Miyamoto vetoed Pikmin cameo in Super Mario Galaxy 2

Hayashida proposed Pikmin and DK cameos

Super Mario Galaxy 2 starred Yoshi alongside Mario but Koichi Hayashida has admitted that the game could have featured more Nintendo characters had Miyamoto not ruled out a proposal.

According to director Koichi Hayashida, Pikmin and Donkey Kong cameos were suggested for Super Mario Galaxy 2 but Miyamoto vetoed the idea.

"One of the early proposals that we discussed for Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the possibility of including characters from other [Nintendo] franchises," Hayashida told Game Trailers. "For example, you might have Donkey Kong or Pikmin show up."

Cue the Miyamoto veto. "We presented this to Mr. Miyamoto, but he came down pretty hard, saying that there has to be a functional reason to include characters of a certain type in a game. He went to specify precisely why the Pikmin wouldn't work.

"In the Pikmin games, you'll notice that all the Pikmin are very thin - tall and narrow for their frame. Mario enemies tend to be on the short and squat side and there's a functional reason for that. They're easier to stomp on. They're lower so you can get above them and broader so you can land on them. In that sense, Pikmin are just not well suited for the Mario universe."

While Mario Galaxy 2 didn't feature cameo appearances from Pikmin or Donkey Kong, Mario isn't a stranger to the odd cameo appearance. Here are the best Mario cameos.

    Well, that's kinda harsh.

Donkey Kong is a Mario character... But Pikmin wouldn't work because Mario is the size of a human, and Pikmin are the size of a 50p coin

Donkey Kong should appear as a boss in a Mario platformer chucking barrels. Bowser pays "homage" to DK by throwing barrels at the end of Super Mario 3D Land so it'd be nice if DK did appear properly.
And it's not as if DK isn't considered part of the Mario canon as nearly every piece of merchandising has him and Diddy plastered on it.

Funny you should mention Mario's size. When stood against Sonic in their Olympic-based games, he's the the same size. Considering that Sonic is 1 metre tall, then Mario is round about the same making him VERY short.

I remember a big debate in ONM towers over whether Donkey Kong was a Mario character or not. He clearly is but someone disagreed!

Donkey Kong would've worked and made sense. Nintendo could've had Donkey Kong throwing barrels at Mario in space.

I think they would have been neat as background characters.

I reckon DK could have made an appearance, possibly with his own Galaxy. Then again what could he do which hasn't already been done?

I agree with Pikmin... But Donkey Kong? God that would of been cool. Just one level would be all it needed it would of been amazing haha. Miyamoto I think this time you got it half right :P

    @tomonm
Surely its the other way around! (Mario is a Donkey Kong character), after all the name of the game that they both first appear in is "Donkey Kong"...

On topic though, I think Pikmin wouldn't work, from what I remember they are smaller than a metal coke cap. Also how tall is SUPER Mario? and is that his normal form or just his enhanced form? :?

Donkey Kong would be a tricky character to integrate in Galaxy 2 too, therefore instead of a direct cameo a Donkey Kong Country style galaxy (could even get Retro to help out with that...) would be so amazing!

Mario is supposed to be about five feet tall... so I guess Super Mario would be about ten?

Anyway, I almost want to say "c'mon, Miyamoto, you used to be cool" at this, but I guess more info would be good. Was it supposed to merely be a cameo? Or were they supposed to be enemies? If it was just actual cameos or something...

I can see where Miyamoto is coming from with the Pikmin as they wouldn't make sense in a Mario game.
I would have liked to see Donkey Kong make a cameo in Super Mario Galaxy 2 however. DK appears as a playable character in the Mario Kart games and other Mario sports titles so as has already been said he is obviously part of the Mario Universe.
Perhaps his cameo could be in the Boss Blitz Galaxy? Instead of re-using the bosses from Super Mario Galaxy in the Boss Blitz Galaxy in SMG2 it would have been amazing to re-use bosses that Mario has not fought against for over 10 years. I am thinking a three stage fight the first been against Donkey Kong, the second been against Tatanga and to round it all off a fight with Wart. Who else is with me? :)

Some of the best Zelda games had Mario enemies appearing as an almost regular appearance. Its a little disappointing that recent Zelda games haven't really had many Mario cameos at all.

The first Mario Galaxy had a cameo of Olimar's ship, at least.

Interesting. Pikmin also make an appearance near the end of Mari Golf: Toadstool Tour on the Gamecube as well.

i think pikmin would of worked well as there are off a diffrent planet
yoshi has had its own game so pikmin to appear would of been a new touch even if
it was a pop up to help you in a level if u were stuck and told you were to go next...starfox
    would be a nice xtra..
