but Link to the past was my favourite game. Well, along with Mario advance.

  39. Laughlyn Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 15:03

I'v ejust starte dplaying some GBA games i've missed out on recently, I love Super Circuit and i'm just in first dungeon on Minish cap and cant believe i missed it first time round.
I'm currently bidding on the metroid games (zero and fusion) and have my gamecube ready for when fusion gets here with my metroid prime.
Obv love Pokemon as well :D theres some really great games on GBA and even tho i initially bought the GBA SP for my son i've found myself on it more than my 3DS once he's gone to bed lol

  40. Baker1000 Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 17:11

I own about 7 of those games. All are great, but I think Golden Sun needs to be higher! Some might argue that the first is better too, but I played both for hours on end. I would like to back Mario Tennis and Golf as being in the top 10. More so Golf because Tennis was a bit too short. A couple of the Sonic Advance games do deserve a mention as well. The biggest crime here is not including Sword of Mana! That was a truly epic game. The GBA was the first Nintendo console that I really started to get into, probably because I was old enough to buy my own games instead of sticking to just Pokemon! To think it has been 10 years since the release blows my mind.

  41. tomutwit Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 18:20

You only put M and L at 6? Ugh, you guys. It should go:
    1.M&l
    2.tloz mc
    3.SMW
    4. maybe m vs dk, but i dont actually have it

  42. sciqueen Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 21:56

Kirby's Amazing Mirror! Put that in there!

  43. evilguy12 Thursday 23rd Jun 2011 at 22:02

There's no Mother 3, list is irrelevant.

  44. cmk8 Sunday 26th Jun 2011 at 07:49

I'd say Wario Ware Twisted should be put in instead of the original, more innovative and a sign of things to come with the Wiimote etc.

  45. layton lover Sunday 26th Jun 2011 at 09:23

I'm in the mood to play some now... :)

But it's a good list, I love Pokemon Leaf green and Pokemon Ruby, the Super Mario world remake is traditional and great, and The Minish cap is good too! I also greatly enjoyed Wario land 4, it beat the Shake dimension hands down!

My favourite on the handheld though, has to be Superstar saga, the setting, characters, and story blew me away! My other favourite is an unsung hero by the name of Megaman Battle network, a ridiculously good game!

I have to admit though, I think super circuit is over-rated...

  46. deline Sunday 3rd Jul 2011 at 16:11

awww... I thought doom gba series were the best :(

  47. masamune Sunday 3rd Jul 2011 at 23:25

My other favourite is an unsung hero by the name of Megaman Battle network, a ridiculously good game!

i'd hardly call Battle Network unsung purely because it's a MegaMan game, although the series has gotten fairly good reviews, especially 3.

except 4, the best in the series. why do you people hate 4. it's depressing.

  48. james1330 Tuesday 2nd Aug 2011 at 11:19

I think you've missed out two amazing games in Mario Golf: Advance Tour, and Mario Power Tennis. Ok sure, I can kinda understand them not quite making the top ten, but come on ONM, we need more like a top 25 :P

  49. dreamer87 Tuesday 2nd Aug 2011 at 13:23

I'd like to see double dragon advance on the list. I played the NES games and gameboy ones and I quite like the double dragon series even though it's a bit dated.

I've never played double dragon advance before but I'd very much like to.

  50. Dougtendo Tuesday 18th Dec 2012 at 17:54

What about Wario Land 4? Best 2D game there is if you ask me...

  51. deKay Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 11:37

Pinobee: Quest of Heart for me, please.

  52. Slinkington Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 11:45

I don't really want to play any GBA games on my Wii U. I'd rather play them on the 3DS. I'd like to see:

    Metroid: Zero Mission
    Mario Advance 1, 2 & 4
Zelda: A Link to the Past
    Kirby: Nightmare in dreamland

So pretty much all the sequels to games they chose to give us as Ambassadors. I swear they chose the worst games in the series on purpose.

  53. Bexie Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 11:45

Golden Sun should be number 1 :P

And I agree with some others - why on earth are they releasing GBA games on a home console instead of a handheld? >.>

  54. deKay Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 11:50

    Who said it was "instead"?

  55. eroslanith Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 11:51

If you're including SNES remakes (which you seem to be as you have Super Mario World and A Link to the Past) then how did Final Fantasy VI not make that list!? Also how did Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones not make the list either!? Easily two of the best GBA games out there.

  56. King Slazo Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 11:55

    Who said it was "instead"?

The 3DS GBA VC library is currently at, as we pass 18 months since the Ambassador titles were given out, zero titles.

Ergo it looks likely the Wii-U will receive GBA games before the 3DS, which would make no sense whatsoever.

  57. fisher2007 Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 12:20

no sonic advance games and wario land 4 :(

  58. deKay Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 12:41

Ergo it looks likely the Wii-U will receive GBA games before the 3DS, which would make no sense whatsoever.

Perhaps, but we don't know that. And even if they are on the Wii U first, that still doesn't mean instead!

  59. toffeeman30 Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 13:06

dont think the snes games should count as gba games

  60. MartinIsAwesome Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 13:07

no sonic advance games and wario land 4 :(

Indeed I would definitely include Sonic Advance at the very least. The other two were good too, but the first is my personal favourite.
Also Sonic Battle. The story is a bit silly but I love the main feature of being able to collect cards of each and every character's moveset and crreate your own custom set for Emerl (which is a stupid name, as well. Still don't know how to pronounce it.) But yeah, it was a decent Sonic spin-off.

dont think the snes games should count as gba games

But they added in extra features, so why not. If you consider that the Wii's Virtual console had about five different versions of Street Fighter II, why can't you have the original Zelda: A Link to the Past and the GBA remake with extra sound-effects.

  61. ifsey Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 13:16

Fire Emblem for the GBA outshines all but Advance Wars, which it ties with.

  62. Knightendo Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 13:28

Golden Sun is a must surely! And I loved Ecks V Sever back in the day, not sure how it'd stack up to being played today though, I might just have my rose-tinted glasses on.

But definitely the game I'd like to see the most is the one I got with my GBA, and that was Wario Land 4! :D I'm positive it'd still be as much fun now!

However, one of my very fave portable games was the original Gameboy's Jurassic Park, would be great to rerelease it on the Wii U's VC, especially with the movie coming back out again into cinemas, though somehow I doubt old GB games will.

  63. Stormage Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 13:52

No fire emblem blazing sword or sacred stones ?!?!?!?

  64. KH81314 Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 13:58

I didn't like Advance Wars that much. I think Kingdom Hearts should be on here. It was my first Game boy Advance game and I loved it.

  65. TheSlenderman Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 16:32

I agree with this list, but...
Why are Nintendo not releasing any GBA titles on the 3ds yet? Just WHY?? :?:

  66. MartinIsAwesome Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 16:39

However, one of my very fave portable games was the original Gameboy's Jurassic Park, would be great to rerelease it on the Wii U's VC, especially with the movie coming back out again into cinemas, though somehow I doubt old GB games will.

It's not a matter of old Game Boy games not being re-released (there have been on 3DS after all). The problem is with licensing agreements becoming invalid. It's a shame too because the Game Gear/Master System Jurassic Park was absolutely brilliant.

  67. Zelda101 Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 16:50

hell yeah. i had Emerald but it broke so it will be nice to play it again :D :D :D

  68. Herbert_Rarr Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 16:58

Where is Sonic Advance 1?! It was a near perfect (yet short) return to the classic Sonic gameplay - the exact right speed and physics, with a bunch characters to add some variation and the special stages were great fun too, with a difficulty that felt just right. The Chao Garden was a quirky little addition - slightly addictive and really cute.
This game should be the standard for modern Sonic handhelds, however was ruined by the over-dependence on speed in SA2, 3 (although 3 had some good large level designs and skill-based platforming areas), Rush 1 and 2 and Colors DS.
Sonic games should slow down again to the speed of Sonic Advance 1 and rely more on skill-based platforming and puzzles.
In my opinion, this is in the top three best ever Sonic games, surpassed only by the original Sonic the Hedgehog and perhaps Sonic 2.

  69. thenintendoer Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 17:13

some good choices i just hope they not mainly the same as the ones included in the ammasador program

  70. vtheyoshi Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 17:52

Mario vs DK was a pretty fun game.

  71. Argenthor Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 18:38

Advance Wars!! This and the second were pure gold.

  72. billywest Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 19:07

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories should have been on this list?

  73. Donkey Kong Jr. Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 20:28

Bit of a dick move for Nintendo to put GBA games on the Wii U but not the 3ds? gtf nintendo

  74. NessPSI Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 21:12

    Mother 3? Where is it?
Probably because of the non-European release.

    I'm waiting...

(Mother 3 in VC could be what Itoi was taliking about when he said "I'm gonna make the Mother series more playable.")

  75. superthingymabob Thursday 24th Jan 2013 at 23:18

I would've put one of the Fire Emblem games on the list.

  76. The_BAAD_Man Friday 25th Jan 2013 at 07:48

Excellent list! I own most of these games, but I've actually never played any of the Advance Wars series!
The GBA is probably my favourite of the Nintendo handheld consoles!

  77. deKay Friday 25th Jan 2013 at 08:22

Bit of a dick move for Nintendo to put GBA games on the Wii U but not the 3ds? gtf nintendo

Once again, who says they're not coming to the 3DS?

  78. dap005 Friday 25th Jan 2013 at 09:29

Along with what's on the list I'd like to see: FE7 and warioware twisted on WiiU or 3ds virtual console as well.

  79. Pyron12 Friday 25th Jan 2013 at 16:22

I would knock off LttP and SMA2 for being remakes and put Sonic Advance 1 on it.

  80. Sex Bob-omb Sunday 27th Jan 2013 at 00:24

It has to be between minish cap and advance wars

  81. BeedleZ Sunday 27th Jan 2013 at 18:57

So glad Advance Wars got top place ^_^
Hope there is an Advance Wars 3DS soon!

  82. BOWIEtheHERO Monday 28th Jan 2013 at 01:14

The fact Golden Sun: TLA is no.9 on this list makes me very sad.
I only see two games worthy of being close to it, and that's Advanced Wars, a valiant no.1 here, and Minish Cap.
Golden Sun getting beaten by Wario Ware makes me a little sick.

The beauty of it being a random list is however- It's completely subjective. And the only opinion I really give a hoot about is my own. And Golden Sun: TLA is no.1 for me. Easily the best GBA game, by far. Nothing beats it's cryptic puzzles, epic RPG battle system, sprawling map, great story arc, lovable characters and beautiful aesthetic.

  83. legspazm Friday 8th Feb 2013 at 10:35

    MOTHER 3. Best GBA game.

  84. smash-brother Sunday 10th Feb 2013 at 17:35

is it me or does this article little lazy with only a line or to on each game

  85. pokedudes Thursday 14th Feb 2013 at 21:26

    PPPPPOOOOOOKKKKKKEEEEEEEMMMMMMMOOOOOONNNNNN :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D                        :o :o :o :o :o :o

  86. Nintendo77 Wednesday 20th Feb 2013 at 09:08

    I remember Super Circuit

  87. stormsinger Wednesday 6th Mar 2013 at 20:10

I would've probably placed Minish Cap 3rd or 4th, but overall I really agree with this list.
I wish they had released WarioWare: Twisted, I bet it would've been awesome. I truly hope that some of these games make it onto the Wii U eShop, especially the Mario Kart and Zelda. (Actually, I'd prefer a remake of Minish Cap. Imagine seeing Vaati leering at you in full HD...) :D

  88. Yasimoto Thursday 7th Mar 2013 at 17:30

I would have included a Fire Emblem game, FFTA and/or FF VI out of I/II/IV/V/VI.

But most GBA games have been superseded by better DS versions, eg. the ones listed above as well as Zelda, Mario Kart, Golden Sun, Pokemon, Mario & Luigi etc.

  89. jemm33 Friday 15th Mar 2013 at 09:10

WHY!!! No one has mentioned Harvest moon, the GBA version was awesome,(the 3DS tale of two towns isn't).I spent over 100 hours growing crops and cultivating relationships, can't wait to play that on the gamepad.
Also FF tactics and the first Fire Emblem, (got sacred stones on 3ds) these need to be on there.

  90. gmundy Sunday 31st Mar 2013 at 18:26

You missed off Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones! That's a brilliant game!

  91. Zynt_Mcflint Thursday 18th Apr 2013 at 08:58

A good list, but I personally would of put Metroid Zero Mission in there instead of Fusion. Don't get me wrong, I love Fusion and it deserves the praise, but I thought Zero Mission was better. Mario Advance 4 (Mario Bros 3) would of been my Mario Advance of choice also.

I'm disappointed that there's no Wario Land 4 on the list though. That game is one of the best platformers on the system, not to mention that it was brand new, built from the ground up for the GBA, whereas the Mario Advance games were basically ports of SNES games.

All in all though, a solid list of games :) .

I would like to try that DK climbing game out. :D

But Zero Mission is just a remake of the original Metroid, Fusion deserves the spot on this list.

My top 10 (criteria of one game per franchise, so no multiple games):

    01: Final Fantasy IV Advance
02: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
    03: Pokémon Emerald
04: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
    05: Fire Emblem
    06: Golden Sun
    07: Advance Wars
    08: Wario Land 4
    09: Metroid Fusion
    10: Mario Kart: Super Circuit

FF4 Advance is GBA perfection in my eyes. FF5 Advance and FF6 Advance are also very good games, but FF4 Advance holds its own quite comfortably even against its DS counterpart in my books. The only reason why ONM's top pick ranks so low on my list is because this is my opinion, and there are six other games that are better than it.

Why Mario 3 over World? Duke that out among yourselves.

Ah yes, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald has always been part of my gaming childhood...

  96. Wyraachur Monday 29th Apr 2013 at 19:48

A lot of good games made it into this top ten, I will say that.

One of the ones I thought would have been a good contender was Warioware Twisted. Had a good gimmick going for it with the gyro sensor and was a lot of fun to play. Of course, it was quite sad that the game never got a European release (I had to get my copy on American import), and the Sonic Advance series was good too.

Plus some of the early Yu-Gi-Oh (The original Worldwide Edition games) titles released for the GBA were good for killing a few hours if you had nothing to do. The Sacred Cards too if you had the patience for it (Was never a fan of the elemental rock-paper scissors element of that game, as I would usually be subjected to my best monster being killed by a much weaker monster of a stronger type the turn after I summoned it)

I don't have a Wii U, so obviously couldn't get this on Virtual Console, but you've completely persuaded me to dig out my old GBA SP and buy all these games. Every single one.

  98. Waldy565 Saturday 18th May 2013 at 20:49

I would have to add one game to this, and even in this 3DS/Wii U age, I only played it recentley - and that's Fire Emblem. SUCH an awesome game

  99. Olympion Tuesday 21st May 2013 at 15:21

Never really got into Advance Wars, I bought it at the same time as Smash Bros. Melee and Melee was just so much more fun and addictive. I wasn't that impressed with the DS sequel either.

Also, Minish Cap isn't any shorter than A Link to the Past. LttP has more dungeons, sure, but they are very short by modern standards. I downloaded LttP for the Virtual Console and beat it (nearly hundred percented it in fact) in about 10 hours. Just because it took you a long time to beat as kids doesn't mean the game is actually that huge.

add super mario world 2 yoshis island. one of the best platformers for any system

  101. BT383 Sunday 26th May 2013 at 16:35

Played Super Circuit as an ambassador game, the steering's a bit too twitchy for me, but other than that, fantastic.

  102. Wiison Tuesday 28th May 2013 at 11:42

It's a shame that Metroid Zero Mission isn't on the list, this game and Fusion are the best GBA games! I actually really enjoyed Crash Fusion and Spyro Fusion, two great games :) I know they probably don't deserve top 10 status but I thought they at least deserve a mention :)

  103. wilfrefanguy Sunday 9th Jun 2013 at 11:55

they should put pokemon red and blue on the 3ds eshop

  104. GamerOutlaw Tuesday 25th Jun 2013 at 11:20

So many of my favorite games on that list. Zelda Minish cap, pokemon emerald, mariokart, etc. Here's some that missed out on your top 10, but I personally loved.

    Fire emblem the sacred stones.
    Metal Slug advance.
    Sonic Advance 3.
    Donkey Kong Country.
    Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.

  105. IRNBRU64 Saturday 29th Jun 2013 at 14:20

Fire emblem on GBA is great! Anyone agree?

  106. liveswired Thursday 18th Jul 2013 at 22:13

amazing little console. Gunstar Heroesismy personal fav with Metroid.

  107. gamebox2d Wednesday 24th Jul 2013 at 13:16

...you forgot to mention that Mario Kart Super Circuit wasn't a patch on the original. The inclusion of the original's levels didn't help because they lacked key elements from SNES Super Mario Kart. Nice try though, Nintendo: 80%

  108. pokefan247 Saturday 10th Aug 2013 at 13:00

damn i wish i played advanced wars... :(

  109. Mr Humphreys Wednesday 28th Aug 2013 at 08:16

Pokemon emerald got me into nintendo. I checked it a few days ago and I've been playing for 900 hours.

  110. liveswired Saturday 7th Sep 2013 at 17:46

Classic handheld - so many great games. Metroid Fusion and Gunstar Future Heroes are two of my favs!

  111. Brawlftw Sunday 27th Oct 2013 at 00:50

Nice list ONM, not sure I'd put Advance Wars at #1 but generally I agree.

  112. Kev_h80 Sunday 27th Oct 2013 at 14:20

All great games all of them I want to play again :)

  113. jdofthefunk Tuesday 17th Dec 2013 at 20:19

    No Fire Emblem?
The seventh game on GBA was the first we ever saw of the series! Plus, the Sacred Stones was just as good, and provided the only entry level difficulty before Awakening.

  114. flattopboy Friday 3rd Jan 2014 at 13:59

needs to be on the 3ds eshop

  115. Earthbounder Sunday 19th Jan 2014 at 17:38

I'm a little disappointed to see that two of the top three are (admittedly very awesome) remakes of Super Nintendo games rather than GBA originals, but this was still a very cool list! Also, no Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow?

Oh man, if they release Mother 3 on the Virtual Console, I'd be ecstatic.

  116. goldtanooki Monday 27th Jan 2014 at 20:48

Pokemon emerald got me into nintendo. I checked it a few days ago and I've been playing for 900 hours.

900?! And I thought 300 was big! (The time I've played on Platinum)

  117. Yepi69 Tuesday 4th Feb 2014 at 21:06

    Mother 3?
    Drill Dozer?

Those games were gold, but my top 1 fav is definitely Mother 3.

  118. OmegaBear Tuesday 4th Feb 2014 at 21:20

METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION! METROID FUSION!

    8)

  119. garywood Saturday 8th Feb 2014 at 11:40

    No FF6 advance?

  120. stealth20k Saturday 15th Feb 2014 at 23:53

I think tactics ogre lodis was the most serious rpg

  121. adamanaguchi Saturday 22nd Feb 2014 at 12:36

Just saying, Mother 3 (lucas from smash bros. brawl's game) Is a lot better than golden sun, as much as I love golden sun. Best story everr.

  122. Euan Russell Thursday 3rd Jul 2014 at 15:47

I would've said the Golden Sun games would take the #1 spot but great list nonetheless.

Pokemon emerald got me into nintendo. I checked it a few days ago and I've been playing for 900 hours.

Good going! I had 450 hours but my battery's f**king dead and it won't keep track of my frontier wins because of it, I always have to restart from 0.

However on a more positive note, I'm going to replace it this week when my battery gets delivered. I'm actually browsing this now because I'm a bit nostalgic about GBA at the moment, I think Nintendo got a lot worse after 2006 and i stopped following them. I'm mainly a PC gamer now but I still love the old nintendo consoles.

    No FF6 advance?

I don't think Link to the Past or Yoshi's Island should've been on this because it's unfair to say remakes are the best games on a system which was very innovative and original. Sure the remakes are great but original games are more deserving of a place on the list. They could have a list for remakes on GBA, if so I'd put Yoshi's Island, Doom, FF:Dawn of souls, Super Mario world and link to the Past for my top 5.
