Wii U could be first console to run a MMORPG without compromise - Funcom

Touchscreen could be a winner says MMORPG expert

Wii U could be the new home for massively multiplayer role-playing games. That's the word from Funcom developer Joel Bylos who told Official Nintendo Magazine that he's excited about the possibilities of the touchscreen controller.

As a lead content designer at Funcom - a studio specialising in MMO games such as Anarchy Online, Age Of Conan and the forthcoming Secret World - Bylos knows a thing or two about MMORPGs.

"Wii U could be the first real console on which running an MMORPG without compromise is plausible," said Bylos. "The controller is perfect for lining up those rows of hotbars that are essential in most MMOs. A customisable touchscreen interface combined with the 3D spatial movement of a console controller could be a winner."

Of course, the dream for many Nintendo fans is a MMO Pokemon game but Game Freak's Junichi Masuda shot down the idea of Pokemon RPG being released on Wii.

You can read more about the future of Wii U in the May issue of Official Nintendo Magazine which goes on sale on Thursday 5th April.

Ironic really because IGN UK has sources that Wii U isn't as powerful as the 360/PS3 ... Personally I believe the much more plentiful reports of the system being more powerful.

    @ REDBEARLUX

Saw that too but also saw developers from all over gushing about it.

THQ: “WiiU is just alot more powerful than current HD consoles it does 1080p very easy.”

Epic: “It will do things current HD consoles simply cant do its going to be a powerful box.”

Crytek: “WiiU devkits are very powerful, the specs are very good”

Vigil Games: “We had the game at the same level as high end pc version in a matter of days and a few lines of code got the game up and running on tablet in 5 mins.”

EA: “Wii U is not a transitional platform, it is a true next generation system.”

Doubt its less than 360/ps3. the reports IGN has are all unnamed sources from unnamed studios

Which is why I rarely use IGN as a source for anything. Seriously, what the fudgecakes are they on about? Just look at the E3 videos of the Zelda demo; no current gen console can render such high-quality graphics on the fly. That's evidence enough of it's greater power.

IGN are good but they seem to have short term memories and forget good Nintendo things and only focus on the bad nintendo stuff.
I agree everything i've seen of the Wii U looks great.
    rant over sorry

on topic, lots of rumor about MMOS coming to Wii U floating about. Would be awesome the Pad would be the perfect balance between keyboard and controller

Interesting to hear this after ArenaNet announced they are working on a console version of Guild Wars 2. They haven't confirmed which console yet but I can't see cross-platform MMOs happening anytime soon. Shame.

I believe Jagex tried for console versions of their online game RuneScape but the big three didn't like the idea of people with diffirent consoles playing online together.

What about Marvin Donald from Vigil saying that Wii U was on par with Ps3 and 360? He contradicts what Vigil have said about Wii U.

I dont think cross play will ever happen, though i would like to see it. I imagine people would start blaming their consoles controller for their losses 'of cause you won your 360 controllers triggers work faster'

Cross play with mmo's would only work if they release them at the same time, like if the guild wars console version released later than PC the new console guys would be at a disadvantage.

It's funny, I have always thought if anyone could pull off a massive MMORPG on home consoles it would be Nintendo.
However they've never seemed to bother going in for it. With all the friend codes and lesser powerful hardware ect.

I found that Final Fantasy 11 was actually pretty good on 360 - maybe a little better than on PC! Also, Xenoblade Chronicles is close enough in structure that if the Wii can handle that, any console on the market just now can run an MMO.

As the article says though, it's more about the controls. There hasn't really been a control system that'd allow the same flexibility in terms of the number of skill buttons it's convenient and easy to access at once. I did cite FF11 as an example I enjoyed, but I did need to play it differently to a PC MMO, focusing on fewer skills. With the Wii U, you could have all those skill buttons right there, nice and easy to find :)

i saw that article today as well and personally think its completely false, ign do have a tendency to post articles which aren't always truthful. especially when it come to Nintendo :?

Yeah see those odd-few developers were clearly paid to say those things...

I think it'll do just fine.

I just can't wait for this system, I'm really looking forward to E3 and what I want to see most is the 'out of game functionality' especially the new Nintendo Network. This NN has to surpass PSN and XBL it needs to offer a bit more than what they do particually with connectivity, utilising Social Networking effectively can be a great way to do this, a solid internet browser and connectivity could allow a whole new genre of games to pop up Facebook games designed for Wii U in mind. Social Networking and mobile devices is harming the console market and instead of trying to beat that Nintendo should be making good friends with these social networking sites. We've seen it before with the DSi and it's ability to upload photos straight to facebook, simple things like this can really change the way we use a games console. Consoles need to be so much more than they were 6 years ago, we live in an age of information and networking, being able to communicate with friends and family through the use of games consoles is something that has to happen. I have faith Nintendo will deliver the games, so what I'm looking forward to is the rest of the experience that Wii U will deliver.

    @REDBEAR
amen to that, E3 is going to be crazy, there are all this games we know are coming to Wii U e.g. Batman Arkham City (which is getting new story dlc... hmm i wonder why ;) lol) but know/have seen nothing about them.
I agree nintendo needs to play well with the social networks, i suspect that facebook integration may be more... well integrated than the base FB apps for 360/ps3. have it pop up on the bottom screen when the game is paused.

My girlfriend is obsessed with the Juggernaut style vs modes of the tech demos and the FPS vs RTS enemy director of the KILLER FREAKS. She likes the idea of having an massive advantage lol

one thing i do want to hear at E3 is an wireless classic pro pad

Come on, Sega! Phantasy Star Online! Do it!

  19. Gazry Wednesday 4th Apr 2012 at 09:08

Not just MMORPGs. It'll be great for Real Time Strategy games, Rollercoaster Tycoon and Age of Empires would work beautifully with a tablet controller.

Pikmin will be awesome if it utilizes features properly. WiiU has so much potential, I can't wait for E3.

Let's stop talking about these rumours started by 'anonymous third parties' and just wait for official word from N.

Ugh, no. Ruined the good name of Phantasy Star that did.

I liked it. It was different. The weapons were cool, the character classes and customisation were interesting, and the Hunter's Guild jobs were limited but lots of fun. The only downside was that it was quite slow going, and the offline story mode was quite difficult on your own. A new one though could improve on those issues.

As a game, it was pretty good. As a Phantasy Star, it was a terrible slur on the name.
