How to get 1 million coins in New Super Mario Bros 2

Make Mario rich in his new platformer

Mario has to (surprise!) rescue Princess Peach in New Super Mario Bros 2 but for hardcore Mario fans the goal will be to get 1 million coins. For while saving Peach isn't that difficult, making your first million is tricky without some serious platforming skills in the new Coin Rush mode. Our guide will tell you how to get 1 million coins when New Super Mario Bros 2 is released tomorrow.

1. Get the Golden Flower

Coin Rush mode is the new mode designed for speed runners. In this mode you only have one life as you attempt to make it through three randomly selected stages in a bid to collect as many coins as possible.

The Golden Flower is your friend in Coin Rush mode as it helps you rack up a ridiculous high score. So make sure you take good care of it as with this power-up, everything from bricks to enemies turns into gold, meaning you get some serious cash as you head for the flag. We'd advise using it as soon as you start the first level as it will be taken away once you complete it.

You can also grab loads of coins if you replay levels which feature the Golden Flower. You can get a Golden Flower in World 2-1 if you head into the gold pipe after the checkpoint flag. The Golden Flower is in the first Question Mark block. This won't be carried into Coin Rush mode though.

Even if the reward for getting 1 million coins is a bit rubbish,I have a funny feeling getting to 1 million will be quite addicting.

No no no, ONM. Speed runners aim to, you guessed it, clear the level/game in the fastest time possible. The coins are a distraction, and are not necessary to get a good time. Because the emphasis of this mode is to collect as much gold as possible, it is not designed for speed runners. If it were, it would be called Time Trial, and would be completely different.

Thank you world for independent games shops. I bought NSMB2 & Sleeping Dogs on PS3 yesterday. Both with "official" release dates tomorrow. HMV, Gamestation etc must have their supply but due to "corporate responsibility" will not sell before the official release date.

If you are lucky enough to live in a town/city with an indy store check them out, almost every game I have bought over the last 5 years I have had at least 2 days before the release date.

Lego Batman 2 wins that one, released on a Friday, I had it on the Tuesday. :D

PS I am nowhere near 1,000,000 coins!!! :(
