Nintendo Conference points to a bright future for 3DS

Our verdict on yesterday's events
Posted by Thomas East | 14-Sep-2011
We weren't expecting that. When I got up at 3.55am yesterday morning to cover the Nintendo 3DS press conference I didn't imagine that I would still be writing about it at 4.30 this afternoon. I was going to deliver my verdict at that point but then the first Phoenix Wright Vs Professor Layton screenshots arrived. The excitement doesn't stop for 3DS fans.

Not counting Layton Vs Wright, there were 36 Nintendo 3DS games on show at yesterday's conference. Yet Nintendo sprung a surprise at the start by talking about a Wii game. Not that we're complaining when Miyamoto arrived on stage to show off Skyward Sword.

Then we moved onto the conference itself and the new announcements. First up was Mario Tennis 3DS. Mario Tennis games have always been good but let's face it, Mario sports games don't exactly get the pulse racing like a plumber platformer or a 3D adventure. So really the most exciting and unexpected announcement was Monster Hunter 4.

You might have been expected Nintendo to show of Monster Hunter 3G but it was gobsmacking when they showed another beast battler at the end of the show. In fact, everyone was so amazed that they didn't really know what it was and it took a while for it to be confirmed that Monster Hunter 4 is indeed a 3DS game.

So while Monster Hunter 3G is nice for those who have already played Tri on Wii, Monster Hunter 4 will be what it's all about.

To be honest, it wasn't the announcements that were the most exciting thing about the conference. Although it might have been fanciful, what Nintendo fan wasn't hoping for a big new franchise game? An original Zelda 3DS perhaps, Metroid 3DS or maybe even a series we haven't seen for a while like F-Zero or Wave Race.

Still, those who like their Nintendo A-list stars won't have been complaining when new trailers for all the big 3DS games started being pumped out. Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Animal Crossing 3DS, Paper Mario 3DS, Luigi's Mansion 2 and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

For those who care about the success of 3DS, it was good to see Girls Mode (Style Boutique in the UK) announced for Japan for as much as we're looking forward to Mario Kart 7 and Luigi's Mansion 2, games like this help 3DS appeal to a wider audience.

Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land will make for a good Christmas but with games such as Metal Gear Solid 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario 3DS and Animal Crossing on the way, it all points to a bright future for 3DS.

What do you think?

True. I'm glad I have a 3DS now, a massive delivery of epic games are on the way!

I hate to be Mr Cynicism, because we did see a multitude of great games...

If you're Japanese.

Over here in the good old UK, we won't see a bunch of these titles until 2013, if at all. MH3G isn't coming out over here yet, which brings into question whether we'll get MH4, nobody gives a damn about Girls Mode, MGS3 HD has been made irrelevant by the HD remasterings coming soon to PS3, and... well, you get the idea.

I'm not saying things are bad (anymore) because they're not, but to forget all the transgressions and uncertainties from last week is naive to say the least.

You say Mario sports games don't get the excitement meter going, but Mario Power Tennis GBA, is my favourite game, so the prospect of a third handheld Mario Tennis game very much excites me.

nobody gives a damn about Girls Mode

That's quite a bold statement. :?
MGS3 HD has been made irrelevant by the HD remasterings coming soon to PS3

IMO I'd rather have a remake with added features rather than just a HD port.

Anyway, I would guess the slide pad attachment would be bundled with MH3G when it comes to Europe hopefully early next year! :D

Clearly a fanboy of the dark side... No offence but most of this is wrong. Most of these have been confirmed for 2012 and MHTri3G (wrong name again Mr Slazo) is just not planned for the UK... Yet. And no body knows about MH4 you pessimist. And I think that the female pre-teen market gives a damn about Girls Mode. And I still don't see what an HD remaster has over a 3D video game! I admit, HD is cool but it is dwarfed by the might of 3D. And HD doesn't matter here, we're on 3", not 50"!

I dont know, i was waiting for a mind-blowing announcement that would put Nintendo back on top again. The games that are on the horizan are looking fantastic but apart from the attachment and monster hunter, there wasnt much surprising information really.

The new announcements and new info about big games like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land most definitely make me think the 3DS has a bright future, I in fact even predict a massive sales surge will come in November and December with the dual events of the holiday season/Christmas and those games mentioned being released. Should sell about 5 million more 3DS consoles at least.

I didn't expect anything more than what the conference revealed, heck, I didn't expect many games to be revealed at all.

Looks pretty good loving all the new mario kart info :D but i still cant see developers embracing the slider unless nintendo re-release the 3DS with it attached :/ not that i want them to :/

Well all they said was that they haven't planned on releasing it here yet... I think people are usually quick to blame Nintendo for these things but the fact is - it's not Nintendo's decision what happens with other developer's games... It's the company that produced them for release on Nintendo platforms. Third party games tend to release in Japan first, meaning they deal with advertising and all the procedure and THEN focus on international release decisions and procedures. It's only first party that has release dates decided internationally around the same time. Metal Gear Solid 3 HD? The 3DS isn't HD... HD is amazing but it isn't needed for a game to be good.

Actually, the 3 is the "Tri" part... Tri is just to show how you say the 3 part. So really it's Monster Hunter Tri G.

Black ops? No thanks.

The 3DS's bright future?

By the looks of that peripheral, more like the 3DS's ugly future.
TheRedPlumber 15 Sep '11
black op's? if i wanted a fps shooter on the 3ds i would want it built from the ground up. As far the future for the 3ds is concerned i believe this is how the launched should of been, a very well done to nintendo and all the 3rd party support

A great effort from Nintendo :D It's a great year if your a Nintendo gamer! There are so many big series coming to 3DS, first and third party! In terms of games its one of the most exciting years, and its also fantastic news that there is a new Mario Tennis on the way :D If its got online then it will certainly be a multiplayer favorite!!! I've always enjoyed Mario Tennis (GameCube one is the best!). I like so many game series that i just can't list them! :D A great year for Nintendo!!!

I wish they had said F-Zero or Waverace was coming out soon for the 3DS but that could be to much to ask
