Nintendo has announced that a new Mario 3DS game will be released during the next financial year.
After mixing 2D and 3D with Super Mario 3D Land, Satoru Iwata confirmed that Nintendo will be returning to its roots as the new Mario 3DS game will be a 2D side-scrolling game.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told investors: "Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year."
Amazing news! What do you think? Are you pleased that the new Mario game will be a 2D platformer or would you have preferred Super Mario 3D Land 2? Let us know by commenting below.
Do you think "totally new" means this won't be another New Super Mario Bros game?... I'd like to see something new but either way i'm looking forward to this.
I am really looking foward to this. As good as 3D Land was it doesn't compare to the greatness of Super Mario Bros. 3 or the New Super Mario Bros. games, so I'm excited about this one.
I'd have preferred a sequel to 3D Land to be honest. The thought of another New Super Mario Bros game really doesn't do it for me, 2D Mario platform games have been done to death, and they don't add anything new to the series either.
2D platform games are really quite boring now, especially if you've played as many in the past as I have.
Gotta say that I'd have preferred to hear of a 3D Land 2, as the first one was just so fresh, compared to the repetitiveness of the 2d games. If they can spruce it up with some new ideas, I'll be game though.

It would only be worth getting if they added a level editor to the game, so you can create your own levels and upload them for others to experience and rate.
I'm not bothered either way, with Nintendo's track record it's likely to be awesome regardless. All I know is that in my experience new Mario means more money.
It isn't a surprised Nintendo bringing out another Mario title after Nintendo was announce to loose a lot of money. So when in money trouble bring a Mario game out.
I just hope it isn't another New Super Mario Bros game,I'd rather have a 3D Land sequel to be honest.
Oh my. This all seems so sudden. Don't tell me that Mario is going the way of Sonic and knocking out a new one each year. Still I for one and happy that its not a direct sequal to 3D Land. I like to think that Nintendo do a better job of mixing things up for its fans rather than churning out sequals with a only few extras in one after the other. The only problem I have is that New Super Mario Bros. on the DS and Wii reignited the Mario 2D Platformer after about 10 years, so it felt really fresh and new. I can't see a new 2D Mario having the same effect and I really don't know what exciting things Nintendo can bring to the table. Then again those guys in Kyoto are full of surprises.

That would be awesome, creating near-impossible levels and then mastering them. Sounds cool.
I certainly was not expecting a new Mario 3DS game to be announced so soon after 3D land but i don't think we should worry as i don't think Super Mario 3D Land took very long to develop, if it had been in development at E3 2010 Nintendo would have shown it so the new Mario 3DS game should be another top Mario adventure. I am not suprised that Nintendo are going back to Mario's 2D roots with the next 3DS game as New Super Mario Bros was one of the best selling games on the system and is still shifting copies today, well over 5 years since its initial release.
So I am delighted to hear about this! I also expect it'll launch by christmas with the way things are for Nintendo.
As for the game, I would prefer it to be a back to basics 2D platformer. Yes, graphics are nice, but please, make it look like Super Mario Bros 3. That game was the perfect mario experience. Obviously, keep the fireflower. Put the Tankuki suit in, and bring back old classics (frog suit)! And put more power ups in this time, make it so that each world has its own specific power up, and make it so that in later levels there are exits that require certain power ups from the earlier ones (and vice versa) giving us more of an incentive to go back.
MARIO in 2D a year after a MARIO in 3D. I never got SUPER MARIO 3DLAND owing to the fact I haven't played any proper MARIO games in a long time. I'd much rather have a SUPER MARIO 64 sequel, since that was the game I like the most . However, I might be inclined to buy this.
I would have much preferred 3D Land 2, thought it was a great game and with a bit of work and improvement on the sequel could have been amazing! However, i'm sure this will still be a good game and I'll definetly buy it!
That's good news.Mind you,a new mario game being announced is always good news. What woud be cool is if this 2D side scroller is something similar to Mario and Luigi:Bowser's inside story.
I hope that just because this is going to be a 2D game, they are still going to include 3D bits like cut-scenes and Sonic Generations style camera sweeps (Classic Sonic, console version). Mario jumping out towards the screen doing his iconic "peace" hand gesture, Super Mario World style wouldn't go down to badly either. One last thing: I think some more varied gameplay elements need to be included as well, in order to not seem too similar to the New Super Mario Bros. games, such as mine cart driving (or is that too cliche?) or maybe a snowy level that starts with Mario inside a big snowball rolling down a hill, needing the player to jump over rocks and chasms...for example...
"Are you pleased that the new Mario game will be a 2D platformer or would you have preferred Super Mario 3D Land 2?" I don't particularly want either >_> Nah, a new side-scrolling Mario game is still good news, but I definitely don't want a Super Mario 3D Land 2. Next time, I want a true 3D Mario game, i.e. 64 Sunshine and Galaxies
I love the side scrolling Mario games, so I'm looking forward to it. I wouldn't mind if it was called New Super Mario Bros- doesn't mean it's going to be the same game.
Hopefully they'll bring back some old power ups (Shell Mario) and add in some of the new ones (Penguin).
obviously new super mario bros mii 3d really gotta change that name but ill be more excited than 3d land. 3d land was ok but i finished it 100% (not counting purple box star coins) too easy with raccoon suit
I think its a bit soon to announce a new Mario 3ds game. At least wait a few months before announcing it so everybody has a chance to get everything out of 3d land. Plus, if Nintendo keep on announcing new Mario games all the time, people will stop being so excited about it. Back in the day you had to wait about five years for a new 3d Mario game. If you think about how much more people were excited about skyward sword than 3d land then you should know what I mean.
Fantastic! I have always loved NSMB, but I'd like to see them add something new to it to make a New New Super Mario Bros. Ideas= Level Creator Waluigi/Wario Playable Peach generally doing more to help herself (her hitting the goombas with an umbrella in 3d land was a good start) New Items. I am in no way whatsoever creative when it comes to items, i leave that to the designers, (MK courses are my thing for designing) 12 worlds. 9 for Wii was good, but how about a world completely based on ghosts??? AR worlds. Use the mario card to put a few selected levels into reality, maing the real world the background time trials for worlds-see how fast you can do it and use street pass/ spot pass to send your data internet 4 player vs (and local-its so unfortunate that they didn't include any vs on 3d land DLC-New levels every week!
brilliant , cant wait for this, played all of the 2d mario games and completely disagree with people who say they are repetetive, but some people just like to have a go for some reason...

3DS is having a bit of a hard time at the moment...more Mario games = more people wanting a 3DS. Plus, it's not like all the Mario games they've announced are the same...the subtle differences make for a wider audience, varying from noobs who don't know what "It's-a me!" means to the veterans who nearly crapped themselves when Luigi's Mansion 2 was announced.
I prefer the 2D games, but this is going to be like the recent ones (I think) - Nintendo should move the series along rather than sing a 26-year-old song.
So. Peeved. Off. Right. Now. I just bought Super Mario 3D land because I thought that the 3DS wouldn't be seeing another proper 2D Mario game for a while and I wanted a Mario fix. Now, what I deem a proper Mario game is coming out and I'm broke. So. Angry.
I can remember before the 3DS was released, Nintendo confirmed A 2D and a 3D Mario game. I thought the development teams just became too close and they combined to give us 3D Land. I am not complaining I am just saying my thoughts.
And another thing. Instead of Mario going to save Peach (who miraculously disappears even when Mario is staring at her or holding her hand), maybe he has to save someone else, like when he had to save Daisy. OR Mario is doing something random with Peach like walking through Toad Town with her, when BOWSER shows up, in Mega form, and destroys some of the town (of course being a Mario Game, nobody was at home, instead they were all out that day at some random person's party (Mario wasn't invited)), snatching Peach at the same time for good measure. Mario runs off but before he does E-Gadd gives him a wondeful machine to rebuild the town. So Mario's aim for World 1 is to rebuild the town with this machine (by using it whenever he's near a building). When Mario get's to the final castle in World 1, (having had to rebuild some of the parts of the levels with his machine) he realises it's not Bowser's castle but a different castle, more like a palace. He runs to the end, like a normal level only to find Peach all safe. But Peach tells him that Bowser went and kidnapped the princess of this castle, a girl called Mona (who is like a goth and pretends she's not a princess at anytime possible). Mario runs through 11 more worlds in a fashion similar to NSMB but using his machine to rebuild parts of the levels (because Bowser has destroyed them in his path). When Mario saves Mona, Mona tells her story about how all the other girls at her infant school made fun of her for being a princess (she's like 17) so she's been in denial ever since. She says how life at the castle is boring and she really wants tobe like other girls. She was roaming the castle when Bowser found her. But then in an all Nintendo-cheesy way she says what she's going to do (she's gonna ask her mother for some time away from the castle so she can roam the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom (which she didn't get to see properly because she's either been stuck in a castle or dragged through them) with her new friends who apologised for being so mean at school. In other words I hope they include a proper story like Super Mario Galaxy as well as new innovative items, worlds and other ideas. HD will make it great too. If they use this story, Mona would become a worthy character to use in Mario Kart Wii U! So excietd for this game, but I think it takes about a 9 months to produce a proper Mario Game so we should be seeing it at Christmas with the Wii U!
Well Nintendo are caught once again between a rock and a hard place. They do a 3D game, it's a Mario 64 knock off. They do a 2D game, it should have been a sequel to the 3D game.
I'm pretty happy with a 2D Mario as I've never been a massive fan of the 3D kind (I don't rate Mario 64 at all - I'm sorry).
Plus, with all things retro being the flavour of the month with gamers, perhaps a trip back to the most popular 2D game (Super Mario World) may inspire some love from the fanbase?
