The Mario Kart series might be named after the world's number one videogames character but when we asked ONM readers to pick their favourite Mario Kart driver, the plump plumber didn't come out on top. 7. Koopa Troopa
And what a car it was. It was literally a green shell on wheels with incredibly shiny hubcaps (Turtle Wax?) that he drove with the assistance of a Paratroopa. He returned again in Mario Kart Wii where he owned his own track - the brilliant Koopa Cape which was back as a retro track in Mario Kart 7 along with Koopa Troopa Beach.
Koopa Troopa's inclusion shows that you prefer lightweight karters to the likes of Donkey Kong and Bowser.
Siss3lGamer says: "I always pick Koopa Troopa, because he is a turtle and you simply can't pick a character that isn't a turtle because turtles are awesome. He is small, making him a smaller target, and he is also quite fast off-road."
6. Baby Luigi
Baby Luigi also gave his name to a track - the brilliant Baby Park, with its eight laps of item-flinging mayhem.
Frazapple says: Baby Luigi is my favourite. He has a super-fast green buggy that can be pulled along by a giant Chain Chomp to knock Diddy Kong as far away as possible.

It is a bit easier to unlock your Mii in Mario Kart 7 as you just need to win all the cups in 50cc.
Turboman says: "I always play as myself in outfit B in Mario Kart Wii just to rub it in everyone's faces that I have ALL 32 expert staff ghosts and that I am awesome!"
4. Dry Bones
Like Yoshi and Toad, he has great acceleration and handles brilliantly but he's slightly lacking when it comes to top speed.
I mostly play as Yoshi!
I wish Dixie Kong was a playable character. If Funky Kong is, why not her?

I used to play as Yoshi all the time but since Mario Kart 7 is out, I play as Shy Guy instead. He's just awesome!
I always use to play as Toad, but now I prefer Yoshi,bowser, and honey queen!
I still have to unlock all of the characters in MK7!

I always play as the most obscure character, the ones who will probably only be in one Mario Kart game- R.O.B., Dry Bowser, King Boo etc. I'm finding myself playing Lakitu at the moment.
I'm not a fan of Yoshi, he's one of my least Favourite characters in Smash Bros and it's carried over to Mario Kart. Maybe I should give him a chance!
Wiggler because he acts like most mario kart players I've seen, he gets REALLY angry when he gets hit. I find him easy to relate to

I played as Yoshi in Super Mario Kart and I never stopped.
Same here (for the first part)! I always used to play as King Boo, Dry Bones, R.O.B, etc. And I play as Lakitu too!
But, I am a fan of Yoshi when it comes to Mario Kart (although I agree with you when it comes to Smash Bros, don't really like playing as Yoshi). The less obscure characters I play as is Mario, Luigi and Yoshi (like in the older games)...but I tend to play as obscure ones as soon as they are unlocked. My favourite was King Boo though, and it sucks he didn't return.
I mostly play as my Mii online in lieu of an emblem. I want other players to see my face and quake in fear.
Bring back emblems and it would be Yoshi all the way (until The Chimp finally gets put in).
in mario kart 7, i play using the pipe frame kart, normal wheels and koopa troopa. and then do lots of lightning cup grand prix or online races to seem nostalgic. the pipe frame kart is a wonderful idea, and koopa troopa is the original light guy who beasts everyone to the post. i don't know why we have honey queen and metal mario when we could have had dry bones and maybe funky kong. they lack personality, and everyone loved playing as dry bones and funky kong.
that said, koopa trooper is allways the one for me in mario kart 7. in wii, i play as yoshi, ds - dry bones double dash - paratroopa and toad, super circuit - luigi, 64 - yoshi or luigi
it changes from game to game. but its a shame they lost paratroopa. that said, i'm the only person who played as paratroopa...

just to put it out there to those struggling at a low level on wi-fi. choose a light character(shy guy) pipe frame and small weels really gets you far. trust me blue shells mean nothing in this combo
I always play as Shy Guy on Mario Kart 7.........and I would if he was on the other ones. Glad to see he's in Mario Party 9. Shy Guy deserves more playable appearnces.
I used Baby Mario/Luigi and Toad/Toadette in GC,
Mario in DS,
Funky Kong in Wii,
Metal Mario in 3DS.
Metal Mario (or the heavy class) is easily the best class in MK7 and you can see it online. I or Heavy characters always seem to place 1st in my games..
I always play as Wriggler in Mario Kart 7.He just stands out for me,especially when he turns red after getting hit.He seems to be quite quick as well.Before MK7,my favourite was Dry Bones because he seemed quite fast to me.
If you've raced me you'll already know I will be toad no matter what mario kart I'm playing (except for double dash)

NINTENDO should remake all MARIO KART games out using the DOUBLE DASH gameplay mechanics and the great music style that accompanied the tracks. More characters included though, and also bring back the ALL-STAR CUP.
As for characters I play as, I'm split between KOOPA, DRY BONES, and TOAD depending on the version and I play with the TOAD/PARATROOPER combo on DOUBLE DASH. Although on MK7 I play as my MII.
And I always use STANDARD karts .
I mostly play as bowser but, maybe I should play as mario or yoshi more often.
Best character in Mario Kart 7? SHY GUY!!!!! I'm SOOOOOO glad he is finally a normal character rather than just a Download Play extra.
I love Yoshi so much, I can't help but imitate him all the time haha and I'm 21! He's probably the cutest video game character and definitely deserves his own full game at some point.
Well I've had a favourite for Double Dash, DS, Wii, and 3DS.
For Double Dask I used to play as Paratroopa and Baby Luigi.
For DS, it was Dry Bones.
For Wii it was Baby Peach.
And now for 3DS it's Shy Guy, just because he's awesome!

I normally play as Baby Luigi in MarioKart Wii, but in the 7th, it's got to be Lakitu
R.O.B was my favourite inclusion because I didn't see it coming at all. Thats right I managed to avoid any spoilers and it was a genuine surprise when I unlocked him. However with MK7 it's shyguy all the way.
Mario all the way for me. Not only am I a huge fan of his, he is also all rounded in all spin off games and not only Mario Kart. Used to play as Toad when the game was new in Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, but since Double Dash, I always picked Mario.
yes for paratroopa and toad! i loved that combo, as you just got loads of boosts and shells. shame he was dropped for wii. for goodness sakes, he's much better than baby daisy. like, 4 baby characters is too much in wii when we don't have one in seven. petey pirahna was okay in double dash, but i prefered playing as a character who allways got the same special items. but paratroopa was cool, and a beast. me and my sis allways used to play double dash, and i would allways drive, she'd fire items, and i'd just be paratroopa, smashing through the field and occasionally throwing back red shells galore.

I hate Toad. Hate him, hate him, hate him. His horrible screechy voice, his yelling, the way he says 'I'm the best' so much.

I, unfortunatly only had the Wii Version and the 3DS version.
Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - I used Yoshi when I started, but ever since I unlocked Mii - Outfit A, I can't get Outfit B (Stupid SNES Ghost Valley 2 Expert Ghost! I can't unlock it!) -, I always played as myself (and occasionally I changed the Mii on my licence to Simon Cowell, to play as him)
Mario Kart 7 (3DS) - Again, I used Yoshi until I unlocked Mii's (in 100cc), but then I tried to get the "Retro" cup characters first, and when I got Lakitu, I then played as him in the Cloud-Kart-Thingie.
But once I unlocked Metal Mario (who wasn't as slow as I thought), I've played as him ever since.
So overall, I would put Yoshi, Mii, and Metal Mario at the top!

But at the same time he seems like a fan favourite, unlike other characters I might pick such as Birdo (I know, I know, but I worked long and hard for Barney's niece and I want to make up for it with some race time)

Oo yes, Paratroopa. I played as him quite a bit. I sometimes doubled him with King Boo! I feel that his wings help. LOL! XD
