Mario Kart Wii U to use console's 'unique functions'

Mario Kart 7 producer discusses next game

Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno has spoken of his desire to create a Mario Kart Wii U game that uses the console's unique features.

"I can't get into specifics, but I do want to create a new and enjoyable Mario Kart that uses the unique functions of the Wii U," Konno told Nintendo Power.

Yet Konno refused to give away any more details, saying: "Anything beyond that I have to keep secret. Please bear with me for now."

We will Konno. Until then, perhaps you could come up with your ideas for Mario Kart Wii U. Let us know what you'd like to see in the game. Which characters should be in it, what retro courses should return and should it feature bikes and karts, or even two racers in one kart a la Double Dash?

Mario Kart 7 will be released in the UK on 2 December.

I wonder if development as started on this or whether it is similar to the preemptive smash bro. announcement - just to whet our appetites.

I believe they've said that for every single console they've made since the Nintendo DS, and for every single of their main titles. For example, take the following statement:

"I can't get into specifics, but I do want to create a new and enjoyable Mario Kart that uses the unique functions of the Wii U,"

and replace 'Mario Kart' by Zelda, Mario, etc... and 'Wii U' by Nintendo DS; Wii; 3DS.

Nintendo sure are getting lazy, using pre-recorded message for their interviews!

Seriously, as someone just said before me, this is nothing more than an early teaser... as there's no doubt there'll be a new Mario Kart on Wii U, and that it'll use the 'unique functionalities' of that console.
Can't wait to see more about that... though I'm not that eager, there's Mario Kart 7 to 'take care of' first ;)

Would like to see the controller as a steering wheel, with the screen displaying the wheel and dashboard (first person style), but that's almost a sure thing.
Another idea would be to flick shells etc from the controller onto the tv screen where you can see the players in front of you! Would bring better aiming for green shells and bananas!
Or use the controller to design an emblam for your cart (DS style)
My last idea is to use the controller as a windscreen wiper. So when you are squirted with ink, you would hold the controller up to the tv and wipe it away!

Id like to see a Mario Kart career mode, on top of the normal grand prix mode, a cinematic story line would be cool :)

Use the screen to drop a bob omb on the map, and other obstacles ie. draw on a spot to spawn an enemy or something

the camera could probably take a picture of the player and somehow use it to disrupt the other racers somehow. I'd totally give them the finger because I'm SOOOO mature.

You could tilt the entire course with an item by moving the controller if you control the characters using the thumb stick or tilt using the control stick if you steer by moving the controller

if you race in first person you could move the controller around to aim shells and such using the screen to view to the sides.

And I'd like the caps from mario 64 to be items if they wouldn't be too cheap

thats good to hear that they're going to do a Mario kart wii u.
i would like to see them use a mix of features from previous Mario kart games

kart customization from Mario kart 7
flying and underwater sections like on Mario kart 7
have an option of either 2 or one racers kind of like Mario kart double dash

i would also like to see some new features for example
the maps on the controller and when you touch the map it could drop a bomb
or have the controller as a steering wheel
and finally or maybe have the items on the controller then you flick it where you want it so throwing items is more precise

I would like the controller to display whats going on behind you.
I liked the MKWii roster but a couple of additions would be cool like Hammer bros and Kamek.
    No character stats.No bikes.
As long as they choose good retro tracks I am not bothered but please no more Shy Guy Beach etc.
But of course it will be 50/50 retro and new.

I find this story a little weird. First off, like the news about the next Zelda game for 3DS, are we really being teased about the next next game before the next game is even out? Also, its not the most revealing news nugget. I mean, of course the Wii U Mario Kart will use the Wii U's unique features. What'd be the point if it didn't? That isn't even Nintendo's style. They're always experimenting with new elements in its games. If they didn't do that, it'd be quite the shock.
I can't even think what unique functions could be implemented, but then that'd why I play video games instead of design them. I suppose the tablet controller would be the wheel, and there could be a big button on the Touch Screen that toots like a horn when you press it?

I'd like to see a track editor in the next Mario Kart which allows you to use different elements from all of the MK tracks to create your own and give it a track name. Also,a driver customizer would be good too, allowing you to create your own Mario Kart racer from different parts of Mario characters. And,like this time your kart can turn into hang gliders and boats,in the next one you should be able to time travel back to when the race started if you are doing really bad or time travel a little forward in time to get into the lead, but with a catch. You need to have so many coins that you have passed through on the track to be able to use the time travel function.

Mario Kart RPG would be epic. You start by racing in local races and eventually sign sponsorship details and race in massive grand prixs :D

  13. olrodlegacy Wednesday 9th Nov 2011 at 16:30

I'd definitely like some big changes to the formula to prevent the series becoming stale. Some sort of RPG as with Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on GBA could be the way forward.

its a while away but i look forward to it

As I think some others have said, a mix of great features would be terrific. Bring back bikes from MKWii, bring back modifying your karts from MK7, bring back the dual-passenger style from Double-Dash!!... not all in one racer, but give us options of how we want to race. Maybe the bikes are lighter and faster, but the DD karts are weighed down more (two racers, after all), but get the benefit of double items.

  16. mu3zzer Wednesday 9th Nov 2011 at 18:31

sounds as if they're a decent way into development then...
i doubt we'll get it at launch (2 Mario Karts in 2 years!) but I hope it'll be soon after!

  17. tomutwit Wednesday 9th Nov 2011 at 19:44

You should be able to look around you with the WiiU controller, see stuff incoming and whatever, and you could also deflect missiles with it if you had a certain powerup!

  18. Basty K Wednesday 9th Nov 2011 at 20:32

You know how player 2 always shot the items in Mario Kart: Double Dash? How about player 1 uses the wii controller to steer, while player 2 uses the wii u controller to shoot items and look around? Maybe you could aim red shells by aiming at the player who you want to shoot? So many possibilities!

  19. ivorfran Thursday 10th Nov 2011 at 00:31

How about a new franchise?. All we seem to read is mario this, zelda that..... give it a rest and try something original. I know i'll get replies about other nintendo games not selling well, but thats because they always retreat to a new mario kart paper world for safety, leaving anything quirky unsupported.

  20. muchaslucas Thursday 10th Nov 2011 at 11:14

As someone else has touched on, using the WiiU controller as a fixed rear view mirror

  21. PappyLaroux Friday 6th Jan 2012 at 22:40

Yes, thank you Nintendo for that enlightenment. We were expecting a simple game, with forwards, backwards over a race track. We weren't expecting you to take advantage of the systems HD graphics, or advanced processing power or touch-screen controller.
Enough of the sarcasm! Onto the real bits
Potential to have 6 people multiplayer (two on Wii U controllers, one on Wiimotes).
    Possible 12 Grand Prix's (6 Nitro, 6 Retro)
    36 Characters
    16 racers in a race
    It's just better snm
    Ability to aim shells better
    Ability to draw an emblem
Ability to make race courses of your own design, by sketching the course layout and adding elements such as boost ramps, item boxes and coins (plus obstacles like trees to decorate). Also the ability to add other elements to the track to stop it being flat (such as bumps, hills, cliffs etc.)
    Download other people's custom tracks
    Better online features (like 3ds)
    Spot Pass
Street Pass (if you keep your tablet with you)

  22. PappyLaroux Sunday 8th Jan 2012 at 18:04

Because of the power of the Wii U I think there should be
    64 Tracks
    Mission Mode
    Single Player VS
3 Battles, Balloon Battle, Coin Runners and Road Rage on Wuhu Island (drivers pick up Mii's who need to get to another place, and transport them Double Dash Style to where they need to go. If you get bumped by another car, they take your Mii passenger. The touch screen would indicate where they need to go on a map. The driver who dropped off the most Mii's wins after the time limit. Only bananas and shells. If the driver gets hit by either of these, their passenger will abandon them and run away.

Whenever a new console by Nintendo is launched now I always want buy it ASAP mainly because of the Mario Kart series in general it's still really good fun.

With Mario Kart Wii U or Mario Kart 8 if they are going to call it that, I think the game should have DLC like more tracks, parts to build your kart and the ability to play racing or battling online with 12 players either all against each other or team-based. I also think they need more gimmicks like loops and springs but mainly I'd like more tracks to be based of Super Mario Galaxy 2 those enviornments looked epic and to see it in this game with the Wii U being more powerful than the Wii I think we could have a Mario Kart game with similar Super Mario Galaxy 2 visuals that will easily be the best Mario Kart game yet!

I think that these should be the characters (just in my opinion)
    Diddy Kong
    Bowser Jr.
    Petey Piranha
    Dry Bones
    Shy Guy
    Fly Guy
    King Bob-Omb
    Chauncey (the baby ghost)
    Baby Mario
    Baby Yoshi

If there is 2 characters in 1 kart, every lap the other character could take over from the other.

I think it should use the gamepad like in new super mario bros u so you can play in bed. but when playing with others you can drop obsticles or useful upgrades in their way.
