Many people use video games as a form of escapism. For some that could be shooting bad guys in Call of Duty, others like to battle with monsters in Pokemon (I had to mention Pokemon once!), but for me there's nothing like a good fighting game if you need to let off a bit of steam.
Now I'm not talking about Super Smash Bros, because that is simply in a league of its own. I'm talking about good old-fashioned arcade-style fighting games with ridiculous combos. Here are three of my favourites on Nintendo platforms.
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom (Wii)

Take the 2D meets 3D graphics of Street Fighter IV, the play style of Marvel Vs Capcom games, add in some Tatsunoko characters, and there you have a recipe for a really tasty fighting game.
Fans of original voice acting would be pleased to learn that the characters have Japanese vocals so there is no crazy lip-sync issues.
You can pick from a selection of 25 characters (13 Capcom, 12 Tatsunoko) to fight with and you choose a team of two characters to use as a tag team. The better you perform in the Story mode, the more money you obtain to unlock such things new fighters, costumes, and illustrations that you can view in the gallery.
I was fortunate enough to pick the game up with the fightstick fairly cheaply last year. The visuals are great and it still feels fresh and different while maintaining that classic 2D style. A must have for Wii owners.
Super Street Fighter IV (Nintendo 3DS)

The game was ported onto 3DS in time for the console's launch in March last year. Unlike the home console versions it is in stunning 3D and offers a really addictive StreetPass mode.
While the gameplay and visuals are very much the same as the console version, the touch screen provides four different buttons which you can press to execute powerful moves without having to learn complicated button combinations. Great for new players and button bashers like myself!
Street Fighter is undoubtedly one, if not the most recognisable and popular fighting series in gaming history. With its portable console success it has paved the way for other big fighting 3DS releases such as Dead or Alive Dimensions, Blazblue, and next month sees the release of Tekken 3D Prime Edition.
Soul Calibur 2 (GameCube)

Super Street Fighter IV 3D is epic. But yeah..!
xD
"Mario Bennett choses her top three" - oh dear...
Nice choices, even if there's not been many on Ninty consoles recently.
Also, the SSFIV section's all in the blue-header format, might want to change that:)
>no Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +
goddamnit onm
was street fighter iv voted the best fighting game of 2011?, no it wasnt mortal kombat 9 was and yet no mention of any mortal kombat game whatsoever. seriously anyone who has never played a mortal kombat game is missing out on the BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER
No Killer Instinct Marti?! I'm out.
*runs away*
good choices i love SC2 and TVC
Rayman Origins for me...can't beat a good slap around with Rayman and crew
ultimate marvel vs capcom beats takusunoku vs capcom not a question
can any1 tell me wich soul cailbur game is the best of the series ?
sorry im aint good at english
Good call on Soul Calibur II
I still enjoy playing that game.
i know its kind of different to 'proper' fighting games, but surely super smash bros should be mentioned?
whatever, tatsunoko v capcom is ace, as is street fighter four and soulcalibur 2 (lets be honest, the series went downhill after link decided to leave)
Not really a huge fighting game fan, but Soul Calibur 2 and SSBM ate up tons of my time on the gamecube. I used to play Last Blade 2 a lot in a local arcade when I was younger, though I liked it for its music and characters more than the gameplay.
SuperStreet Fighter 3DS is awful, I wouldn't call it a fighting game and a much as a jump around like you have a poo on a stick. Dead Or Alive is so much better,I can hit people on that one. DOA was done well, great use of 3D and an exciting story that's not too difficult to follow.
Same! My cousin from Tenerife slept over last weekend and we spent hours playing Soul Calibur II. I loved Link's appearance in it and Soul Calibur in general is interesting because of its use of weapons.
super smash bros series
i tend to think of Smash Bros. as a party game rather than a fighting game tbh
For people that didnt read the second paragraph, and just skipped to the games:
'Now I'm not talking about Super Smash Bros, because that is simply in a league of its own. I'm talking about good old-fashioned arcade-style fighting games with ridiculous combos.'
Yeah I would kind of have to agree with you on that one.
oops. sorry.
