Mario Kart 7 gets Tanooki power-up

Use Tanooki power-up to whip opponents.

The Tanooki power-up won't only be making an appearance in Super Mario 3D Land this winter. You'll also be able to use the Tanooki power-up in Mario Kart 7.

Yes, the Tanooki power-up will give you both offensive and defensive abilities as you can use it to protect you from incoming shells and to whip opponents off the track.

It has also been revealed that you'll be able to race as your Mii character in Mario Kart 7 as well as Metal Mario and Lakitu.

Are you happy about this news?

That's brilliant, as long as it's actually a useful item, rather than a gimmick, which I'm sure it will be, it should be awesome! :D

    No grumbles here.

It should also really turn you to stone for a few seconds, as well as the tail whip action. After all, that would be a true homage to the original Tanooki.

The more things about Mario Kart 7 that make it stand out...the better.
We're used to it usually only being a new track selection and minor handling tweaks being the difference makers in Mario Karts (which felt like enough to be fair, as the series has strong gameplay roots), however these new tracks, new items, new racers, new modifications, the glider, underwater, and then little things like how we've seen a level inspired by DKC: Returns. I like the creativity going into this so far, roll on the finished product :)

    Wow! That's a great power-up!
It's like a super red koopa shell trio but you'll have to time it right to backfire those shells!
Nintendo are certainly making this the best Mariokart ever! All the new features and power-ups and just staggeringly great. :D

That Tanooki tail is a cool idea for a power-up!

It would be cool if it allowed you to jump higher, as it would open the way to shortcuts reached by platforming!

That's going to be soooo annoying in multiplayer!

Sounds like a pretty good new item... and one that involves skill.

When someone mentioned there was a leaf powerup I immediately hoped there would be a tanooki power-up with just this ability (dunno if it is tied to the leaf one, but either way it seems a cool idea).

I'd guess that it will keep you in the air longer during the hang-glider areas too...

Damn when I read that I hoped it'd make you fly :P

Woah! I love it. Could be one of the best items yet. So excited! Bring december on.

Interesting about Metal Mario, he'll be the same as Mario but heavier. Hmm... I smell interesting strategies!
