Zelda director not satisfied with Ocarina Of Time

Find out why

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time is one of the greatest games of all time but Nintendo's Naoki Mori, director of cinematics for the N64 classic, has never been satisfied with it.

Why? Because due the the constraints of the N64 hardware, Zelda's expression wasn't how he envisaged. It's only with The Legend Of Zelda Spirit Tracks that Mori was able to achieve his goal.

During the latest Iwata Asks discussion, producer Eiji Aonuma said: "Mori-san has really dedicated himself to how to portray Zelda. That was true for Tetra in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Princess Zelda in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and, to go back even further, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time."

However, as Aonuma admitted, they didn't get it quite right with Ocarina Of Time. "Some people are still playing it, so I can't be too specific, but the last scene. He [Mori] just couldn't settle on an expression for her face."

Mori added: "That was for the Nintendo 64 system, so there were hardware limitations to what we could express. I asked about adding one more expression for eyes, but they said it was impossible. I proceeded with what was available, but it just didn't look right to me. I ended up frustrated to the very end."

Mori wanted Zelda to have more vivid facial expressions and he only achieved this with Spirit Tracks. "Later on, I worked on storyboards based upon scripts that others had written, but The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was the first time I wrote scripts for cinematic scenes... I was like, "Yes! This is my Zelda!!"

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time was re-released for 3DS earlier this year. Here's our Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time review

He shouldn't worry too much, Ocarina of Time is a great game! It's been regarded as one of the greatest games of all time for a reason! :) The graphical style adds character to the game :)

I always thought she looked a bit odd in that final scene, even when I first played it. However, I did love Zelda in Spirit Tracks. It was great to see her have more character injected into her than any over game before it.

OK! We all know you like ocarina of time! I get it. but stop CONSTINTLY reminding us of how much you love it. For so many of us it wasn't the best zelda game, ok?
And even IT isn't good enough to remake and be ported 4 times!

Oh let him be critical of it! It's when you stop being self critical of your own work that you stop getting any better.

Well, if that's the only fault you can find in a game you made I would say it went pretty well =] I don't think people are going to mind too much about one facial expression, especaially because the game's so wonderful.

We need people like him. Perfectionists that are never happy, no matter how wonderful the things they create. Getting properly frustrated over a detail like this is commendable.

However, I don't think his problem was fixed in the 3D remake, was it?
