Best GameCube games ever

GameCube was released 10 years ago! Here are the best games for the console!

Wow! Is it really ten years ago to the day that GameCube was released in the UK? We still remember being charmed by Luigi's Mansion and soaring through the Death Star in Star Wars: Rogue Leader. Great memories, but neither of these games make our top ten best GameCube games. Read it now and perhaps dust of your old console and mark the ten year anniversary by playing one of them this evening.

10. Super Mario Sunshine

Mario's sun-drenched GameCube debut beautifully showcased the new console's graphical power while giving Nintendo's biggest star a new toy, F.L.U.D.D. It was a swiss-army knife crossed with a Super Soaker and Isle Delfino was a scenic paradise we just couldn't resist. Not Mario's best, but still excellent.

I got a Gamcube in late 2010. It's a geat console! So far the games I have are:

    Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
    Mario Kart: Double Dash
The Legend Of Zelda Collectors Edition
    Mario Party 4
    Mario Party 5
    Mario Smash Football
    Super Monkey Ball
    FIFA Football 2004
    Super Smash Bros Melee
    Super Mario Sunshine

I hope to get Paper Mario 2 and maybe F-Zero GX, Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin 2.

  2. hammster Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 14:35

Animal Crossing is my number one.

Most my favourite games on GameCube were the quirkier ones like Billy Hatcher. I think GameCube is king of those kinda more obscure quirkier hidden gems.

Also honourable mention to Mario Party 5 which me and my family still play really regularly and is the most under appreciated Mario Party.

The Gamecube was amazing! Every Nintendo game was an innovation and experiment, and they pulled all of them off! There were so many great games, I don't know how you managed to narrow it down to make a top 10.

  4. PokeMarti Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 14:44

Soul Calibur 2 <3 not a gamecube exclusive but still one of my fave games of all time :)

  5. m_lockier Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 14:47

    two other mentions,

One of my favourite games of all time -- Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Probably the best of the Series -- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life

  6. LordGhirahim64 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 15:07

    6. Mario Kart Double Dash
    5.Luigi's Mansion
    4. Kirby Air Ride
    3. Super Mario Sunshine
    2. Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc
    1. Zelda Wind Waker

  7. grunt35 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 15:19

    errrrrrr where was Killer 7??????????
by far the best game on the console!!!!!

  8. Messi97 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 15:22

No Luigi's Mansion in the list? This is blasphemy! I bet it Neil said it wasn't allowed

  9. Xenobladeperson Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 15:44

I was reading the 100 greatest games ever in an old ONM a few minutes ago. All the writing above is exactly what is written in the magazine, put some effort into it...

  10. GuitarHero Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 15:46

I think you misspelt Beyond Good and Evil, see in the article it says Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker when you meant to put Beyond Good and Evil. I guess it is a pretty easy mistake to make

  11. shy guy 64 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 16:17

i wont deny the wind waker beeing in fact a zelda game institly become top of my list

followed by thousand year door, melee, and billy hatcher

and chibi-robo gets a special mention to

  12. Kirby8 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 16:42

Soul Calibur 2 <3 not a gamecube exclusive but still one of my fave games of all time :)

Agree! Soul Calibur 2 is a great game!!

chibi-robo gets a special mention too

Love Chibi-Robo! Definitely deserves a place on the list!

Love all the games on this list. I think some others deserve a mention though, like Pokémon Colosseum and XD, as they are some of the best Pokémon spin-offs. A lot of other greats deserve a mention, such as Kirby Air Ride (Had a lot of fun playing it), Sonic Heroes, Mario Kart: Double Dash and the Mario Party games. You could have made a paragraph at the end to give some more a mention. =)

I think my list would be a bit different because, although I love all the games, I played and enjoyed some more then others, and played some of the ones I mentioned above a lot more. But still, all great games. =)

  13. reeesy Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 16:43

Ahh i wanna play Wind Waker now :)

  14. pikachugoomba Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 16:55

I am shocked that Melee never made it into the list!
It may be easy but I was only ever topped by Brawl.
All the characters I recognized, and I picked it up for 50p. A friend has Brawl, but I never got to play it. Since I am not very good at games, and have not played Brawl, I would put it #1 if I wrote the list

  15. shadowlugia101 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 17:09

the gamecube was the first ever console that i played on and super mario sunshine was the first ever game i owned as my mum bought it for me because i was doing good in my swimming lessons so it holds my best ever gaming memories :D

  16. MartinIsAwesome Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 17:14

How are the likes of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and Eternal Darkness not on this list?

  17. thenintendoer Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 17:48

in my opinion the gamecube was probably the most underated console ever it had tons of great games from new and old franshises and also had some cracking 3rd party titles

  18. JamieRIOT Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 18:29

What an incredibly underrated console, I loved the Gamecube! It also has the best ever controller in my opinion.

  19. JamieRIOT Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 18:34

How are the likes of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and Eternal Darkness not on this list?

I agree. I guess the Gamecube had that many awesome games, it's hard to please everyone with a top 10 list.

  20. kirbysonic Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 18:45

How could you not mention these games, ONM?!
Metal Arms Glitch in the System
    Red Faction 2
    Sonic Heroes
    Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
    Sonic Adventure DX
    Luigis Mansion
    Super Smash Bros Melee

I love the Gamecube! Hail to the cube!

  21. Amethyst Link Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 19:01

Errrrmm, I'm a little confused... The homepage said that this was a Kingdom Hearts 3D preview, but when I clicked it, I ended up here...?

  22. TaskOfMajora Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 19:11

Wind Waker at number 1, as it should be.

And i'm sure that Twilight Princess (which i'm playing currently for the first time ever!) would be a hell of a lot higher if they were talking about the Wii version.

  23. Buffalo_K Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 19:17

When I saw this article, I made a mental note of what these top 10 were going to be. I clicked the article, and got them all right. Wind Waker is number 1? Didn't see that one coming.

  24. MartinIsAwesome Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 20:08

And i'm sure that Twilight Princess (which i'm playing currently for the first time ever!) would be a hell of a lot higher if they were talking about the Wii version.

Actually the Gamecube version is loads better. Fact.

  25. Wii U Marry Mii Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 20:18

I don't know why but Animal Crossing GC is my favourite one out of the series. I used to love going to the message board and being told there was a treasure buried in a certain acre!

  26. I Am Error Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 20:24

So glad you put mario sunshine on there...ah the memories. Getting chilies and yoshi were one of my favourite things to do when i was younger ALSO WHERE THE HECK IS MRK DD?!?!?!?! mario kart double dash was and still is one of my favourite games and the best mario kart out there. If nintendo are bringing out n64,nes and snes games why not GC?(im talking 3ds as there is no point for the wii as it can play gc anyway) after all it has been ten years. seeing double dash on 3ds would be amazing + sunshine and countless others. sure maybe there is Mk 7 and super mario land 3ds and luigi mansion 2 and animal crossing 3d, but still seeing the older or original versions of these games who be amazing! Gamecube for the (nope not win) 3D!!!!!

  27. Ai64 Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 20:48

Happy birthday to Gamecube! I remember the first two games I had. Sunshine and melee. Awsome! :D

  28. Tailzy Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 20:52

Pikmin 2, Wind Waker and Melee.

You only need any of these to justify a gamecube purchase.

  29. Kesskuron Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 21:22

    You missed F-Zero GX
Go back and do it again

  30. RavenxPrime Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 21:26

    Skies of Arcadia Legends
    Viewtiful Joe
    Billy Hatcher
    F-Zero GX
    Eternal Darkness
    Metal Gear Solid
    Phantasy Star Online
    Soul Calibur II

There's 10 that should keep ya busy :D

  31. ninjafox Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 21:48

Hard to believe the Gamecube is already 10 years old!
I love Wind Waker and it would be my favourite Zelda game ever were it not for that triforce hunt at the end!
Tales of Symphonia, Mario Kart Double Dash!!, Eternal Darkness and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door were all great titles as well and Mario Sunshine is a great game to play as it always makes you think of summer despite having a few frustrating missions.
The first Gamecube game i ever played was Luigis Mansion i remember been amazed by how good it looked as Luigi walked up the path to the mansion following that map, ahh nostalgia.

  32. GuitarHero Thursday 3rd May 2012 at 22:26

Maybe a Top Ten wasn't a good idea, a much bigger list is required to show off the true awesomeness that was the Cube.

  33. imbusydoctorwho Friday 4th May 2012 at 07:30

Glad Prime made that list,it was a brilliant game.

  34. Bigcol1611 Friday 4th May 2012 at 08:04

    What!!!??? No Tales of Symphonia??

Loved my gamecube to bits, but I have just sold off some of the games to pay for the family's holiday, and now seeing this has made me cry!!

  35. alexkinch Friday 4th May 2012 at 09:29

i love my cube games and if not for my game boy player would have sold it off as wii plays my cube games. zelda tp and ww, metal gear solid, resident evil 4, sonic classic collection and jedi knight two being some of my faves.

it was also my first time being able to play majoras mask on collecters disk.

  36. MartinIsAwesome Friday 4th May 2012 at 11:37

Tales of Symphonia, Mario Kart Double Dash!!, Eternal Darkness and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door were all great titles

    What!!!??? No Tales of Symphonia??

  38. CraigEmberson Friday 4th May 2012 at 13:44

I loved the Wind Waker, it had so much personality and charm and enhanced what the other Zelda games could do. I'd have to say The Wind Waker is 2nd to Skyward Sword, which transformed how it presented emotions and all last year. I'm hoping for Gamecube games on Wii U's eShop equivalent though, which should happen I hope.

I do think people completely miss how the Wii improved on the Gamecube though... For a start, the Wii has much better lighting settings and while the Gamecube was 128bit, the Wii is 192bit which is still an improvement and gives it more rounded shapes (Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2). It was mainly the motion control though obviously but I believe they got it right with Wii anyway, despite some other narrow minded gamers blaming it for not being about war and guns in an HD suit LOL!

I'd love to play the Wind Waker with new play controls on Wii U or with the Wii Remote, kind of like how you can use the Circle Pad on old games now. With new characters coming, I think that the Wii U could be much like the Gamecube - Misunderstood at first but a fantastic machine, with great games from every spectrum.

  39. Redfish20 Friday 4th May 2012 at 14:01

my back-flipping pigeon I feel old.

I take it that Zelda Collectors Edition doesn't really count otherwise that would easily have claimed the top spot.
I'd also say that the competition between Prime and Prime 2 for which is better is closer than a lot of people give Prime 2 credit for.

  40. samus_killer Friday 4th May 2012 at 14:56

A reasonable list there, Tom. As I'm a sucker for the underrated 'cube and top 10 lists in general, here's my top 10 GC games (as in from the only ones I own).

    1. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
    2. Zelda: The Wind Waker
    3. Animal Crossing
    4. Metroid Prime
    5. Super Mario Sunshine
    6. Paper Mario: TTYD
    7. Timesplitters 2
    8. Super Smash Bros. Melee
    9. Wario Ware MPG
    10. Super Monkey Ball

  41. olrodlegacy Friday 4th May 2012 at 15:26

I was getting ready to complain at Resi 4 and Wind Waker not being 2 and 1 respectively... but you delivered!

Sunshine always has been unjustifiably underrated because it doesn't fit the trend of other Mario games... if anything this is what made it better. Best level designs, best hub and meaningful plot points litter the game after getting certain stars. Brilliant game.

  42. Violet Friday 4th May 2012 at 15:33

Two Resident Evil games and no F-Zero GX? Poor show. REmake is good but it's not THAT good.

  43. vtheyoshi Friday 4th May 2012 at 16:20

It's great to see that there is still love for my favourite console after ten years.

  44. Commandervideo Friday 4th May 2012 at 17:57

    1) Pikmin 2
    2) Pikmin 1
    3) Mario Smash Football
    4) Chibi-robo
    5) Wave Race:Blue Storm
    6) Super Mario Sunshine

I could easily put chibi-robo as number 1 and wave race is way better than MK double dash while mario football is some of the best multiplayer there is but it's been beaten by the mighty strikers charged on wii

  45. colourblindyoshi Friday 4th May 2012 at 18:24

the gamecube in one of my favourite consoles ever. its so dinky, but i think we're forgetting two things.

the gameboy player, though not technically a game, made every gba game suddenly more amazing than ever. i still have it plugged in, and i still use it on a regular basis. turns metroid fusion into super metroid on steroids. turns pokemon into a game where the pokemon are actual size. i like that.

donkey konga is my favourite party game ever. quite hard, but quick and simple. its the best console rhythm action game i've ever played, in my opinion, and is a game of pure joy. it has its faults, but i still love it immensely, especially when you're doing 4 player. thats just unbelievable fun.

i never played wind waker, i hate to say it, until last year. it shot up very very suddenly to one of my favourite games ever. thanks, cex, for that Ł5 copy. easily the best on the cube that i have played.

  46. zwii01 Friday 4th May 2012 at 18:56

Ah the GameCube, what a machine! It had so many great games its almost unfair to just choose 10. I have to agree with Windwaker taking the top spot. I played it recently and couldn't believe how it looks as good as it does even to this day, despite Ocarina being my first Zelda game.

I agree with pretty much everything on the list but because I am greedy I would also include: Tales of Symphonia (yeah I'm one of them), Double Dash (you can't beat a quick race on Baby Park!), Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (still play it to this day with my friend and nearly got 100 wins on battle!) and Viewtiful Joe. That's just a tiny amount of the great games in the Gamecube's library, which I agree was home to some very quirky high quality games of that generation.

(Oh and Marti great choice! Soul Calibur 2 was great fun and definitely the better version of the 3!)

  47. EpicMario Friday 4th May 2012 at 19:14

    Soul Calibre: Legendary!!!!!

  48. niggyt2004 Friday 4th May 2012 at 19:23

the rouge squadron games were great. animal crossing was good for all the free nes games

  49. JWick Friday 4th May 2012 at 20:13

The Gamecube had such a good library, but my top ten would be:

    10. Pokemon Colosseum
    9. Soul Calibur 2
    8. Super Mario Sunshine
    7. Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
    6. Sonic Heroes
    5. Metroid Prime 1
    4. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    3. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
    2. Sonic Adventure DX
    1. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

  50. fluggy2003 Saturday 5th May 2012 at 08:53

No Eternal Darkness??. Beyond Good and Evil should at least be top ten. An absolute classic and a really engrossing tale of conspiracy! Always thought Prime was vastly overrated - Backtracking, enemies that continually regenerate over and over from exactly same places - nowhere near as good as Super Metroid!!! Loved the Resi 1 remake, I would put that in top 3 and Resi 4 should be number 1. Wind Waker was great but Resi 4 beats it!

  51. lrwr14 Saturday 5th May 2012 at 15:05

I think Paper Mario should be higher up, it's an amazing game( and very rare to find). I do agree with LoZ WW being number one, that game still has so much nostalgia. I would love a 3D remake of it, or even a "new play controls" version for the wii.

  52. cheatmaster30 Saturday 5th May 2012 at 20:20

Kind of surprised Super Mario Sunshine is only 10th, especially in an official Nintendo magazine where all the rest of their 'best games' lists have a Mario game as 'best ever'.

The choices on the list are generally good however, although maybe it would have been better to have a top 20 or something considering how many good games were on the Gamecube.

  53. GeneralKellie Monday 7th May 2012 at 13:16

    01. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    02. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
    03. Super Smash Bros. Melee
    04. Luigi's Mansion
    05. Starfox Adventures
    06. Super Mario Sunshine
    07. Soul Calibur 2
    08. Mario KartDouble Dash
    09. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
    10. Resident Evil

pikmin shouldn't be on the top 10 because it's a very boring game and i don't understand the massive buzz around resident evil 4 again it's boring there are much more interesting games on the gamecube.

  54. TheGeekCentre Monday 7th May 2012 at 17:21

I mostly agree with this list. The fact that neither Luigi's Mansion and F-Zero GX is missing is the only downfall. That and the fact that I think Melee should've been number one, with Wind Waker being third. I've never played Resi 4, so I don't really understand all the interest in it, but if it's as good as people say, maybe I should give it a go.

    10. Pikmin
    9. Animal Crossing
    8. Luigi's Mansion
    7. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$
    6. Metroid Prime
    5. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
    4. Super Mario Sunshine
    3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    2. F-Zero GX
    1. Super Smash Bros. Melee

  55. yoshimad Tuesday 8th May 2012 at 11:09

    Mario Kart: Double Dash
The Legend Of Zelda Collectors Edition (made my life) :D
    Mario Smash Football
    Super Smash Bros Melee
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Bloody Roar Primal Fury
Crazy Taxi (I glitched it was soo funny at the time) :)
    Zelda Four Sword Adventures
    Soul Calibur 2

Ahhhhh I still play these on my Wii... :D

  56. SonicFreak Friday 11th May 2012 at 19:41

Good games, but my favourite game of all time was on the Gamecube and you didn't mention it! Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. That's all I'm gonna say

  57. debsie Saturday 12th May 2012 at 10:07

What about monkey ball? Fantastic multiplayer should have been top 10 :D

  58. funkysi Saturday 12th May 2012 at 20:40

Totally agree with Zelda being on top. It got loads of stick for its graphics but I thought it looked amazing and still do. I can still play on it now and fall in love again with the look and feel of it. The music in it was great too nd went well with the game. And of course the gameplay was to the brilliant Zelda standard.
Definitely one of the best Zelda games nd THE best GameCube game

  59. funkysi Saturday 12th May 2012 at 20:43

And yeah, it would of been nice see Luigi's Mansion in there and Beyond Good & Evil

  60. Deoxys0125 Sunday 27th May 2012 at 10:45

I'm glad Super Mario Sunshine was in there! It's one of my favourite Gamecube games (I know lots of people will disagree with that), but I loved it and would like to see a sequel at some point. I do however feel that Luigi's Mansion should have been in there.

  61. wghtmf Thursday 7th Jun 2012 at 17:03

Look at the date this was published. 1970? :?

  62. KH81314 Wednesday 23rd Jan 2013 at 14:22

Cant wait to play some of these on my Wii U.

  63. buzzboy42 Monday 13th May 2013 at 12:10

...And now the wind waker is getting an HD remake! :D

  64. toffeeman30 Monday 13th May 2013 at 12:15
