Sakaguchi: Final Fantasy 1 is my proudest moment

Creator of Final Fantasy has fond memories of his original RPG

Last week we reported that Hironobu Sakaguchi is tired of talking about Final Fantasy. Despite this, he has admitted that the original Final Fantasy is the game that he's most proud of.

Sakaguchi's Last Story is due for release in the UK this Friday but the legendary director went right back to the beginning when asked to name the game that he was most proud of during the recent BAFTA event in London.

Sakaguchi said: "Final Fantasy 1. I have a lot of memories from that time. It was my starting point so it would probably be Final Fantasy 1."

Final Fantasy was originally released for NES in 1987 and the original is now available through the Wii's Virtual Console. Since then, many sequels and spins-offs have been released but Sakaguchi moved on from Final Fantasy to form Mistwalker, who are responsible for The Last Story.

However, he insists that the famous RPG series is in good hands. "I still go out drinking with Yoshinori Kitase, the current producer of Final Fantasy, once in a while, and on those occasions he does tell me that it's all fine," Sakaguchi told CVG. "Sometimes, I personally complain a little bit about certain things about the franchise.

"But when I left Square, I left the franchise in Kitase's hands, and he promised me he would protect and progress the Final Fantasy brand. He has been my right-hand man since round about the middle of Final Fantasy III, and therefore I have a lot of trust in him. I believe that if it's him in charge, he will continue to create good games for the franchise."

What do you think is the best game that Sakaguchi has ever worked on? Thoughts below please!

He's like the guy who doesn't want to talk about his ex girlfriend but keep on doing it anyway.

My guilty conscience keeps telling me to vote Final Fantasy VII, but I really want to say FFIX, purely because I feel it gets no love.

I'm playing Chrono Trigger atm, and for a game thats 16-17 years old all I ever think is wow. Its just so enjoyable and ingeniously intricate for an aged retro game.

Sakaguchi only produces quality and I'm sure TLS will be no different.
