Animal Crossing 3DS: 5 things I'd do as Mayor

Steve Hogarty is looking forward to being a mayor in Animal Crossing 3DS

In his latest weekly blog, ONM Deputy Editor Steve Hogarty tells us what he will do when he is appointed Animal Crossing 3DS mayor. That's after a bit of waffle. Not the Belgian dough-based cake...

We've all just finished drawing up our Top 20 Best Ever Nintendo Games Ever To Have Ever Been lists. They've been whispered into the ear of a mouse, who will keep them a secret on his journey to the tallest tower in London, where he will tell them to a wise old fox. The fox, burdened by knowledge of our favourite games, will immediately perish.

As he turns to dust his remains will be carried in every direction by the changing winds, and cast he will be upon the fields. From Clapham Common to Hackney Downs, he will fall, and in his wake there will grow four great oak trees.

The trees will be cut down by a cantankerous old flute maker who no longer believes in the power of magic, and used to make the most precious flute in all the land. That night, at the big Royal Banquet, the flute will be handed to the beautiful Princess Kate, who is not only a beautiful princess but also an accomplished flautist.

As she begins to play before an audience of thousands, a voice will float from the flute-holes, louder and louder. It will be the mouse's voice. It will sing, "Chris Scullion's tenth favourite Nintendo game is Su--"

Whoops, almost spoiled it for you. I can, however, tell you what one of the games in my own list was. It was Animal Crossing DS. So obviously I'm very much anticipating the upcoming Animal Crossing 3DS game, the 3DS sequel to Animal Crossing DS.

I've heard it lets you become the mayor of your village, so here are five things I would do if I were mayor of a village of animals.

1. More K.K. Slider Gigs

I'm not sure what singing, travelling (homeless?) dog K.K. Slider does all week before showing up in everybody's towns simultaneously for a Saturday evening gig. I think he might ride around the countryside pointing at buildings, talking about nunneries with an uplifting candor, like a transdimensional, quantum-entangled Billy Connolly. If I were mayor that mutt would be barking showtunes down at Brewster's twenty-four-freakin'-seven. No excuses.

2. Astroturf The Place

As Animal Crossing mayor I'll often "take long vacations" or "not play the game for a little while", so rather than have unsightly weeds crop up all over town, a few acres of astroturf will be laid down to ensure that the village is kept in pristine condition. This might have a few side-effects: no more treasure, no more burrowing, reset-loathing moles, but I really think it's in the animals' best interest that the entire ground be torn up and replaced with a safe, synthetic alternative.

It's either this or I pave the place in second-hand lino. If I were mayor I'd take all the grass, put it in a big pile and set fire to it.

3. Restricted Airspace

Unlicensed and unmonitored aircraft are a skyborne menace above our villages. That animals can blithely launch dozens of gifts tethered to cheerful red balloons is a travesty. They have no consideration for where those balloons may end up and whose mayor's house they might fly over - I see it and I chase it but before I can get my slingshot out it's floated away and I'm disappointed for the rest of the day.

  4. bennyt Thursday 19th Jan 2012 at 15:41

    Liking them all, very good.

Although this will be my first Animal Crossing game, i hope the weeding isn't going to be a pain...kinda hoping that you use x amount of play coins and poof... bye-bye weeds for a couple of days...

Other than that, as Major either...peanut butter jelly time or PARTY!!!

I for one will stick up for Tom Nook! He's the best video game character ever and I will be extremely annoyed if he isn't in the New Smash Bros throwing turnips and carpets at the likes of Mario and Link.
When I'm mayor I'll make everyone sends of balloons, only those with a terrible aim can miss them. I will even send off my own and see which lucky villager of my awesome town (NuttyVil) will reveive this spectacular gift.
Finally, I will personally make sure that every single one of my villagers is armed with a net and I will lay down mines that can only be activated from undeneaththe soil to keep the pesky Resetti away. If he comes up and says a single word about the mayor of the town above his underground burrow, swarms of blue frogs, agent squirells and posh penguins will unleash their fury and Resetti himself will be the one turning off the power without saving, to keep him from this truley horrible pain.
This town NuttyVil will rain over all the other towns. Tom Nook will be my apprentice, Tortimer shall be thy body guard and Phyliss shall be sent to the dungeons with Apollo.
    WE WILL RAIN VICTORIOUS!

    @CyberGW: I'm sorry, what?

Also, this beats our suggestion of eating neighbors at street parties.

5 things I would do as mayor

    1) More events

I'd like to add more events and different unique ones! Ones which can occur at night time, with a bonfire, tents and a sleepover!

    2) Choose where to put villagers homes

I'd love to be able to put MY favourite villager next to me and my least favourite out of sight!

    3) Outside Stage

I'd LOVE to be able to host concerts with more singers and performers other than K.K slider! (though I love him very much, he's my fave visitor!)

    4) Build a cinema

More entertainment is needed! More places to hang out with your friends and little animal crossing cartoons should be added each month! That would be amazing!

    5) A notice board

We all need a notice board, but this time, villagers can post, for example, are they going to host a party? when, where, why!

If I was Mayor, I would have an expansion plan to make the village much bigger! Get the builders in! The DS version seemed so small! Enjoyed the game, though!

  10. tomutwit Thursday 19th Jan 2012 at 16:56

I think animals should apply for planning permission before they arrive. That way they wouldn't build houses ON MY FREAKING CROSSBREEDING FLOWER PATCH

And yeah the astroturf idea is amazing. Resetti would attempt to come yell at ya, be unable to escape his synthetic ceiling and suffocate. Ahhhh.

  11. Waldy565 Thursday 19th Jan 2012 at 17:29

a few acres of astroturf, yes! K.K. Slider could make a cameo BEFORE saturday, or he's in the city, in a smoky corner of a club, like the good films!

Steve, your blogs are quite simply the best pieces of literature on the internet. That is all.

If I became mayor in Animal Crossing, I would:

    1) immediately sack the imposed deputy mayor & and leader of the Liberal Demamice, C. l Egg, after his disastrous failure in stopping tor(y)timers harsh fee increases at the local school.

    2) hunt down & "take care of" the VLP (village local party) and it's insane bird leader, simply know as Griffin, after their prejudice towards red squirels turned to a series of extremist murders.

    3) Turn the village communist, taking inspiration from the teachings of philosopher Karl Minx, and of Thrussia's old leader Vladamir lenbrador, so as to stop the harsh crony capitalism enforced by tom nook.

    4) Enplace a sophisticated earthquake and tsunami defnence system. The recent destruction in Jaguarpan was a wake up call, and despite past events and a heavy risk of future devastation, the village has no current means of getting through such a disaster. I aim to stop this!

    5) Upgrade our defences with more sophisticated yachts armed with canons and compasses. Every resident of the village will receive a free slingshot, as well as a beehive, and a one and a quarter metre high fence will be put in place around the village.

    1) MORE SHOPS!
there are not enough what about a shoe one and a better top and hat ect shop.. be abale to run and own your own shop too would be good..and what about a shop just for things for the home and not the gracy grace stuff.. pay in installments for items that are more than 30,000 bells

    2) rent rather than buy your home if you so wanted.

    3) more things to do
EG colleting shells and displaying them.. more things to collect from digging up like coins and rare trinkets

    4) get loans from the bank to buy that item you cant quite afford but so really want.. and have like a 50 bell a day charge.. and mini credit rating so you can only borrow so much..

    5) stop the time travel function why do we need it? i have been playing my game for years since ye old gamecube and never used it once.. but i herd that it messes up the game anyways..

anyways thats some of the things i would do but 5 is the limit :)

A few of my ideas have already been said. Sad times. But glad to know there is someone out there who wants the same things. Love your ideas Steve. I have loads, but I'll list only a few.
    1. Loads of building!
I want the town the way I want it and design and change it whenever I feel like. People will live where I want. And if someone annoys me...their house will look like crap. I also want to make paths, benches and a plaza as well as streetlights (so we can be safe from killer scorpions and the town rapist). I'd also want to make a cinema. Let's have funny clips with Animal Crossing people playing Nintendo Characters, as well as the animals. Also, an outdoor stage. We could have K.K. play outside during events like the fireworks during August. We could also have plays, played by local residents. Imagine the animals act out Shakespeare. Or a new character who acts on Broadway! Also, how about things like a treehouse, or a tree complex! And other buildings too!! Like a Gym for the jock residents.
    2. More events!
First we had real life events, then made up ones, then a mix but it wasn't enough! I want loads and loads. How about in conjunction with the fireworks in August, we have a camping event? We could have tents and sleeping bags and a bonfire! And we could roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories. This is why we need a plaza. In the old games, there were sets that were made for outside...but we couldn't put it outside. Needs to change.
    3. As well as your own!
I want to be able to hold my own events, and let the other residents hold some too! You can post them on the notice board, and the other residents can post too. Or you can send messages so others don't come (or they might find out! DRAMA!). You could invite people over for sleepovers, or a party or just for some coffee. (And some items need to work, like the coffee machine!)
    4. Residents!
Sometimes, it all gets too much. A resident just won't leave you alone and you can't stand them. Time for eviction! Tell them to get out or you'll get your goons on them! And if Resetti gets too annoying, tell him to get lost! Also, why don't the residents do tasks for Nook too or get bigger houses? Would be nice to see someone else be his bi---! I will make sure they are all subjected to Nook's rule (if I let him stay MUWHAHA!).
    5. Want a Job?
I think it'd be great if we could have loads of new buildings, and people can work there. Imagine seeing a resident working in the clothes shop. OR...maybe make their own shop! And maybe you could work somewhere too! Or make your own as well! Also, unrelated, Night at the Museum in the Town's Museum! WOULD BE EPIC! And Jurassic Park! XD

I know some of my ideas were said by others but I've had these ideas for ages as well, like others. Just so happens we have similar ones, and why not, they're great! XD
I have so many other ones too. Vehicles for example. I don't want to list them all because that'll take forever. I have ideas regarding other areas of the game, but of course, this is only about being Mayor! Whoops...massive post! XD

good ideas, something I would do is put Nook to work and run errands for me as pay back for the previous games. I would love to tax villagers as well.

  19. skyluigi Friday 20th Jan 2012 at 17:46

I'm thinking about Animal Crossing 3DS. I know Wild World used the top screen for the sky so you could see balloons and things, but what now? The 3D screen'll probably be used for your character to run around on, and the sky will be like it was in Let's Go To The City. But that leaves the touch screen. I've got a feeling it'll be used for inventory or a map, but who knows?

  20. Tikoru Sunday 22nd Jan 2012 at 14:30

I've seen a pic of the 3ds town (more of an island) soooo coool

5 ideas they could add that would make my Animal Crossing Life for 3DS better:

    More Events:
I agree more events! u guys alredy explained in details so I just skip an explantion...

    Musical Hold Items:
I alway like the musical furniture :D but i can't play on the outside :( so it be nice to just walk down the street playing guitar or start a parade with friends

    Surfin' Da Beech!:
The first item i got on animal crossing was... you gessd it: a surfboard! so i went to the beach droppd the board and after several trys i realised... -_-' i cant surf can I. Other transportation mite be nice too but b/c u can swim mostly surfin.

    Moving Pets:
I always wanted a dog or cat or somthing i could keep... the closest I got was bugs... fish... and furniture items. Having a little dog or cat following you around town will be very fun!

    More Upgradable Shops:
I'm a little dissapointed about the fact that Nooks is the only upgradable shop, I reckon the able sisters could expand on their house and add more clothes, and also shop add more shops or split the shops into different retailers: one for wall and floors, other furniture, another for plants, several shops for each area of clothing, maybe food too!

  21. TwoDaysAgo Sunday 22nd Jan 2012 at 14:37

I hope there will be Spotpass. *Dramatic sigh* I'm still playing Wild World after two long years and have still had not a single person pass through my gates. *hint*
