The Metal Gear Solid 3D demo has arrived on the 3DS eShop. However, despite the game having a BBFC 15 rating, the demo has a PEGI 18 rating slapped on it.

Metal Gear Solid 3D isn't the only big download in the 3DS eShop today. You can also get hold of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

This is great news! There's nothing I want more than for the 3DS to be perceived in a more adult light than the DS, putting an end to the DS/PSP or kids/adults handheld argument for this generation. With the PSVita's ridiculous asking price I think the 3DS could become a viable option for more mature gamers looking to continue handheld gaming!
3ds cost more than vita on launch
I REALLY hope its 15 when its out cos then all I need to do is bring a passport not a parent
No it didn't. I got the 3DS for £190 on launch. The Vita is £230 (which in the worst case scenario is equal to the 3DS).
Instant download. Can't wait for this although I'm kinda worried it won't sell to great.... I think it would of made sense to release this before the HD collection, since its on there. I'm still getting this despite owning the HD collection. Portable snake is win win.
Btw vita is £230 for wifi only and £280 for the 3g/wifi model. 3DS was only 190-200 when it came out.
3G-less vita costs £210 from decent places, and average launch price for 3DS was £230 iirc so. i remember seeing it for £200ish, but not a lot
Vita is more expensive on the whole, but for base unit it seems to me that 3DS was more expensive
I didn't mean to cause an argument over price, the 3DS was way too much at launch as well, but the fact is it's around £230 for the BASE model of the PSVita, without an SD card, without any in built games, without any free downloads. I personally think you got a lot more for your money with the 3DS on day one, and now the price has come down it's even better. Sony are notorious for not budging on pricing, so I don't expect the PSVita to be going below £200 for a long time.
okay so i just looked up around game/gamestation/other high street pricks, and welp
Crud! I forgot about the demo! I just this second downloaded it. I'll give it a spin after I've finished the ironing.
Here's an idea. Instead of talking about price comparisons between the 3DS and Vita, how about we talk about this game, shall we?
The Vita is more expensive but only because it's more advanced. The 3DS was launched expensive then had a price cut, if the Vita hardly sells like it has in Japan then it'll probably get a price cut too. Most places are doing decent bundles which includes a game and a memory card. Also it has free downloadable AR Games. I Love my 3DS and I will Love the Vita when it comes out. I don't think the price is unreasonable compared to the pricing of most technology today.
How long is it available for download? As I'm stuck with just 3G at the time being
how this can be an 18 and resi revelations a 16 is beyond anyone.
bbfc and pegi disagree on everything. it will be a 15 here, i've seen the box.
but ambiquity helps no one... personally, i'd call it a sixteen, the whole game being a bit too violent to make it a 15... (well, i wouldnt say that, but everyone else would)
goodness knows why, maybe with the bbfc being british, we know our children aren't influenced by videogames that much (and how would this damage kids anyway?)
for the demo, i dont like the controls having played the game on hd collection, but at least it lets you move while aiming (unlike the original and the hd version). it seems to have a similar scheme to peace walker on the psp, but better. i could see the circle pad pro being useful with this. not buying it, have the hd collection, but intriguing to play. the framerate is also a little choppy, and the menus arent as intuitive as previous versions. also, aiming is less precise, which used to be a real feature of the game, trying to tranquilize someone with a handgun from 400 metres away...
all being said however, its one of the best games ever made, with an intriguing plot and really tense gameplay. best stealth game ever made, because of its setting, gameplay, and man, the bosses are better than any you will ever play anywhere else... just wait until you get to sokrovenno... prepare to spend a while there...
The demo is pretty tasty
Proper loved the bridge section. Just to point out. If anyone has the circle pad plus, and doesn't want to use those horrid face button second analog configuration, you can activate to circle pad via the options once the game demo has started.
A definite yes for me, though I can see how the circle pad could help with the camera controls...And with my birthday coming up in March, this will be tooo goood.
Oh, for duck's sake...
Yet another MGS3 news story that utters total bull and gets even stupider responses. The game won't be an 18 - It's a port of the PS2 version which was a 15. It's only rated 18 on trailers and demos for guidance.
Admittedly, the game could be an 18 because of the infamous torture scene which is genuinely quite upsetting and brutal, but if this game hasn't changed from the PS2 version it definitely will not be an 18.
What annoys me the most is how people think this is a mature adulterated game. Truth be told, it packs just as much charm as Nintendo's greats, yet the majority of the forum as well as Tom East (who are clearly beyond unfamiliar with MGS) seem to keep making it look like 'just another 3DS game'. This is the equivalent of OoT3D, folks, you really need to be taking it for granted.
Tom should be banned from writing about MGS, honest to god.
Don't worry mate, it is a 15. Don't pay any attention to what Mr. East says in regards to MGS.
The 3D is terrible. The controls without the Circle Pad Pro are terrible. The framerate is terrible and it doesn't look that good (although, doesn't the final build supposedly look much better?).
On the plus side, the gameplay is awesome. I wasn't that bowled over after my first try but after playing through it again, I'm totally onboard. This'll be my first MGS game when I eventually get it. Just got to decide which combination of this, Rhythm Thief, Heroes of Ruin and Kid Icarus I should get.
This demo is great. there are so many ways to finish it, go under, go on the roof etc. cant wait for its release.
Going to give this a download later and see what it's like. It sounds promising without a demo, so if anyone's on the fence about buying it then this will be a good way to try and tip them in the right direction!
Also found it funny that there were 18 comments as of the time I started writing this xD
s**tE! IT'S TODAY! WOOP WOOP
it should get a 15 rating as the bbfc is probably the biggest rating system in britain
MGS3 is a much better game than OoT though
"The Metal Gear Solid 3D demo has arrived on the 3DS eShop. However, despite the game having a BBFC 15 rating, the demo has a PEGI 18 rating slapped on it."
I think you actually need to read the article before jumping to conclusions like that.
the game itself it a 15, you baka. nobody cares about PEGI anyway
This is one of my favourite games of all time! I like the control scheme so far as its similar to peacewalker on the psp. I agree with the person who said this should've come out before the mgs hd collection. However I prefer playing Mgs on the 3ds because it looks gorgeous & it feels more immersive in 3D
Oh & i think it should be an 18 because there are some graphic wounds in the game.
More or less. Vita still costs slightly more and 3g version costs even more!
Didn't really like the demo, is it just me or does it look absolutely awful? and the control scheme really doesn't work - CPP though makes it much better!! Still not sure whether I'll pick this up, probably less likely too now...
fine, there is a reasonable amount of blood, but judging by what resi revelations got, its no worse than that. there is some weird stuff in this game granted... but its not actually that violent, and you can tell by the series tagline 'tactical espionage action', and stealth comes first... there is also aversion to killing people, with alerts, etc, and even boss fights (you know the one), and even time paradoxes occasionally. and anyways, the bbfc likes to be lenient with games compared to movies, with things such as the orange box getting a bbfc 15, in contrast to its pegi. i think the bbfc mostly care about other characteristics over violence in its highest ratings...
i just looked up at the bbfc website, and they played through each section of the game (whoever had that job had a good day i'm guessing) and give it a fifteen. also, looking at their classification of mgs peace walker, which also gets a fifteen, also discusses scenes of torture, yet accepts that its unrealistic and such, and it still gets it.
i believe pegi have been touchy since modern warfare 2, with the famous airport level. before that, every fps was a 16 or even a 12, including the first modern warfare. now, most are 18s.
and anyway, most fifteen movies are worse than this...
Thank Chaz. I was about to write the same thing myself.
I know what you mean by that
Pythons are so delicious.
I found myself getting shot an awful lot in the demo
This is the first of a demo coming out before the game. I just wish some more (Insert rude swear for name as a plural) would release a lot more demos, because it's getting a lot more annoying that we can't get more than one demo for every update. I'm also a bit p**sed by the amount of blocks because they have an affect on my 3ds camera time.
No worries, I just don't like people getting the rap for things they didn't do. :)
i didnt realy enjoy it all that much if im honest, its put me off getting the game more than anything.
Darn, I thought the demo was unlimited. Oh well look at the bright side we finally get to see what the game is like
IT'S AWESOME!
Quite enjoyable demo, frame rate was a bit iffy and the camera controls were hard without the Circle Pad Pro.
I'm estimating that this game will get 93%. I've played through the demo quite a few times now and it's definetely the longest demo and the most replayable in my opinion. For instance, there was a hidden Sniper rifle.
Also, did anyone else notice the same 18 rating on Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D as I bought it and it was a 15 but then on eshop Pegi had it down for an 18.
i was going to buy this game, but now i have played the demo its completely but me off, its got the most terrible controls, the camera angles are a joke, the graphics are dated, over all very poor, if it wasnt metal gear solid there wouldnt be any hype
just buy the ps2 version or hd collection
after playing it 3 times for 5 hours, obviously just by that i love it. cant wait till its release in march! (well maybe i can)
but now i want it even more than i did when i 1st herd it was releasing on 3ds.
Yeah, I found myself operating the camera poorly in the alert phase. I can't concentrate on, well, not getting shot up because of the camera sometimes. I also find it annoying how, if you peek out from behind an object, you become camo index zips to 00%, no matter how hidden you are. I apologize for failing to point out any negative parts in my previous post.
Played this lying in bed last night.
Try to walk across a bridge
GYRO CONTROLS!
Fall off and die.
... Was not expecting that.
A symbol pops up on screen before you cross to tell you to be prepared to use gyro controls. A death I didn't expect however was sinking into the bog. Didn't go down well with me.
Same here with the bog. The bridge and camera control was a bit iffy for me, and I got spotted at the factory. Nearly died on the demo. I know I can do better than that! (first time playing MGS)
i first played this with the hd collection on the ps3... and i absolutely adore it. and now i still have sons of liberty, and peace walker to play and i am so happy. this is also one of the weaker bits of the game - just getting everything started - get this and i bet you'll play it five times to do everything in a slightly different way.
you wont be dissapointed... i thought it was quite short, but then realised i had been playing it way too long.
Pretty much what I had to say. The only other problem I had with the demo was that I had very little idea as to what to do with the various options. I worked a few things out for myself eventually (like how come when I picked up an item/weapon it wasn't in my item/weapon menu), but it would have been nice to have a manual which I'm sure the full version will have in some form.
And I know I said "the only other problem", but I also thought it ended rather abuptly. Overall, I thought the Resident Evil demo better demonstrated what the game is like, whereas the Snake Eater demo seemingly chucks you in at the deep-end.
Probably? It's the only ratings system in Britain.
My older brother downloaded this, but couldn't enjoy it because he can't control the camera. We don't have the extra circle pad!
I'm sure this game would be a lot easier with the Circle Pad Pro; it might even be reason enough to get one! The graphics and 3D effect are definitely some of the best I've seen on the 3DS so far. Although, with more games like MGS3 3D and RE:R that incorporate Circle Pad Pro controls, will we see a 3DSi/Lite/SP with dual circle pads sometime soon?
That's because Sony watch and copy Nintendo like crazy... The 3DS price was actually pretty accurate, seeing as it's next generation and more powerful than Wii. It also costs more to produce than Wii does... Plus, businesses would fail if the £30 profit weren't added on top for retailers, it's how everything works - not just 3DS. Problem being, it seems possibly you and others still see the 3DS as previous generation, when in reality it seriously is next generation - it can run XBOX 360 games, albeit not in HD with some pixelation and texture issues but even so, it's powerful enough to run them without crashing or failing even with graphical errors.
After a couple of playthroughs of the demo I have concluded
a) I will definitely be getting this game
b) Pegi age ratings are distributed completely randomly. There is nothing in the demo to rate it higher than a 15 or at least if there is then several other games that are out there are currently doing irrevocable harm to the nation's 15-year-olds.
I played the demo and although I liked the original metal gear solid this one feels very clunky to play and it almost puts me off the game.
I can understand why it's aimed at adult audiences mostly but I think an 18 is going a bit too far. Now I can't get it for a few years (I'm under 15)!
Want this game so badly !!!!!
I like how the user above me copies numberish fellow's antics. Username wise.
I want this game quite badly too. Oh, welcome to the forums by the way
Awful!Might be personal game taste but I found the controls awkward and it was explained badly! I couldnt hide from the enemy and they just keep shouting me! The most fun I had playing it was when I dropped myself off the side of the bridge!
Hm. The annoying thing is..I am Eleven. x'D Not old enough to get it.. =[
i wouldnt recomend this for 11 year olds... it is slightly too bloody, and quite violent. it would never get a 12, if you know what i mean. wait a bit man, because they are all violent and bloody, and i wouldnt want a year 6 playing them really... all being said, its a really good game, but there are others as well. what i liked to do. at my age you can discover loads of games like metal gear, and appreciate them more then. because some games like metal gear have very convoluted plots and gameplay features at the very least, and its hard to understand them, even as you get older, and very complicated at year six/seven english level...
IT'S AWESOME! but i won't be buying the game next month and i want Kid Icarus: Uprising gonna buy it next month.
Eventually, I think over time you will get used to the controls, as by the number of times I've played this demo I've gotten used to the control scheme over time. And also while the camo is explained good enough everything else...no.
I found the controls took a while to get used to. Even with the circle pad pro (which I think you need to play this to have any chance of not being spotted!)
I've never played the game before and was really impressed with the ambient sound effects and the 3D was amazing.
That bit on the bridge however was just nonsense! I know an old rope bridge isn't the most stable of things but it's like Snake was walking on butter. It was hilarious the way he just slid off the side at the slightest tilt of the 3DS. I was playing it in bed lying down and it was quite tricky.
I'm going to play it a few more times though before I decide whether to buy it or not. I really like the Demos. Good move Nintendo!
Big T
I didn't want to p**s off all the silly Nintendo fanboys.
I do not think you have to be a silly Nintendo fanboy to think OoT > MGS3. I've only played the demo but I prefer OoT so far (although yeah, need to play full game first).
Also I've warmed to the 3D in this. When I put it on half anyway. Still got a couple of issues with the demo like the bridge section but still...
All the gossip surrounding the demo's 18 rating doesn't really surprise me. I've seen this sort of thing happen before with other games as well. Tomb Raider Anniversary, for example, was given a 12 certificate by the BBFC, while PEGI gave the game a 16 rating. Also, the Assassin's Creed games were each rated 15 by the BBFC, and rated 18 by PEGI. Since BBFC ratings only take effect in the UK, and the both of them have their own separate rating systems and guidelines, I don't think this means the demo will be any different from the full game in terms of violence
