Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS to be co-developed by Namco Bandai

Tekken, Soul Calibur and Tales developers to work on new Smash Bros games

Namco Bandai is to help out on development duties on Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS. That was the first big news from the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast.

Namco Bandai, the developers of the Pac-Man games, Tekken and the Tales RPG series, will be joining forces with Sakurai's Project Sora team to develop the game.

Following the broadcast, Namco Bandai's Masaya Kobayashi revealed the team who would be working on Smash Bros. "In order to make Mr. Sakurai proud, we will take on this project with Namco Bandai's best staff! Yoshito Higuchi, the producer and the director of the Tales series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs., the art director/sound director of the SoulCalibur series, the main development team staff from the Tekken series... and that's just for starters.

"All the top creators from Namco Bandai are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project. We will fully utilize our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful Super Smash Bros. title ever! Don't miss it!"

Wonder if any characters from Namco Bandai's games will be in the game? Pac-Man for Smash Bros, anyone?

When I heard this part, I was shocked. Not necessarily in a bad way...just shocked. I hope this speeds production while keeping up quality!

Development only just started following the release of Kid Icarus: Uprising earlier this year. Because of this, they don't have ANYTHING ready to show. It's Iwata's fault for announcing products that didn't exist in any form at all last year.

I really hope they put Lloyd Irvin from Tales of Symphonia in it. He is an awesome character and would be perfect for it.

PAC-Man would easily win if he was put in Smash Bros. He'd just eat the other fighters.

Sounds good I just hope the game isn't flooded with Namco Bandai characters and Nintendo characters get shunned. I think I hear the distant jangling of money leaving me for DLC packs. WORTH IT!!

    I concur. I've alread chosen his move-set:
    Standard Special = Demon Fang
Side Special = Sword Rain Alpha
    Up Special = Tiger Rage
    Down Special = Rising Falcon.
Sonic Thrust or Beast could be worked in as his Smash Attack.

Interesting, hopefully will turn out to be a good move. Trying to think which Namco characters will make an appearance now.

Interesting move,I'll look forward to hearing more about that.
Pac Man would be pretty good as a playable character, and a few Tekken characters would be ace as well.

Im glad that they have namco on board, i just hope they dont decided to split the roster 50/50. Id say no more than 3 namco characters, i don't want to see smash bros become full of 3rd party characters

Don't worry about that. Developers from many different companies worked on Brawl but we only got two 3rd Party characters. I hope Namco do get one character though, both in recognition of their work on this game and their long-standing partnership with Nintendo. In all seriousness though it's got to be Pac-Man though. He is practically their mascot.

So that leaves a good chance Pac-man will be playable. Interesting

Simply put, OMG. We can expect an awesome story mode then. Even some fine tuning to the battle system.

This is very good news! Namco-Bandai are experienced when it comes to this genre of video game. Hopefully we'll be seeing plenty of new features in the next Smash Bros :D

I just hope this game comes out soon, it was one of the big reasons I bought a 3DS...along with Monster Hunter Tri and Animal Crossing, both of which still aren't here!

Well stop hoping, because as Sakurai has stated numerous times it won't be ready for a long while. Bare in mind that he has only just recently wrapped on Kid Icarus. This is a far greater project. Don't expect it out for at the very least three years.
