Monster Hunter should be great in 3D

John Vekinis explains why he's looking forward to Monster Hunter 3DS

A fair few months ago I made a list of the games I want to come to 3DS and near the top of the list was Monster Hunter. So I was delighted with the announcement that the game is coming to the console.

There has only been one Monster Hunter game so far to be released on a Nintendo console and what a game it was. Monster Hunter Tri was on the receiving end of some great reviews. Quite right too as it was an exceptional multiplayer game that was great fun to play for months after release.

The game was praised for its incredible depth, beautiful scenery and awesome monsters so it's great to see that a sequel is on the way.

The game already looks like it's going to be pretty similar to the Wii game but should be jam packed with extra content.

A quick stumble around the Japanese language website for the game reveals some veteran monsters like the Lagiacrus, Rathalos and Gobul. My personal favourite monster I found on the site was some sort of yellow and blue fish/shark/dragon/chicken - I definitely would have remembered that one if it had been in Tri.

All the locations of Tri are brought onto the 3DS and there's also a village hub.

It should be great in 3D. All of those wide open vistas which show off the expansive depth of the Monster Hunter world should be even more impressive in 3D. Also, any stray fireball coming from an irate dragon will come straight at your face.

Another exciting aspect of Monster Hunter 3D is the chance to go hunting on the move. I would always dread having to leave my Wii half-way through a hunt - I used to leave it on while I was out so I would not lose my progress.

In retrospect I probably did far more harm than good to my electricity bill and the environment.

Capcom could even try and incorporate some StreetPass feature so that fans may collect hunter info on the go.

The touchscreen will also come in handy as there will be no more fiddly scrolling menus to negotiate in order to select my items; just a quick tap of the screen will suffice.

Most importantly, Capcom had better include online play which is on a par with the Wii. My favourite part of Tri was playing online and if they are going to emulate the fun of the first game, they have to deliver on the online front.

Local multiplayer should play a part too, and not just in arena play.

Now to mention what Ryozo Tsujimto, the supervisor of Monster Hunter, labels a "secret weapon." Monster Hunter 3G will be compatible with the new 3DS Circle Pad attachment even though it's not necessary to play the game.

My first thoughts on it: it looks pretty big and bulky, like taking the charging cradle for the 3DS around with you. Plus, the 3DS probably won't fit in my jeans pocket with that beast on.

Then I start thinking about what it has going for it. In reality, the only negative point is how it looks and peripherals aren't necessarily always works of art, I'd still say it looks better than the first incarnation of the DS.

Anyway, the extra Circle Pad would benefit Monster Hunter a fair bit. In the end, I'd rather have a bulky peripheral than an expensive redesign.

Are you looking forward to Monster Hunter Tri and what do you want to see in it?

And yet no-one has noticed that Capcom announced they aren't localising it... Yet.

I really hope we get this worldwide and I hope it is Wi-Fi enabled (preferably multi region too). If the PSP versions can have online, Wi-Fi on a 3DS version is an absolute must. Online is the biggest part of Monster Hunter.

I'm hoping they do something like persistent online :) The biggest annoyance with the Wii game was quitting out, going into another mode and waiting to get on the same server as my friends JUST so I could play a game with them. It'd be great if I'm just hanging out in single player, a notification pops up saying my friends invited me, accept it and BAM your ready to go hunting. :P

hopefully it'll be like the psp versions but with decent online access unlike the psp versions where you have online but it only works if you do it through a ps3.

i think that's going a bit far. the original ds certainly was not attractive, but this thing is really very ugly. but then, if we really cared about our things looking fancy instead of actually being any good, we would all buy apple products. I just hope that it get plenty of good games for it.

as for monster hunter, it looks fantastic. being on a handheld will make it much more accessable. hopefully capcom will streamline the online process too. the 3ds does have much better online functionality than the wii, so they should manage it.

Wow people cant help but make a great peice of news sound depressing. You guys really need to cheer up one of the best game series to date coming to 3ds and all you can complain about is if its coming over here or battery life. Most people will play there 3ds's at home so just plug it in and you wouldnt have to worry about the battery. And seeing how well monster hunter has sold from the psps games and Tri on Wii it'll be very likley to appear up sometime next year. If your wanting a game to play while you wait there is always monster hunter Tri to get you in the mood. Plus stop thinknig so negatively your making all of the onm forum really depressed and all this moaning wont help. Anyway with all the MH news 2012 will be one hell of a year.

some sort of yellow and blue fish/shark/dragon/chicken

    That must be Plesioth then.

Anyway, I would look forward to this, but a lack of 3DS means I'll be missing out DX.
