New Mario and Pikmin at E3?

Internet goes crazy, official statements released, internet goes crazier

Will we see a new Mario and Pikmin game at E3 this year? It looks likely, if you believe the latest rumours swirling around the web this morning.

It all stemmed from a Miyamoto interview in Spanish newspaper El Mundo, translated by Eurogamer, which suggested that a new Super Mario game would be revealed for Wii U.

It was later confirmed to Eurogamer by a Nintendo rep, who is quoted as saying: "In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."

Then, Kotaku chimed in with two official statements from Nintendo Of America, which also confirm that Pikmin 3 will be appearing at E3 in June:

"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Pikmin game will be shown at the E3 Expo in June. He believes that anyone who has played Pikmin games in the past will enjoy playing."

"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."

So Pikmin's a dead cert, and it looks like New Super Mario Bros. Mii is coming too, although that's not 100% confirmed. What's your response to the latest rumours?

    Hooray! :D

Another flaming Mario game. Lather, rinse, repeat.

    Looking forward to Pikmin though.

Nintendo need to follow through with 3rd party stuff. So say Toad himself!

  4. KairiZero Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 12:21

I'm hoping that they show something drastically different than Super Mario Bros Mii. There's only so many times you can play similar things over and over. Fingers crossed for something a little more inventive...

I am quite exctied about the fact that Nintendo have released this information now as it makes you wonder what suprises they are holding back until E3 if it is not a new Mario or Pikmin game.
If the new Mario game for WiiU is New Super Mario Bross Mii i hope it is different enough when compared to the previous two games. For example the worlds in both games were the same but with different levels, i would like new worlds that suprise me, the chance to play as my Mii will be good fun though. Hopefully this will be a launch title for WiiU making it the first original Mario launch title since Mario 64 back in 1997!

Pikmin 3 would be a great launch title as well as i imagine the WiiU controller could be put to good use for firing your Pikmin at enemies and seeing where your ship parts are by displaying a map on the Wii U controller.

Clever marekting by Nintendo perhaps, releasing Wii U information at a seemingly unrelated Louvre 3DS event-creates a lot of buzz. Pikmin Wii U will be awesome, I remember getting so absorbed in the Gamecube version.

    supermurgitroid

  8. shy guy 64 Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 13:54

    that seemed quite likely anyway

It's not going to be Super Mario Bros. Mii. They said based off what they showed, and with them registering the domain name SuperMario4 it seems quite logical at this point that the Wii U game is in fact Super Mario Bros 4.

  10. NessPSI Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 14:02

    Screw Mario.
We want Mother 4, even though it won't happen.
It might work, considering the fact that Earthbound 64 existed.
But finally, Pikmin 3, I don't really care much about.
What I'm really hyped about is SSB4, so they can make Prince Poo a playable character. I'll still stick with Ness, mind.

FINALLY!!! New Pikmin info coming soon! Dying to find out some kind of news for the game!

  12. Missile T Dog Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 15:15

Excellent news on the pikmin 3 front, it's almost like the wii u was designed with pikmin in mind, what with all that touch screen and HD wizardry. No complaints on the mario front either, I mean it's a mario game so it's unlikely it'll be bad, however I'm worried that mario games are coming to quickly, with this and the upcoming side scroller for 3ds, they just don't seem as special anymore, just one loops among the masses. Anyway I sure both will be good :)

You've hit the nail right on the head there! At least that's what I'd like to believe.

I have plenty of Mario and Pikmin is Pikmin. I want StarFox and F-Zero! What's happening Nintendo? and they had better announce the new name for WiiU already. Wii was supposed to be for universal trademark for togetherness and now they have put a U in front of it for no reason and slangly implying that your together but on your own :?

I also want more consorts and CDs. Game soundtracks to be released with games from now on please :D

  16. cheatmaster30 Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 16:38

Sounds good. There's no guarantee it'll still involve Miis (other than being based on the NSMB Mii demo), and any 2D Mario game is awesome. Plus, considering how well New Super Mario Bros Wii sold, Nintendo would be mad to not have a follow up available as quickly as possible.

It seems you and so many others have got the wrong idea about the the Wii U... It's not a console purely for third parties or their games. Nintendo will do what they always do for the console and new projects, which are being worked on - but this console is being developed based on what third party developers want from the console (online, graphics, resolution), to ensure they will develop more third party games for it.

It doesn't at all mean Nintendo will "harcore-ise" their games for people, it just means they want more people to develop the stupidly labelled "hardcore" games on the console, that people didn't develop for Wii. So, it's their new console, with tons more third party games being developed for it... Just to set the record straight.

Nintendo MAY bring a single (or maybe two) original IP's that are for a more "hardcore" audience (I still hate that word - a gamer should purely be a gamer, no matter what games they play and should not judge others and bully).

I actually hope that Mii's in Mario Gear ARE involved, would be a nice touch... but I don't like the idea of the title being all about them. It would be interesting if Mii's are involved somehow in the story, like coming from the land of Wii-U haha... I don't know, it would bring something new into the fold.

I hope the anouncment is about Super Mario Bros. 4. Should be a good one :P

  20. thenintendoer Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 18:03

hopefully its not another new super mario bros game while i do enjoy these games their not really feeling very "new" anymore

But Super Mario World is Super Mario Bros. 4... No, really, it is. In Japan it is known as Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World.

  22. goomba_slayer Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 18:53

I'm excited about Pikmin 3, however New Super Mario Bros. Mii, not so much. I'd be much more excited by a Super Mario Galaxy 3, but I highly doubt it will happen.

  23. Buffalo_K Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 19:26

Unless its SMG3, the I don't care about the new Mario.
Pikmin, on the other hand? Well, the closer to launch the better.

  24. PurplePikmin2009 Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 19:29

I'd rather have Sunshine 2. We have already had a sequel to Galaxy. We don't need another. But even better than a Sunshine sequel would be an entirely new 3D Mario game! Pikmin 3? I've waited 8 years for this game to show itself and now in less than two months it's going to happen. Words cannot describe how I feel! I just hope all the time and work put into it has made it amazing

  25. NintyHippo Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 20:57

Super Mario 3D Land was too similar to the 2D games. I think it should be a side-scrolling Super Mario 64. Even if it was the exact same as Super Mario 64 DS but on a 2D axis I would be very happy. Super Mario 64 DS is the best Mario platformer.

  26. Cyberguy Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 20:59

    Please not Mario Bros. Mii.....

  27. RedBearLuX Tuesday 17th Apr 2012 at 23:40

Yes I know it is but it isn't widely regarded as such, just like the original Legend of Zelda was in fact called The Hyrule Fantasy: The Legend of Zelda. The Legend of Zelda was in fact it's subtitle and yet became the name for the entire series and not The Hyrule Fantasy. Just as Super Mario Bros 4 became Super Mario World and the fan base widely regards them as pretty much seperate as there was a Super Mario World 2 created but that wasn't called Super Mario Bros 4: Super Mario World 2.

Basically I suspect Nintendo will ignore Super Mario World as Super Mario Bros 4 as it was only known as such in Japan. And create a 4th installment in the series that stands seperate from Super Mario World. After all what else could the SuperMario4 domain name possibly suggest?

Wow. I never knew that. Thanks for the fact.

I want the Mario game to be New Super Mario 64. I wonder if it will have a level editor and connectivity with the 3DS one.

  29. danbish Wednesday 18th Apr 2012 at 09:17

Words cannot say just how excited I am about these - especially Pikmin! Wohooo!! :D

  30. MartinIsAwesome Wednesday 18th Apr 2012 at 10:59

It can't just be New Super Mario Bros. Mii. It has to be something way more innovative than a HD version of what we've already played twice before.

  31. imbusydoctorwho Wednesday 18th Apr 2012 at 11:20

I don't want any New Super Mario Bros game,Super Mario 4 yes,but not NSMB.

    Great news about Pikmin nevertheless.

Sometimes registering domain names is done specifically to grab people who make typos. Nintendo have a few domains registered that are simple typographical errors and things like that.

It's possible they may make a new Mario Bros. game and call it SMB4 for in the west for marketing purposes and something else in Japan, I suppose. Plus that paves the way for a SMB5 across all countries in future. But pulling a Sonic The Hedgehog 4 seems unlikely, given that SMW really was just a direct sequel to SMB3. There's nothing particularly special that makes it not a Bros. title. Besides, SMB4 is on the logo in Japan, its not really a hidden subtitle or anything. Then again, it wasn't on the title screen of the game itself, so who knows.

Personally I just hope the next Mario game has a world map like SMW, with secret exits and lots of alternate routes. Plus I would really hope they avoid the eight different world varieties they've been overusing in the NSMB games. Grass, desert, water, forest, mountain, ice, sky, lava, it's all very dull to use the same eight themes over and over. SMB3 and SMW mixed it up a lot, but the NSMB games are very rigid in their structure.

Better bosses too, thanks. NSMB was on the right track with that, at least.

  33. NintyHippo Wednesday 18th Apr 2012 at 16:16

Super Mario 64 had the best bosses, and the best hub/map.

Oh God I can't wait for E3 I hope more Info is released for super smash bros. Wii U/3DS
Beyond Birthday has a good point about the mario though.
looking forward to Pik 3. Black explosive pikmin? Green pikmin who can clone themselves? Candypop pikmin that can change other pikmin's colour to it's own while flipping randomly between other colours? the possibilities are endless!

  35. RiksilveR Wednesday 18th Apr 2012 at 16:40

I might be getting ahead of myself here, but i reckon a new SMW might be on the table; there were a couple of little nods to it in 3D Land: after one of the finishing postcards (can't remember if it was Tanooki Peach, Mario and Peach sat in the tree or Luigi in prison) it played the little end level eee-oo-woh from SMW and some of the notechases played some SMW music. I'm probably looking too deep into that though.

And hippo Pikmin that can fly and shoot lasers out of their bottom!

  37. Medea Thursday 19th Apr 2012 at 10:49

If it was a Super Mario game as in a type like 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, then I might get excited. But I don't think we need another Bros. game just yet

What's your response to the latest rumours?
Isn't It pretty obvious that our plumber was going to make an appearance on the 'next gen'? And Pikmin has been hinted at for ages now, I mean come on guys, Get with the programme!

  40. taximadish Friday 20th Apr 2012 at 06:38

I can't wait for Pikmin 3. It'll be very interesting what they do that makes it different to the first two... New colours maybe? I expect it'll use the Wii U controller for something cool. I hope they only have Olimar and no Louie or Mr.President helping this time around. But that's just personal preference :)

The issue isn't that there's going to be a new Mario game. Its about the timing. We've only just had Super Mario 3D Land, and another new 3DS game will be released this year. On top of that an announcement of another one. I know the Pipe Trekker sells well and shifts systems, but proper Mario platforming adventures used to few and far between. I'm conserned that if Mario games become annual affairs then there may not be enough diversity and innovation between them.

  42. Icytroid1993 Friday 20th Apr 2012 at 11:05

I'm happy overall, Mario is always a good thing, but for crying out loud WHERE IS METROID!?!?!?

So your saying the demo is only called super mario bros mii? And when the actual game comes out it will be Super Mario Bros 4? Really I would think that will be awesome if they call it that! :-D Are they really going to call it that?
