Billy Hatcher And The Giant Egg is egg-cellent

My Favourite Game: Thomas Wakelin rates Sega's cult GameCube title

Billy Hatcher And The Giant Egg features a completely new kind of hero. An egg-tastic (ahem) kind of hero. Billy Hatcher is a unique game which I stumbled upon by accident, having picked it up when I wanted a new game. Little did I know I had stumbled across an amazing game with a fantastic story and an egg-cellent (sorry) multiplayer mode when played with three friends.

The game starts with you finding out that Morning Land has been taken over by the Black Crows who have placed a mysterious magic on the land keeping it in eternal night. The chicken elders were sealed in golden eggs (you have to 'hatch' them to complete levels) but only one boy can stop the Black Crows and return Morning Land to the glory it used to be.

Billy Hatcher is a simple game - anyone can pick up and start playing through it with ease and you do get the occasional chuckle. Such as when Billy wears the legendary chicken suit and his cry when he cracks an egg with his voice.

In my opinion, there are a few camera issues that do occasionally make the game difficult and cause you to lose a few lives. But the levels are unique and the soundtrack is always a pleasure to listen to. Even if you'll end up humming it on the bus and singing it through your day-to-day routine.

Multiplayer mode is where this game really shines, featuring different game types which you can play with up to three friends but the best by far is Survival.

You can select how long the game lasts or if everyone just has lives (the latter being my favourite). The multiplayer will have you trying to put other players off, running over friends with giant eggs and (best of all) hatching Sega characters out of special eggs and using their powers to gain the lead!

You read right, Billy Hatcher can hatch Sonic The Hedgehog and friends (along with other animals) before calling on their powers to help you gain the lead in games!

For a GameCube game, the graphics are amazing and whilst the gameplay is easy, you'll have hours of fun with the game. I recommend tracking the game down as you can normally find it for a very cheap price. Go and buy it and have an egg-celent time (that'll be all for the egg jokes now)!

Thanks to Thomas Wakelin for his review. If you want to get your review published on the ONM website, write a review of your favourite game in no more than 400 words on the Reviews & Buyer's Guide forum.

I love this game, I even got my copy signed by both Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka. Just give a sequel already Sega! Stop teasing us with with his cameos in other Sega games.
