Wii U wish list: 3. Super Mario Wii U

9 ideas for a Super Mario Wii U game

So last week we discussed what we'd like from the forthcoming Super Mario 3DS game But don't forget about Wii U. Reggie Fils-Aime has already said that Wii U will have great launch games and it would be fantastic if the line-up included a new Mario game for the first time since N64.

Would it be a Mario Galaxy-style 3D game or a 2D Mario game. Well, the 2D Mario games do actually shift more copies than the 3D games and the first Mario game shown off for Wii U was a prototype called New Super Mario Bros Mii. Still, it's not always easy to predict what Mario will do next (having said that, he'll probably be rescuing Peach) but saying it's a 2D adventure, this is what Phillip Lickley would like to see. It's basically New Super Mario World with some added extras

The reason why a 2D Mario game should be more like Super Mario World than Super Mario Bros 3 is down to one thing. The map. When did we last have a world map in a Mario game that really truly excited you? The explorable hub of Mario Galaxy? No, it didn't really feature anything exciting to find and just slowed you down between worlds. The hidden paths of New Super Mario Bros? No, there weren't that many. The bright and colourful Super Mario 3D Land map screen? No, too linear...

It just has to be the world map from Super Mario World. Expanding on the great map from Mario Bros 3, this one had it all: multiple pathways, secret exits out of levels to bonus levels that often weren't ridiculously signposted and could lead you to whole batches of levels. And then, of course, the exit excitement of Star Road and the eight rock-solid levels that followed.

Never since has there been a map that has opened up possibilities for so much exploration, so many bonus levels, so many smiles. I want to find secret levels and worlds by flying up holes in roofs. I want paths that don't lead anywhere. I want random levels like 'Top Secret'.

Look what they could achieve in 1992... Imagine what they could do twenty years later?

2.Bowser is not the only super villain

We've rescued Peach from Bowser countless times now so let's shake things up a bit. Let's get back an old villain. What about Tatanga from Super Mario Land? Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2? Wario from Super Mario Land 2? Maybe get Waluigi out of the sports centre and into a proper platformer for once? Perhaps a baddie we have yet to see?

Maybe Nintendo could take a leaf out of Marvel's book and deliver us the Mushroom Kingdom version of the Avengers with an army of Mario characters taking on an army of Mario baddies. Like Smash Bros in platform form?

Id like to see the return of a classic two player mode where you take turns doing levels

Totally agree with the map and the Switch Palaces. Definitely my favourite features of Super Mario World.

One new inclusion I'd like to see is the Wii U controller being used by player two. That way, during multiplayer games P1 can focus on the TV, while P2 can focus on the controller screen - then the two can play simultaneonsly without being confined to one screen having to stretch to maintain the action of two characters.

Another, more outlandish idea, could be a bonus unlockable game after beating the main game: "Super Wario Bros.", a short albiet extremely hard version of the main game complete with its own title screen where you play as Wario and Waluigi with a new set of physics and powers with a mental sense of humour. Just to add something different instead of the standard Special World (or "World S" if you prefer).

Maybe get Waluigi out of the sports centre and into a proper platformer for once? YES, THIS IS MY ONLY CHOICE THAT NEEEEEEEDS TO HAPPEN! liking the baby yoshi startegy idea though, sounds cool!

A Mario game with a well thought out story would be nice. The original Paper Mario on the N64 is probably my favourite Mario game, as it had a really good story, interaction with characters, as well as character development. If Nintendo can do this with their new Mario Wii U title, I'll be a happy man.

Quoting one of my previous comments: 'To make this or any side-scroller Mario spectacular, the secrets need to be plentiful such as in Super Mario World which had Yoshi coins, lots of secret exits in levels, the coloured block switches and a hidden star and special world. No other side-scroller Mario has used this many secrets since then. Also, it needs a lot of power ups possibly to the amount that Mario 3 had. This new game also needs a good level design with a good challenge and not too easy like most games. If anyone has played the e-reader levels from Mario Advance 4, thats the sort of challenge I'm looking for. One more thing, I would like to see a return of forgotten enimies such as the Chargin' Chuck and Sumo Brothers (those things that stomp to drop fire). These points would make the next Mario perfect.' Bringing flying back as well will be an awesome addition. Yoshi would be nice as well but it isn't essential to me and as for the bad guy, Wario would be good but a big no to Wart and Waluigi.

    SM3DL is DISGUSTINGLY easy!!!
Why don't they have the next Mario game where it goes at the start:

Have you played a 3D Mario game before?

    1. Not at all
    2. Yes, a fair amount
    3. I have 100%d at least one of the Galaxy games.

    Then if you pick...

    1. You get Super Hint after 10 deaths, Fail Suit after 15 deaths, 10 lives when you game over, easier levels
    2. Easier levels and Super Hint only if you die 20 times
    3. Hard levels and Skills Movies

Hmm, I dunno... the last time someone named Phillip had input on a Mario game, we got Hotel Mario...

    ...just kidding. :P

Seriously, I like these ideas, the map especially. The New SMB Wii map was pretty good at hiding some stuff away, though not in the same way. And I just like the whole seamless feel of World's map.

I do wonder about flying, though, since that might negatively impact the 4-player aspect we've seen so far.

Definitely agree on the villains thing. I like Bowser and all, but we need more variety. Link gets to do different things, and they don't even always involve Zelda-- why does Mario have to look to a separate genre these days in order to do something different?

As much as I loved Bowser in Galaxy, I would not have argued one whit had Tatanga been involved in some capacity... or just replaced the Koopa King entirely.

Regarding difficulty, New SMB Wii seemed sufficiently challenging... it's probably the only 2D Mario I've yet to fully master, at that (though part of it is that I just have less time now).

Goomba's Shoe (c'mon, "Official" NIntendo Magazine, get it right. ;P ), the vehicles, and everything else sound great. For Yoshis, I'd even be happy if they just brought back colors that weren't so pastel... how about red? That's my color of choice.

Lot's of Yoshi, bring back the Chimp.

I've said this before but I think in the next Mario game, you should be able to play as Bowser and Donkey Kong in a villian mode similar to "Lego Batman:The videogame". Of course,as well as the villian mode, there should be a normal mode where you play as Mario and Luigi but when your playing as Bowser and Donkey Kong, you get their view of the story. The boss levels could be Donkey Kong-style. When your playing as Mario and/or Luigi, you dodge the barrels. When playing as Bowser and/or Donkey Kong, you're throwing them at Mario and Luigi.

You know in Super Mario Bros 3 There was those mini game places. It would be kinda fun to add those as well to get some items or 1 ups

professor E.Gadd needs to get busy and invent a super gizmo or gadget that can change purposes. like something called the M.O.T.O.M. the multifunctional optional transforming octopus machine. it can turn into something that flies, swims underwater and on the surface. something like this and can change purposes
