Smash Bros Wii U may not feature more characters

"In terms of quantity, we've probably already reached a limit."

Don't expect Super Smash Bros Wii U to feature more characters on the roster than were in Smash Bros Brawl. For series creator Masahiro Sakurai has said that, in terms of the quantity of content, his team has already reached the limit.

Rather than throwing more characters at Smash Bros Wii U, Sakurai is thinking about a change of direction for the fourth game in the series.

Speaking with Nintendo Power, Sakurai explained why Smash Bros Wii U might not feature a greater number of characters.

"It isn't a matter of 'if the next game has 50 characters, that'll be enough.' There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive.

"In terms of quantity, we've probably already reached the limit of what's feasible. I think a change of direction may be what's needed."

Namco Bandai will be working on Smash Bros Wii U with Sakurai's team. Perhaps they can bring some fresh ideas for Smash Bros Wii U.

I don't mind if they don't increase the number of characters as long as they don't have any clones.

  2. The_BAAD_Man Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 10:23

As long as it retains that fun, frantic Smash Bros feel, all will be well.

  3. D Gamer Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 10:24

If this means the game will be better and balanced well, the great but I personally think more characters is the way to go. The Wii U will bring more power to the table and to just use that power on stages and 'changing direction' is a little underwhelming especially when you think of all the characters Nintendo (and Namco Bandai) have at their disposal.

I agree with what he's saying. Honestly, if they have too many characters it becomes stale, and certain characters are just re skins of others ( Captain Falcoln and Ganondorf)

  5. chazrinelli Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 10:30

I was worried about the roster being overcrowded, aslong as they do bring in some new guys I'd be happy.

    Exactly.

Toon Link and Link, Ganondorf and Captain Falcon, Ness and Lucas, Fox, Falco and Wolf.

If they made those characters more unique it would be like getting 5 new characters. Also they could replace some existing characters and maybe have slightly more in the roster. 40 perhaps?

  7. JoyceyMaster Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 10:32

I'd quite like a change in characters to replace others, but maybe only up to 40 characters in total with some from Brawl being replaced :)
As long as it FEELS like Smash Bros., I won't be complaining myself...

  8. shy guy 64 Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 10:58

    well thats disappointing

i was hoping for some where between 40-50 characters

  9. LavaTwilight Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 11:07

I thought SSBB had more than enough anyway! I def think a change of characters is needed. Do we really need toon link as well as link? Also I prefer leaving the pokemon to the pokeballs, I don't see the need for huge Pokemon cast. What is necessary though is of course to replace certain characters. How about Tabuu from Brawl becomming a playable character? And has anyone thought about Simon Belmont yet? I know he's not Nintendo but he started life on the NES and would be as great an addition as Snake was for Brawl!

The phrase "A change of direction" can have so many meanings, its hard to tell what he's specifically referring to.

Taken as one message, a change of direction would be going against the standard practice of added more characters to the roster for fighting game sequals, which he explained he would be doing, so maybe the two statements mean the same thing.
It could mean a change in direction of the actual character line-up, by which I mean dropping prominant characters from previous installments, like .
It could also potentially mean something entirely different: maybe its a change in direction for the gameplay. I hope not, as Smash Bros fighting is unique with it's Ring-Out system instead of a HP based system.

  11. OrangeRakoon Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 11:22

I am hoping for some new characters. If the roster is just the same as Brawl, then that will be disappointing. But then if they replace some characters with new ones, the question that is easy to ask is 'why not just keep the old characters in too?'

What I'd really like is lots of secret characters, some with very hard unlock requirements to keep me playing. Brawl was lacking in that respect compared to melee.

  12. scottishmario Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 11:28

As long as it still feels like brawl, a larger roaster is not really necessary, however I think they could do with swapping a few faces for others and updating characters that have been in it from the beginning.

  13. Dark nemisis Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 12:08

I reckon this just means that some characters will change instead of actually adding more. Like the transition form Melee to Brawl. I hope they keep Fox, Falco and Wolf though.

    Unlocking Wolf was solid

If balance was that great a concern, then Fox and Meta Knight wouldn't be punchlines, I'm sure.

I appreciate the dedication to quality, don't get me wrong, but to me, half the fun-- of Smash Bros. more than any other fighter-- is finding out who's new to the roster. Tweak the clones to be more original (Ganondorf's move list seemed ill-fitting, anyway) and throw in some new faces. Heck, some clones aren't even that bad, like Toon Link... I'd even take Bowser Jr. as a smaller, faster, weaker version of Bowser.

At the very least, though, they'd better not take anyone out (save maybe Snake and/or Sonic, for obvious reasons, though I'd rather they stuck around).

  15. Latte Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 12:17

As long as Golden Sun characters get added >.<

  16. Issun2765 Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 12:55

And jigglypuff gets removed...he was so weak in my opinion >_<

  17. Keniahten Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 13:30

honestly, i think it would be fine if they added new characters but got ride of a few older ones (like falco and wolf (they're slower than fox but have exatly the same move set)). Also i didn't really like jigglypuff cus i never got the moves ( but that's a discussion for another thread).

  18. smashbros-kid Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 13:31

Sakurai seems to only be addressing the Wii U version of the game. There's nothing to say that the 3DS version will feature the same characters. Even given his reluctance to add too many new characters I'd say, over the two versions, a roster of 40-45 is not unreasonable.

  19. Tailzy Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 15:06

this most likely means that either a lot of decent characters will be taken out to make way for new characters, or there wont be many new characters to begin with. I'd be happy if they were going to focus on balancing the roster as much as possible and finally stop cloning characters, but this is still disappointing news regardless.

  20. Herbert_Rarr Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 15:12

Thirty-five characters was enough, but then there were a lot of clones. It would be good if there was more characters, but there doesn't need to be too many more. If they add in just five, but give the clones from Brawl their own unique move set, then that's like having about ten new characters. It should also be much harder to unlock certain characters, like the new ones or the coolest ones. When I got Brawl I unlocked all of the characters by constantly playing brawls with a second player, but no-one to play as them, giving them a 300% handicap and hitting them on a custom stage small enough that I didn't have to move to hit him. I've got a replay that's zero seconds long. Doing that, it only took me a couple of hours to unlock every character. They should make this impossible in the next game, or make it take a lot longer and seem less appealing.
About this 'change of direction' - I hope they keep the gameplay the same, single and multiplayer.
Bandai shouldn't mess about with it either; it's good their getting involved, but they better not start thinking they know better than Sakurai's team who pretty much perfected the game with Brawl.
    I hope SSB4 isn't as much a disappointment as Mario Kart 7.

  21. Violet Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 15:41

3D Smash Bros. incoming. Namco's involvement hints at this.

    Do not want this.

However, if he simply intends to rework the existing characters, give them moves better suited to their history (like making Ganondorf into Ganon or at least giving him magic projectiles and a sword and his horse and things) then that'd be fine by me. But I get the feeling he's going to change the entire structure of the franchise, which I'm not looking forward to.

If the 3DS game remains 2D gameplay I'll live with that. But with repeated quotes of Sakurai saying Brawl was the limit... well, I don't know what he's going to do.

  22. Redfish20 Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 15:50

Yup, because if they added any more it might become unbalanced. Not that Kirby and Pit were already hugely overpowered or anything.

  23. m4att1 Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 15:59

As long as they keep kirby in there some where i'll be happy :o

  24. shy guy 64 Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 16:15

As long as they keep kirby in there some where i'll be happy :o

the director of the smash series is the same guy who created kirby the chances of him ever getting taken out is below zero

  25. TheImprobableOne Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 16:30

I would say throw in a few more, but about three or so, and leave it up to the public to decide. They'll have to stop eventually though.

  26. Diddy ZX Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 16:35

and leave it up to the public to decide.

I hope not... The last time they thought that that was a good idea, we ended up with two random, irrelevant characters, with no connection to the franchise itself, to any of the featured franchises, to the developer, or to the publisher at all. It was all very incogruous. :/

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that they're looking in other directions instead of just overstuffing the roster - it must be tricky to balance it all, and an unbalanced game really isn't any fun to play.

  27. TheNUKEnukeM Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 16:48

Then what will I be paying for. How will this game play experience add new things that didn't appear in previous entry's. I might as well play brawl instead.

  28. PureAwesomeness Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 16:56

The roster is enough as it is, in my opinion. I'm not that fussed, just as long as the quality doesn't drop. I'd like to see an awesome, fast, non-draggy online function; thousands and thousands of trophies, CDs and stickers; a huge story mode with a story and longer cut scenes and no more clones! That would be my dream Smash Bros. game. But I will be hugely disappointed if the game doesn't live up to its hype, and even more so if there really aren't any new characters. Sakurai has a large task on his hands.

  29. tomutwit Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 17:05

It's simple. The only thing left is to make sure they all have unique and balanced movesets. Take out the clones like Wolf and Fox, leaving only the fan favourite, keep the same amount of characters but make sure every one is popular, kind of well known or much requested, and if you have to, have more non Nintendo characters. Personally I'd like some Capcom or Square Enix chaps. How about a King Slime? The guy from Ghost Trick (well, not a guy, but.... spoilers)? And most importantly never mind the characters, make every game mode brilliant. Subspace Emmisiary was dull and brain numbing. Online was impossible to play. Let's fix that.

  30. Oocoo Jr. Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 18:00

As long as they have some new characters, I don't mind if they keep the number the same.

  31. thenintendoer Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 18:02

i would have to agree with this though it would be nice to maybe round it up to 40 even if they dont as lonmg as they get rid of the rubbish charcters and replace them with better fighetrs and make it so there arent any clones then this is fine

  32. linkfinity Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 18:56

i'd be fine if they kept it at the current level, as long as they are hard to unlock (plus there's always dlc if they come up with something later on), but id hope they change some characters, maybe removing a few pokémon (they have there own item to cater for them) and subbing in some lesser know characters.
also, no third partys would be great, snake and sonic were a nice surprise, but it's been done now, and, other than mega man, I don't think there is any need for them, they just seem to detract from the charm of the game (no fault of there own, but to go against the entire concept is hardly what i would call a good idea)

  33. xzeldax Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 20:45

I think there's no need for even more characters but replacing some of them would spice things up. For example get rid of Falcon and Wolf and add in someone like Lord Ghirahim :P

  34. TheImprobableOne Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 20:48

I wonder if Ghirahim is going to be in it, since there was no Ganondorf in the same art style as SS Link or Zelda, unless they do what they did with Sheik.

  35. AlecOfChaos Monday 2nd Jul 2012 at 21:14

Is it just me or was the original N64 smash bros not the best?

I feel like its now got too many characters, I believe that the Wii U Smash bros needs to simplify the character roster.

When will it stop 100, 200, 300 characters, if we carry on this way all the characters will all become clones of each other in some way of form.

The assists were a great idea and I say more of that, its keeps the characters original without having to copy each others move set.

I really hope they don't waste the opportunity to use namco bandai character in brawl.
Jin from Tekken would be amazing, as would some soulcalibur, dragonball and Tales 'characters.

  38. conn1496 Tuesday 3rd Jul 2012 at 02:48

I am OK with this. Infact, just as long as you don't go changing any movesets, or atleast providing original movesets, I'm OK. :D

Exactly, they aren't overpowered. The only character that is overpowered is Meta Knight. Kirby and Pit are only E tier.

  41. mtrd_hntr Tuesday 3rd Jul 2012 at 09:12

If by "change of direction" he means "making it like Kid Icarus multiplayer" I'll stick with Brawl, thanks.

  42. Xenobladeperson Tuesday 3rd Jul 2012 at 15:40

It would be nice to see Shulk, No-Specific-Action-Figure and maybe a few other join the roster. I can't believe Nintendo could deny us more characters.

  43. Gapa Tuesday 3rd Jul 2012 at 16:32

As long as there is still a decent number of characters, I'll be happy, because the range of characters that were in the other games meant that you could have so many different styles of play, I think that adding too many characters would mean that we would end up with too many characters that are all the same, it's far better with a smaller number of unique characters (this is just my opinion though).

  44. Cidiyance Tuesday 3rd Jul 2012 at 17:31

Awww... I was hoping for more characters...

But otherwise, I hope these futuristic features between 3DS and WiiU make up for it.

  45. Samster64 Wednesday 4th Jul 2012 at 00:23

well, i think as long as there are different characters, we'll all be happy. maybe include all the melee characters then fill up the rest of the slots with totally new characters. or have a new rule of thumb for a bit more variety and diversity: only have a maximum of two characters from each series. this would reduce the number of returning characters and also maximise the number of new comers. also: (this is just my opinion btw) don't include any classic stages, it not only makes the game feel more like a reboot rather than a sequel, but it makes the older game(s) feel more limited and not as unique and special. one last thing: paper mario stage!

  46. SkywardSaix Wednesday 4th Jul 2012 at 16:41

As long as Golden Sun characters get added >.<

Yes! We need Isaac, not as an assist trophy, but a fully playable character.

  47. peter_bread Sunday 8th Jul 2012 at 17:17

I don't think its that bad that there won't be MORE characters. It would be good if there were some different characters as opposed to the ones used now though

  48. enigma212 Thursday 12th Jul 2012 at 21:00

Hell, I thought 24 was more than enough when melee was released! Having 35 again is a blessing, so long as there's new faces.

  49. greycloud007 Sunday 15th Jul 2012 at 09:40

If they're goint to bring out new characters who may be considered as clones then at least release them as DLC.

This way players can choose if they want them in the roster without them initially taking up a place of another character.

  50. greycloud007 Sunday 15th Jul 2012 at 09:43

I really hope they don't waste the opportunity to use namco bandai character in brawl.
Jin from Tekken would be amazing, as would some soulcalibur, dragonball and Tales 'characters.

We might see some Tekken characters in the upcoming Playstation Vita 'smash bros' type game!
