Aonuma reveals Zelda Wii U ideas

He has plans for the controller

The Zelda Wii U demo was one of the highlights of this year's E3 show. It may have only been a prototype but that hasn't stopped Eiji Aonuma sharing his ideas for a Zelda Wii U game with Nintendo Power.

Aonuma thinks having a screen on the controller could really benefit the series which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

"I really think [having two screens is] one of the most exciting features of the system," Aonuma told the US magazine. "Unlike the Nintendo DS, there's distance between the television and you and your other screen. That really allows for some different interactions, some of which you saw [at E3]. For example, imagine having the contents of Link's satchel available to you on the screen of your controller, and using elements of the pouch to interact with gameplay on the television."

The Zelda producer added: "With The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, we had the Nunchuck and Wii Remote sort of stand in for the sword and shield that Link carries. But in a game for the Wii U, I can definitely see something like the controller itself becoming the different items that Link is using, allowing you to interact with the game world and with the game items in a very different way."

So do you have any ideas for Zelda Wii U? Share them with us below...

Well, this should definetly allow some 'Quick Potion Chucking'! :D
Zelda is gonna PWN to death on Wii U, and I can't wait!

I can't imagine the Wii U controller being used as a sword. Maybe the wii remote plus could be used in the game as well?

This going to be awesome if it's ever released. The new gadget introductions for the Wii U are a sight to behold and this game is sure to make good use of them. Let's cross our fingers eh?

Using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for the sword and shield, and then using the Wii U controller for items and other weapons does sound good. I'm imagining it would make a good Lens of Truth.

its going to be a good while before they start on it, but i look forward to what it will be like

How about using it as some sort of telescope or binoculars. I'd spend hours standing on the top of Death Mountain and viewing a sprawling Hyrule below if they included that.

Maybe the tablet could be used to aim the bow, hookshot and possibly the shield. That would be awesome!!

I'll only be interested in Zelda Wii U if no waggling is involved. I'm hate motion controls, i've never enjoyed them, I prefer a much more traditional control scheme, two control sticks, A B X Y buttons etc. Same reason I can't stand PH and ST, i've tried so hard to get into them, but the controls just stopped me. It's all about gameplay, if I can't enjoy playing the game, it's a bad game.

uumm something like that golf demo we saw for a new zelda item?

So long as they don't drop motionplus sword fighting, I'd love new ways to use the items

There could be some properly tricky, professor layton-style puzzles that take place only on the touch screen and you can turn off the tv and still carry on trying to solve these puzzles. there could be lots of puzzles you have to solve one after the other to open a door and some times when there is only one puzzle you have to do to open a chest or use an item for the first time or to learn a spell or impress a moblin. or maybe navi could be in the game and whenever she sees anything she could say "hey listen! this octorok reminds me of a puzzle...". or maybe that would just be annoying.

while i think it would be nice if nintendo use the wii remoterplus and nunchuk for link's sword and sheild again, i think they should probably concentrate on utilising the new controller. and using both could work, but it would be inconveniant to keep switching controller, especially thanks to the fact that nintendo will insist that you put on the wrist strap when you switch to the remote. it might feel like a step backwards after skyward sword's combat, but nintendo will find a way to make it work.

Maybe the tablet could be used to aim the bow, hookshot and possibly the shield. That would be awesome!!

thats a cool idea. the shield could work like the shield pose game from e3.

Swish swish, wii U tablet sword.

    That would suck

Hopefully more traditional controls like oot and use the screen for menus and possibly aiming bow.

Wouldn't mind the option of motion controls 8)

maybe the tablet could be used for the item and equipment screen also aiming the bow and arrow and otherthings like the hookshot and maybe a camera i also think they should keep the hd graphics

Swish swish, wii U tablet sword.

    That would suck

It would make a great smashing board though.

    I can not wait!

Control the sword with the right thumbstick/circle pad? Work like a lazy version of skyward sword

  19. Salamence19 Friday 26th Aug 2011 at 18:49

Maybe we could have a section where Link loses his sword and has to hit his enemies over the head with a wooden plank, which is controlled by the Wii U controller?

  20. JakeJayLee Friday 26th Aug 2011 at 19:41

Erm, the Four Swords as a special, super secret unlockable for when you have friends over on the tablet? Or online multiplayer would be nice. I love Zelda, I don't want it to change too much. Four Player Online Co-Op, Left 4 Dead style with hordes of the more basic monsters would be sweet!

I noticed that several of the Wii U articles mentioned 'the player with the Wii U controller' being able to do things with the touch screen, but there's been little (if any, as far as i'm aware) mention of how the system will be compatible with the Wii remote.
I figure from some of the images released that they can be used together, but juggling controllers (or flailing madly with a tablet) doesn't seem particularly innovative for games such as zelda. I have enough troubles using the DS stylus and face buttons simultaneously (OOT 3D, MP:H etc) without then having to drop both and pick up a completely different peripheral.

They could do sword play on the touch screen, fruit ninja style (wheater it would work is for another time) I think it would be great if you drew your finger back to draw the bow string, aim with gyro then realease. You could also role bombs along. I think it's a cool idea to use the utablet as a shield. Whatever they do they do I'm sure it'll be great, it is zelda  :D

I hope it's used for more than just an item screen, which has already been done (ocarina 3d) and is just boring.

  24. BigGoron64 Saturday 27th Aug 2011 at 18:43

I've only been playing Zelda games since Ocarina of Time 3d came out but I've been addicted to them ever since and I think this could be the best. The graphics look amazing and the controller could bring a new element to the game. I can't wait!!

  25. Redfish20 Sunday 28th Aug 2011 at 17:27

How about the bow replacing the sword as the main method of attack? It's not like Twilight wasn't starting to go down that route. It could be aimed with the Gyros as in Ocarina 3D or the extra analogue stick for those of an anti-innovative nature. (or those of an anti-innovative nature could stick to playing space invaders on their arcade machines. Or go hunting).

I'd really like something like a potion maker. For example, link has a cauldron and you collect items throughout hyrule, those items can be used to make potions for links health etc. You have to mix the potion with the stylus and drag things into the cauldron with your hands and stuff. It would be quite fun.

They could do sword play on the touch screen, fruit ninja style

Im loving that idea, because it really worked on Ninja Gaiden DS.

I also think that if you could attach the wii remote to the U-Tab then you could strap on the tab to your wrist and use as a Shield + Bow + Slingshot ect. and when you arnt aiming with the screeen it could be an inventory/map/checklist of quests.

But what i really want is some form of online multiplayer, wether it is you and a few friends do a speed run of a completed temple, or you and some friends doing mini gauntlet challenges or Boss speed runs. just something extra would be cool.
