Miyamoto: Online very important for Wii U

Mario creator outlines possibilities...

Shigeru Miyamoto has said that internet connectivity is going to be very important for the Wii U.

It is the goal of Nintendo's creative genius to create an online experience that's comfortable and welcoming for the Nintendo fans who do like to play online.

"We're not going to sit here and say that our goal is to become the number one online gaming company, because that's not our goal," Miyamoto told MTV.

He added that Nintendo understand that its consumers like to play online games and the fact that the Wii U has a browser "suggests that obviously internet and internet connectivity is going to be very important for the system."

He then outlined Nintendo's online opportunities. "There are opportunities to take advantage of online to expand a local, same-room multiplayer experience by connecting that to the internet and making new types of play that way.

"Also by having the smaller screen, being able to go online and perhaps see what game your friend is playing or see what TV they're watching, I think there's a lot of possibilities for how you could use that. Certainly internet functionality is something that will be important for the system."

Miyamoto also suggested more possibilities for the Miis. "We have introduced Miis to the world and everyone will hopefully have their own Mii, so obviously I think there's possibilities along those lines there."

He concluded: "And I will say that this is a system that will have a great deal of appeal for its online connectivity. A key word for Nintendo in the online sphere has been creating an experience that's comfortable for all players, so we'll still look at that and stick to our idea of trying to create an online experience that's welcoming to everyone."

Are you looking forward to seeing what Nintendo have to offer?

Satoru Iwata has previously suggested that Wii U online could enable voice chat and social networking.

Just don't screw up the online, whatever you do Ninty. They've not got a great reputation for online gaming, so I'm hoping the WiiU will change all that.

Good online-capabilities would welcome other gamers that only play PS3 or Xbox 360 to Nintendo's consoles. Not to mention that it'd please many of Nintendo's current fans. It's definitely vital for Wii U.

Nintendo online is simply the best. I can't wait for the next Mario Kart online, I hope it's more reliable too...

Nintendo just need to scrap their friend codes and let the world play together the way you can on PS3 or Xbox...

The ability to see what friends are playing (like onLive) would be very cool but then again that only works for onLive because the game is being run on the server and not on a local machine so isn't restricted by the gamers upload speed, all in all unlikely we'll actually see it and very unlikely it'll work.

I agree that online will be important. Maybe new features and updates too.

I'm glad this is a focus point for Nintendo - The lag in SSBB was disappointing, and I can rarely get a trade to work overseas on Pokémon Black, so good internet functionality would seriously increase their reputation.

Please, no friend codes. Leave the security to parental controls.

Lets hope they have an online co-op for games like New Super Mario Bros Wii U or some sort of Zelda four swords adventure.

This is funny when you consider that Nintendo had online capabilities since the Gamecube. Yeah, real fast on the uptake, ninty.

Why not have done a Sony way back when the DS was first brought out? Would of saved a lot of hassle keep swapping Friend Codes as new games and systems come out.

I think there should be lots more great games that you can play online with between 1 a nd 4 local players....

I like Nintendo for what it does. The amount of online compatible games on the PS3/XBOX360 that DON'T support local play is just ridiculous.

it is interesting that when ign covered his they highlighted the fact that he said "we don't aim to be the best online", making it sound more like nintendo doesn't really care about online.

meanwhile onm have focused on miyamoto stating that "online will be very important".

i agree with what onm have done though. i think miyamoto meant that while their number one goal is not to make a console that is the best for online gaming, they acknowledge it and are going to make it a prominant feature.

i think this is good because it means that local play and single player modes are not going to take a back seat like with a lot of ps360 games. i think the demos at e3 prove this too, with a lot of local play showcased.

Nintendo have never wanted to add trophies, it removes fun from the game and just breeds achievement hunters, which is not what Nintendo wanted. Nintendo brought a new, fun gaming experience and that should be something they stick to. However, regarding the online capabilities, I think something like Xbox Live would be quite cool. Parties and stuff would allow you to talk to your team mates/ friends whilst playing mario kart or whatever.. but then that too has negatives effects..
