Super Mario DLC possible through Nintendo Network - Iwata

Nintendo look at lengthening the life of their games

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is considering Super Mario DLC as a means to lengthen the life of the game.

Last week Nintendo announced that the new Nintendo Network service will be used to distribute downloadable content and it seems that Iwata is already thinking about DLC for Super Mario.

The idea would be not only to increase the lifespan of a game but also to keep people talking about it long after the release date.

Iwata said: "The idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages... This will not only give us new profits but will lengthen the life of a product, in that it will never be out of fashion and can keep attracting public attention as long as many people play it.

What do you think of this idea? How much would you be prepared to pay for extra Super Mario levels?

As long as it doesn't mean they're going to deliberately make the initial games shorter - and thus, make extra stages even more of a necessity for lengthening the game - then I'm all for it.

I think they should release new world not just levels and the worlds would cost somewhere between £2-£3

^ agreed, new worlds would be great...anyway, more super mario 3d land goodness = :D

While you're at it Ninty, how about dlc for:

MK7-more unlockables for karts, characters, tracks...
Pilot Wings-new locations, extra missions, new vehicles perhaps
    Steel Diver-more missions, subs, modes

    At a reasonable cost please

Perfect, get on it Nintendo. Create your games as you would usually but just implement the means to add additional content at a later date.

I would pay £1-4. I think that they should make additional worlds and not levels

Yes, I like this idea, if Nintendo Network works for people in the UK.

There is a big distinction between good DLC and bad DLC.

Good DLC is completed after the rest of the game was finished and distributed for a fair price, or even for free. This is essentially like an "expansion pack". This is unfortunately quite rare.

Bad DLC is something that was fully completed prior to a game's release and intentionally held back from the player, sometimes still on the game itself, just locked. Previously, this was bonus content. Now you have to pay. This, unfortunately, is worryingly common, and I personally will chose not to buy games that have this type of DLC at all (which is why I never bought Megaman 9 or 10, or Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, for example).

Nintendo has to be VERY careful with this idea. Done right, this could be amazing. Done wrong, and I might end up not buying their games any more.

I would love some 3D Land DLC! I especially want some more beach stages. The combination of the great level design and the amazing music just makes it really fun to play.

Look guys sorry, I have an Xbox and I do buy add ons frequently. However we arent going to get new worlds for £4. Links Awakening is a fiver. On xbox we get 5 call of duty maps for a tenner. Thats £2 a map. And these maps are often the best designed, and better than all of them on the disk. In a super mario 3d land we get 8 levels a world. Nintendo could say £16....... But they wont.
