Wii U wish list: 2. Smash Bros Wii U

8 things that would be cool in the new Smash Bros

The Wii U release date may be set for 2012 but Smash Bros Wii U, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated game for the console, won't be available for some time. Indeed Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai recently said as much, claiming that Smash Bros Wii U may take a while. So while we wait, I've been thinking of things I'd like to see in Smash Bros Wii U.

ONM can't wait to see Nintendo gaming legends - plus a few other chums - battling it out on famous courses, areas and landmarks, while a wave of nostalgia is thrown around like confetti.

Smash Bros Brawl was seen as the pinnacle of the series and included more content, features, characters, courses and unlockables than you'd normally get in three games, let alone one. So it's a challenge to think about how Sakurai and his team could top it.

This is a challenge I'm going to accept. Here are 8 things I'd like to see in Smash Bros Wii U.

1. More New Characters

OK, let's get the most obvious wish out of the way. Though Brawl was absolutely crammed with content, like the greedy gamers that we are, we want even more.

It would be great to see new-ish characters such as Professor Layton and Maxwell from Scribblenauts making their way into the game, alongside some older favourites like King K. Rool, or perhaps even Wart from Super Mario Bros 2, complete with some form of vegetable attack. There are, of course, even more characters crying out to be included from both the past and present so there's plenty of scope there.

Also, playing as your Mii would be fun too. Plus, using the tools on the Wii U controller you could perhaps record your own sound effects for the character to make it that little bit more unique.

2. New Stages

Smash Bros Brawl brought us lots of stages based on classic GameCube games but for Smash Bros Wii U we need some Wii and 3DS ones. Who wouldn't love to fight on a Super Mario Galaxy course or have a battle around Wuhu Island? Also, it's not the best game, but can you imagine having Steel Diver submarines attacking you as you fight off Ganon?

Or perhaps even a stage based on Super Mario 3D Land with cardboard Goombas, moving platforms and so on.

3. New courses and characters when you play

This isn't particularly a new concept for Nintendo but one that they haven't really utilised. Remember how you could unlock Rosalina for Mario Kart Wii if you had played Mario Galaxy on the same system and finished 50 races. It would be great if this idea could be used in Smash Bros Wii U.

    You disgust me

Definitely not 3, UNLESS it was play Super Mario Galaxy and win 50 matches OR win 200 matches. Making a character exclusive to people who've purchased another game is silly, and whilst it may seem like a reward, it's locking out people who don't want to or can't purchase the game from ever using that bit of content that they've paid for.

7 would be interesting, but not as a substitute for the normal brawl/melee modes. It could work well if you could choose moves or put power points on certain ones, or proficiencies to make the character faster, damage resistant etc. but it'd ruin it if that was normal across all modes because people would play far too much, level up their character to the max and stomp on everyone who's just started or is trying to get the level-ups.

And as for Orchestrated music, possibly. Not for everything, if they brought Sonic back I wouldn't want 'Seven Rings In Hand' done as a full orchestra piece, but it'd be nice for some of the tracks.

I agree with everything else though. I'd love to see some more interesting characters, and for the love of Miyamoto, MAKE TOON LINK AND ADULT LINK DIFFERENT. Toon link could have been able to glide with the Deku leaf, or use the mirror shield or something. I'd just love to see the two characters be vastly different rather than clones bar minor tweaks. Same for Cpt. Falcon and Ganon, Fox Falco and Wolf, and all the others that are essentially clones. I suppose that's where move tweaks may help, thinking about it...
Same goes for Stages as well, I'd love to see some original stages, and hopefully more 3rd party ones as well as Characters. As much as it was a "lolwut?" moment when Solid Snake was put in the game, he somewhat fit and made it that much more unique and insane at the same time. Prehaps if they'd put in, I don't know, Ocelot as well and put Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow in for the hedgehogs.

If the past Line-ups for SSB games are to be believed, the starting roster will be about as big as Brawl's full roster. So there'll be a lot of characters - why not span out the character library? Even if they add some in like Layton that wouldn't typically be thought of as SSB characters. I'd love to see some more 3rd parties in there though.

    Just my views though.

Super Smash Bros. World Cup. Where people of the same series battle against other series' to see who is best.

new characters are great. but no clones this time around, it's frustrating trying to unlock characters when at they end of the day they're almost exactly the same as someone else you have like Fox, Falco and Wolf

I know that more characters was mentioned but specifically I would like to see Mega Man. You could even take their abilities when you KO a character. And I know this isn't about Smash Bros., but I think it would be cool if they branched out Mario Kart to be more like Smash Bros. Add characters and courses from Zelda and Metroid and other Nintendo franchises. That would be sweet.

  8. Waldy565 Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 17:57

i really want nintendo to do more games that unlock things in other games like rosalina and mario kart. remember having ratchet and clank for ps2, and they had compatiability between them, i really hope nintendo investiagate into this! a different single player mode would be awesome, and the orchastrel music would be too!

As long as they pop Lord Ghirahim in there, I'll be fine :L

Seriously though, I may be the only person who would like this, but I would like to see the character rosters between the Wii U and 3DS to be a bit different. Clearly the classic characters and obvious ones will be in both versions but I really want to see the games stand apart from each other. And a tweaked character roster would definitely help.

I can only agree with this. Don't get me wrong I love smash bros so much I'd buy them both even if they were just clones of each other but I think comments Sakurai made during interviews around E3 2011 suggest that they will be different.
Personally I'm hoping for greater aesthetic customisation. I don't won't a roster full of Daisy's and Shadow's but alternative costumes with different voices and taunts etc would be brilliant. I'd like to see more villains as well. Brawl made a start but it must be King K. Rool and Ridley's time.
Finally please let me use the Gamecube controller. I've been playing smash bros with it for almost nine years and trying to play with anything else is like learning a new language, possible but I'm never as good with it as my first tongue.

interesting choice of guest charcters (mind you im sure alot of us have thought about having layton in smash)

Kumatora or Duster as the next Mother character (but knowing Nintendo, they'll probably take one out instead), and Giygas could be one of the bosses as well as Porky.
Also, Shadow or Knuckles have to be included.

  14. phlum Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 19:09

It'd be interesting to see John-117 or Doomguy in SSB but it's highly likely that it won't happen. A Magicka wizard, on the other hand...

Then again, would Nintendo allow characters from non-console franchises?

  15. Midknights Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 19:17

Just give me Sylux and i'll be fed.

  16. lminett Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 19:28

Lets be honest, theres no point putting layton in the new game, he would be rubbish, be a waste of a character slot. Lets have characters like waluigi, dark samus, samurai goroh and King k. rool in the game, these are the type of characters we want. Also as for miis thats another no no.

As for an RPG mode? no way, maybe it could be some kind of level meter to show how much of the games content you've unlocked but for actaully levelling up? no thanks!

The levels from the wii and 3ds will be cool and no doubt some brawl levels will return. Levels from the galaxy games, DKCR, Metroid other m, Super mario land 3d, mario kart 7, Pokemon black/white, would be all welcome.

  17. Starman64O Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 19:33

Just give me Layton, Amaterasu, Shulk, Mii and Tingle (just for a punchbag, like Diddy), and if Lucario hasn't returned, I'll be dissappointed

  18. smashbros-kid Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 19:34

Sakurai has said that 3rd party characters will only be allowed if they:
Have appeared on a Nintendo console (no master chief for example)
Originate from video games (no anime characters and the like)

He's also said in the past that characters must have contributed greatly to Nintendo. He was hesitant to put Snake in as most gamers see him as being a Sony character. This is why I doubt we'll be seeing Cloud as his 20 minute cameo on the GBA Kingdom Hearts is hardly a massive contribution.

I also doubt we'll be seeing multiple characters from the same 3rd party developer, let alone 3rd party series. It's a tad unfair if Sega say get two representatives and Konami only one. It's primarily a Nintendo game and so it should remain. Apart from perhaps Mega Man I can't think of that many more 3rd party guys joining. At most I reckon they'll be 5 3rd party representatives but more likely there'll only be about 4.

  19. lagiasyd Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 19:44

I would like less gimmicky, interfering stages. Theres a reason why final destination was so popular online in SSBB, It was pure and simple and allowed for more focus on fighting.

Also, i want to play as charcters from okami and xenoblade. Heropon Riki anyone?

  20. Samster64 Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 20:03

i liked the way brawl and melee had stages from previous titles, but if they actually took this concept and made the stages better and put in a little less of them (say 2 from each game) and gave them more music (two pieces a stage?...theyre not even trying!) then taht'd be sweet. also, include all the characters that haven't returned from melee (i think dr mario could just be an unlockable alternative clothing for mario though) one last thing: PAPER MARIO!! his moves could be partners from the first two games: up special = parakarry, down special = admiral bobbery, side special = koops and special = watt, maybe...i dunno, seems quite a good idea to me, toon link is playable so why not paper mario?

  21. FamilyGAMEGuy8 Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 20:25

Ok Nintendo, it's time for a lesson. When making a game with playable characters...DON'T! TAKE! ANY! OUT!!!
The idea is to have as many as possible in order to have more variety. Also bring back Mewtwo. There was NO reason for getting rid of him...and Mike Jones from Startropics. That series needs more love....(3DS Sequel please?)

  22. shadowlugia101 Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 20:29

i agree with the idea of the 3ds and wii u rosters being different but i hope they dont overload the game with to many stupid third party characters as it ruins the whole point of smash bros being about nintendo characters fighting nintendo characters

  25. colourblindyoshi Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 22:08

i just want to see some characters that arent cloned. like, couldnt falco's final smash be an arwing in brawl? or something different?

also, who wanted like wolf? why couldnt we have like another metroid or f zero dude?

i have wanted since brawl one of these characters:

    sa-x
fusion suit samus - final smash being the awesome suit you get at the end
    any f zero character.

i would love the sa-x but it would have to be overpowered and a beast to be realistic

fusion suit samus could be a faster weaker samus, but slightly different attacks and some awesome things like the speed booster or something

other than that... no pay dlc, it just isnt right, especially for online modes and nintendo. i don't want to be a troll, but 3 is such a bad idea it should be cast of into oblvion for essentially being 30 quid dlc.

if the subspace emissary could be turned into some Little big planet inspired community thingymagig, i would run to nintendo and give everyone there a free hug.

content was good enough in the old one. the only thing i wish for, but it will never ever happen, would be a mix up of the rumored ps3 game title fight, and this. never going to happen, but who doesnt want to see captain falcon falcon punch nathan drake in the face?

  26. Dan-the-Wii-man Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 22:28

I think the 3DS version should be really different - maybe have that RPG type mode on there - an make it so you could build up your character little by little on your 3DS then bring them together for the Wii U version similar in the way that the pokemon games connected with stadium and red/blue.

About new charcters... PAPER MARIO!!!!!!!!!! Seriously all his paper based moves would be awesome - plane to glide, turn sideways to dodge... it would be amazing!! :D

  27. sciqueen Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 22:54

I love someone's suggestion of Paper Mario!

Bring back Mewtwo, Lucario is a B-list Pokemon!

  28. TheVelvetRoom Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 23:13

I think we should really shake up the roster this time instead of having all the usual characters again and again. Replace clone characters for one, like having Lucas replace Ness. I'd also say get rid of Ganondorf and bring in Ghirahim. Ganondorf is cool and all, but we only need one villain from Zelda and one that can have an original moveset is something worth sacrificing the King of the Gerudo for.

  29. Dave-O Thursday 26th Jan 2012 at 23:43

I would like to see Ghirahim or Demise from Skyward Sword and Ryu from Street Fighter. I really would like to see Lloyd and Kratos from Tales of Symphonia with some of the music from the game.

  30. greycloud007 Friday 27th Jan 2012 at 01:22

I want to play as Amaretsu, Mewtwo and Banjo-Kazooie!

  31. Eragon Firesword Friday 27th Jan 2012 at 08:48

I hate to write an inane "where was X?" post but really... I'm surprised Shulk didn't appear under the "more new characters" subheading. Also bring back Mewtwo please.

As for the character creation bit, it would be nice to create a characetr where you could assign any special attack to any B-button-and-direction.

  32. oyster18 Saturday 28th Jan 2012 at 15:44

Im just speaking my mind but i really think a Majoras mask Link would work really well. It could work the same as pokemon trainer, with small, but weak deku scrub link, Big strong, but slow goron link, and medium all round good zora link! I'm surprised it hasnt already been done to be honest. Aside from that i think just the standard more stages/characters, and improved online play is good. Dont overcomplicate things Nintendo!

  33. Amethyst Link Sunday 29th Jan 2012 at 08:46

What I would like to see is customisation. For those who don't want it, hear me out. I'll give a comprehensive example:
Adult Link (Wind Waker/Majora's Mask items have been added where appropriate)
Base Outfit/appearance: Original OoT, Updated OoT, TP with/without tunic, SS with/without tunic, OoT/TP Dark Links, Fierce Deity
Tunics: green, blue, red, purple, black, TP zora armour, TP magic armour, Fierce Deity armour
Sword: ordon sword, each different version of the goddess sword, master sword, Original OoT master sword, Dark Link's sword/SS anti master sword, Feirce Deity's sword, Biggoron sword, maybe MM swords (including Great Fairy's)
Sheild: every SS, TP, MM and OoT shield
    Boomerang: OoT, TP, WW
Bombs: OoT, all TP bombs, SS, WW
Hookshot: OoT hookshot/longshot, TP clawshot, SS clawshot, MM hookshot, WW hookshot
Bow: SS bows, OoT bow, MM bow
    Arrows: Normal, ice, fire, light

They could make it where you start off with some of these and then unlock the rest by doing various things, and maybe give some of them special attributes. This would probably make Link the most customisable character by far though, so there may turn out to be an imbalance in the amount of customisation per character but I'd still love to see it!

If that happened, I'd get a copy of the new smash bros. game for sure. I mean, it may be silly but, one of the reasons why I've not been entirely certain whether I would get it is that it seemed likely that the Link and Zelda for it would be specifically from Skyward sword, the most recent Zelda game, as opposed to Twilight Princess. It would seem like something more interesting to unlock than just a trophy that you can view info about.

Perhaps with the pokemon trainer, you could choose to be the trainer from each of the different generations of pokemon, each with their own trio of pokemon from the appriopriate generation. Or you could curstomize that team, where you could choose what pokemon you bring, it could be that you have to choose a small light, a medium, and a large heavy.

I doubt they'd allow customization to the extent of being allowed all of the shields from over the series, considering that's 10 from Skyward sword alone. Unless they only allowed Skyward sword Link.
I wonder how choosing different arrows, shields and maybe some of the other stuff, would affect gameplay... Hm, it could even be that you choose the set of items you bring, kinda like the pouch from Skyward sword.

Heh, thinking about the bombs from Twilight Princess makes me wonder if there's the possibility of underwater stages...

I know, right? If they did simply use Link and Zelda from Skyward Sword then there would be no boomerang! And would Zelda have the same moveset as always despite the fact that she shows no real magic in SS, and could they still use Sheik as her down-b? I did wonder about the volume of items, but I do like the idea of using the water-bombs (or bomb-chus, anyone?) and different arrows! Part of the whole customisation thing was that I wanted Dark Link and Fierce Deity to get the love they deserve.

I didn't think of it before, but your idea of having different Pokemon trainers sounds pretty good!
We definitely need Mewtwo back though, and maybe Roy with a tweaked moveset, or allow Marth and Ike to equip different swords from across the whole Fire Emblem series (the swords could have different properties) while keeping their movesets the same? There are so many possibilities! xD

It's such fun coming up with ideas about the possibilities (glad you liked my idea), different arrows definitely sounds good! It may even be possible that getting new items/equipment could be part of the storyline...kind of like how unlocking many characters was on brawl. Maybe, it could be that different sets of equipment could open up slightly different ways of getting through the areas, or to areas with extras in the story mode... (like an ice barrier over a route or something)

It'd be great how much more interesting brawls, particularly multiplayer ones, would be with customization that would make you distinct from the next person who shares your character preference.

I've often found myself thinking about the kind of stuff that could have been in particular video games and wonder why they weren't included, and you've come up with some great ideas that I never even imagined when I thought of customisation =D It could help people be a little more adventurous and get them to use characters that they wouldn't normally, and maybe address the issue of 'tiers'. We should get ourselves into the industry so we can get these awesome ideas into actual games! I really want to see all these things in there now and will be somewhat disappointed if they're not xD

  38. MikeIt0rNot69 Tuesday 31st Jan 2012 at 03:09

As for me everything sounds great but one thing i want is a little more action in the environment. Have more obstacles and moving objects and for fun some bad guys from the particular stage like koopas in a Mario themed stage. There can be more things added to tense up the game instead of fighting in a boring stage.

  39. RTY1998 Tuesday 31st Jan 2012 at 10:36

I would like a better level editor, being able to customize the characters outfits and weapons and being able to unlock alternitive attacks.

  40. Starman64O Tuesday 31st Jan 2012 at 17:47

I think you could get away with thrid party characters. If I could choose any, It'd be Sonic and Snake returning, maybe another Sonic character, like Tails (only to punch him in the face). Definitly Ammy from okami, or Chibiterasu, either or. Shulk from Xenoblade please, think about it, he could use his arts like Back Slash and Shadow Eye as Special Moves, his final smash could either be a Chain Attack, or maybe he activates his Monado and his Special Moves turn into powerful attacks. other Xenoblade Characters like Riki could be in Assist Trophies, which I also want to return. other third parties could be good, especially Mega man.
As for Nintendo Characters, I want less clones (WOLF BEGONE, he's just a heavy falco), less rubbish Characters, like Diddy. Characters like Layton and Luke as An Ice Climber-ish Double team would be great. A new Pokémon character, Lucario may sadly be leaving for someone like Sawk or Bisharp, or maybe a Pokémon trainer with Gen 5.
Perhaps Maxwell from Scribblenauts? He could use random weapons like Peach's weapon swing, and maybe a final smash could be like Pit's and Dedede's, a swarm of randomness! GHIRAHIM TOO! Or slippy, to kick.
Also, I want more costume variations, I remember Wario had tow types of costume, so why not others? Ganondorf could have a Demise design, Zelda could have a toon style, Maxwell (if included) could be loads of different avatars, such as Doppelganger, Hero, Chef, etc. Shulk could have differnt types of armour, and more! Pokemon trainer has diffent costumes, such as the one from Silver and Gold, or stuff.

    Nintendo, JUST GET STARTED!

Much as I'd like to see the Level 5 characters in there, I wouldn't put them in, just like I wouldn't have put in Non-Nintendo characters in Brawl.
Wart would be interesting, but he's not very mobile. Heck, Bowser would be faster.
Not so sure about the Miis fighting though.
Vaati would be interesting. Or a Ganondorf who actually uses his sword for once >.>
And I'd love to see Issac from Golden Sun in there. Just uh... not with ALL his Psynergy XD
You know who would really work well? SA-X. She'd look almost exactly like Samus, but with that funny green face inside her visor. And her Final Smash could be turning into her X form and firing a barrage of homing ice missiles =P
Giving Samus the PED device might spice things up too

...not so sure about Steel Diver XD
The one place I think would be a great stage would be Dark Aether. The stage could be broken up by Lightbringers (who just like in MP2: Echoes would walk about the stage), whereby if you stray from their field, you would take minor damage, and random Ing would occassionally attack, making it more vital not to stray from the fields. Like the random Zelda monsters who appear (usually from crates), the Ing would be destroyable though.
I like the idea of using Super Mario 3D Land =D

If they used Wii games for unlocking characters too then that would be amusing, especially as there'd be an endless number of characters to use.

Playing as extra characters only if you own their respective game is an awful idea. If it's not already included on the disk from the get go then keep it out!I don't really get the fuss over peoples need for extra content or DLC. Brawl was fit to burst on Wii with no extra content can you just imagine how they will fill that 20-odd GB disc!?

If extra content is genuinely new and not on the disc then that's fine but lets not make this another Bioshock conjob eh?

I want to play as Amaretsu, Mewtwo and Banjo-Kazooie!

Definitely! Love banjo - kazooie except it's probably not gonna happen hehe. Amaterasu is good aswell, and mewtwo was much better than ugly lucario.
