Wii U will push boundaries with 'full range of entertainment' - Reggie

Nintendo want an even broader audience for Wii U

Reggie Fils-Aime has hinted that Wii U will be more than just a gaming machine by saying that the console will push the boundaries "not only for gaming but for a full range of entertainment."

Speaking with Spike TV, Nintendo's US boss said that Nintendo wanted to reach an even broader audience with Wii U.

"With Wii, [we sold] 90 million units sold across the globe. Only with the Wii were you able to get grandparents playing with parents playing with kids. What we're looking to do with Wii U is to continue driving a broader audience and drive a large install base - if not larger - than we were able to do with Wii.

"Fundamentally the way we will do that is with the Wii U controller. It's got a built-in touch screen, it's got all of your standard game buttons in the front, in the back and what it will do is create a two screen gaming experience. That's where the innovation is and we believe that not only for gaming but for a full range of entertainment it's going to continue pushing the boundaries."

In the same interview, Fils-Aime said that Nintendo will be sharing more Wii U information throughout 2012.

Basically, he's saying we want even more money from the Wii U than the Wii.

"A complete entertainment experience", this comes as no shock to me, after all the XBOX 360 and PSŁ have been full entertainment experiences from day 1. The Wii even had apps for watching BB iPlaer and the recent NetFlix app too, and whatever HomeBrew media players you could install (DVD player etc.). So I'm hoping that if Reggie is banging on about a complete entertainment experience, then I get my expectations raised and think it should be better than XBOX 360 and PS3. What will happen in reality is that it will be a half hearted and half baked entertainment experience that can't even play Blu-Rays! :(

So doe's that mean that will be getting Blu Ray support?

I certainly hope so. While not that important why say "a full range of entertainment".

Lighten up. And it's not like a games console has to play Blu-rays at all. I don't even care if it doesn't play DVDs in general, that's what I have a DVD player for.

Yeah I get your point, I actually have a standalone blu-ray player anyway, I was just speaking for those that don't.

If anything, movies will be presented without the need to go out and buy Blu-Ray Discs. Especially as, which I believe strongly, everyone either has a DVD or Blu-Ray player... So if you already have one connected, the Wii U having Blu-Ray support would render what you've bought or have connected useless. Primarily, it's a gaming machine... It will play disc and download games but also have games you can play just on the screen like in the demo. There are so many things that can be done with this console, as well as having the Wii Remotes be optional controllers in Wii U games or necessary as well as the touch controller like in games like the Wii U Zelda. Not only that but the Wii U could feature a music store, with the option of downloading chart music and also game soundtracks that could be blasted through the controller itself. There are so many possibilities, I love it. I love how in online games, instead of having a headset, you there are 2 mics included on the controller so you can literally just chat while playing.

No, it means the Wii captured multi-generational support but they want to keep that install base and gain the more hardcore audience on top of that... Making this an accessible platform with the main controller and having Wii U games keep Wii Remote support.

nope the Wii U uses, "high density optical discs" with a 25GB+ capacity apparently, this means they'll be at least as big as Blu-ray and in some cases bigger.
But no it won't be using 'actual' Blu-ray.

On a completely random offshoot, since WiiU is backwards compatible, and it's intended to sell as well as the Wii, I hope this means the price of Wii remotes will drop. I mean seriously, there is an endless list of great games to buy for less than that third or fourth remote so you can play with grandma too.

To be honest I don't actually care for other features on a console, because I buy a games console to play video games. I have a DVD player to play my movies. I actually hope that it doesn't support Blu-ray because it'll just be more expensive with it! As long as a games console delivers in quality games, comfortable controls, good online features, innovation and some new ideas then that's all that really matters, isn't it? The Wii U looks like it'll certainly deliver in these areas, so i'm looking forward to it :)

blu ray is a ridiculous format anyway, if it keeps the pricing down then don't put it in. Streaming Media or even direct downloads are much better ways of piping media.

    Changing discs is for suckers
