Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS - 10 new characters who need to join the roster

Sakurai's enjoying making new skills for new characters but who could they be?

Eight words. That's all it took for Smash Bros fans around the world to get excited about a game that could be years off. Yes, this week Masahiro Sakurai privided the news that everyone wanted to hear when he said "it's fun making new skills for new characters."

After suggesting that the roster probably wouldn't expand beyond the level reached in Super Smash Bros Brawl, it's encouraging to hear that new characters will appear in the game even if it means that old favourites could be cut out.

So who could these new characters be? Well, Sakurai did provide a hint when he said that he was doing his best to bring old characters back to Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS. Is this what you want? We asked you to name the characters you'd like to see in the new Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS games and,as you can see, your list is a mix of the old and new.

10. Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western)

Dillon seems to have taken Limp Bizkit's 2000 hit Rollin as his raison d'ętre. Just keep rollin', rollin', rollin'; that's all he ever does. While it makes for a good way to take down Grocks, his move set seems a bit limited. Roll into bad guy, tap the screen and repeat. Special move: roll. Final Smash: Power roll.

Still, rolling with the stylus would work well on the Wii U and 3DS touchscreen and it would be nice to have an all-new Nintendo character in the ranks. After all, there aren't many new Nintendo characters to choose from.

It seems like a good idea at first, but when you think about it, Professor Layton is a terrible idea.

  2. mariojoe11 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:00

I said marx on facebook, but as a boss :)

  3. EviceTurboMan Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:00

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Ristar. He could easily work.

I agree! Unless someone can think of a good Final Smash. Anyone?

Not happening! One thing in common between all Smash Bros characters ever made (barring the likes of Mr Game & Watch - who seems to be there for comic relief anyway) is they're all fighters - as one would expect in a fighting game. Layton is a professor who goes around examining puzzles and stuff. I can't believe he even came up as a serious suggestion. What moves would you have in mind; hit people over the head with a book?!

The fact he can actually sword fight is beside the point just as being able to run doesn't make you an athlete. And so what if he can use a sword anyway? It's the most common weapon and we're already up to our ears in SB sword users.

But that's not to say he can't have a role-of-sorts in the game as an assist trophy or something...

Megaman though, yes he'd make a nice alternative to Pitt!

Ghirahim is my most wanted character for SSB4. His final smash could see him transform into the anti-master sword and slashing across the screen.

I was also thinking about Baby Mario and Baby Luigi appearing as a duo character, similar to that of Ice Climbers. They could possibly dig into the stage with their hammers and sneak up to enemies and then attack by digging up underneath them.

The Final Smash would be easy enough, just the basic attacks would be almost impossible and if you did manage to figure them all out, they would make Layton look weird and out of character.

Shulk would easily work, though. He's my most wanted for SSB4.

They're all pretty bad ideas. Though I would like to see them revamp Dr.Mario. They could really do stuff if they remade his moveset.

  9. linkfinity Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:08

Don't lie, Travis touchdown would be great. perhaps only as an assist trophy though

shulk needs to be in there (if only so sakurai has to but in few xenoblade stages, and who doesn't want to see yoshi drown in makana falls?)

the onm team would be great, imagine chandra standing in the background like the pokémon trainer and tossing his "minions" into the ring to get mutilated by jigglypuff.

they really need to get rid of some of the pokémon though, have pikachu and perhaps one more as playable, and they shove the rest into pokéballs, and then have done with it.

  10. TheBlazingApple Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:10

Skull Kid HAZ to be in the new SMB! :P
He's my favorite nintendo character, so yeah :P

Maybe for his final smash a giant puzzle comes on screen, if you don't manage to solve it before the player playing as Layton, you get dealt heavy damage, or become confused with the controls messing up completely, and if you do manage it you steal some of Laytons HP or something. adds a bit of risk to using it.

  12. EviceTurboMan Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:11

I wouldn't mind if they added Zoroark to the game.

His final smash could be transforming into a random character.

  13. link013 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:15

I agree! Unless someone can think of a good Final Smash. Anyone?
he could shout puzzeling questions causing all characters to have a mental breakdown

  14. TomMc92 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:21

I like the idea of Zoroark using it's illusion to transform into different Pokemon. Perhaps it could transform into mewtwo and even lucario, but also pikachu and jigglypuff. Transforming could be chance based meaning you could get a really good pokemon at one fight but in the next a really terribe one. As for professor laytons final smash he could make a massive puzzle appear on screen that everyone else has to slove with in a time limit, those who do it only take a bit of damage those who fail however are instantly pushed of the stage! I know there is a bit of balancing to be done there but it could work. Anyway im shocked you didn't mention little mac , but i am happy you put travis in there as he is someone i'd like to see in ssb4.

  15. shy guy 64 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:26

out of that list id say shulk and issac are the most likely

hades would make more sense as a boss, bowser jr is quite popular so he could happen

and more people want chibi-robo. takumaru, ridley and the balloon fighter than you think

  16. CyberGW Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:28

Is everybody forgetting that Layton is a fencer? Surely that's good enough for attacks.
And Hades, wow never thought of that. I'd be awesome though!

  17. Darkblizz Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:30

Travis would be a great addition. His filthy mouth and mind would have to be toned down though.

And Cloud could well be an option too. He's appeared on Nintendo consoles after all, both in Theatrhythm and Kingdom Hearts.

  18. skyluigi Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:30

If Zoroark is in the next Smash Bros. I'm not even going to play it... I hate the thing.
On a lighter note, Professor Layton would be really awesome!

  19. BlkDragonEmala Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:31

I agree, having Zoroark would be an interesting addition, due to its illusions and stuff, which would make it a formidable foe ^^

Although, one person they definitely HAVE to add is Terumoto from Samurai Warriors 3 :') Although, if I HAD to choose someone from that game who was a main playable officer, I'd go with Motonari ^^ I could see his final smash being his Ultimate Musou attack, it would be epic having arrows raining down on the battlefield ^^ And possibly Motochika... I don't think I've seen a main character in Smash Bros. use a Guitar as their weapon yet... So that'd be an amusing addition ^^

  20. tomonm Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 15:40

    Sold.

For those of you who say Layton isn't a fighter, neither is Olimar, but they managed to fit him in. Here's how I envisage his moves.

Special - Throw picarats (Similar to Sheik's special)
Special Side - Laytonmobile (Similar to Wario's special side)
Special Up - Jumps, hovers down with propellers in his hat
Special Down - Charges up Slot Machine Gun
Final Smash - Cutscene when puzzle answer has been submitted in the background. On the final 'point' frame, there are explosions everywhere.

Also, I think that the Inazuma Eleven series deserves a character or two.

Note: Inazuma Eleven and Inazuma Eleven GO technique spoilers!

    Mark Evans

Special - God Hand (Smashes nearest opponent with God Hand)
Special Side - Fist of Justice (Sends Fist of Justice projectile flying)
Special Up - Hammer of Wrath (Functions like Ike's Special Up, Aether)
Special Down - Ijigen the Hand (Functions like Lucario and Ike's 'retaliation' Special Down)
Final Smash - Majin Great (Functions like R.O.B's Final Smash)

    Matsukaze Tenma

Moves function identically to Mark Evans' corresponding moves

    Special - Soyokaze Step
    Special Side - Mach Wind
    Special Up - Spiral Draw
    Special Down - Aggressive Beat
Final Smash - Majin Pegasus Arc

  22. DarkBladeXIII Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:13

i could see Shadow the Hedgehog being an effective character and not just as a Sonic clone. With moves like chaos spear, chaos control, eve his unique shoes could all be used in his moveset. he has a punch-punch-kick combo from shadow the hedgehog game (yeah ok so its like sonics basic A attack :P) but cmon he use a chaos spear instead of the spin dash smash attack and his final smash would be super shadow but being able to release charged chaos spears, while performing chaos control. admit it there's bags of potential in Shadow really.

  23. shadowlugia101 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:19

a lot of these would fit quite well with the next game (but not layton) it would be cool to see magnus and skull kid join the fight and ghirhiam is my favorite Zelda villain, i still also believe the Leon polowski from star fox would be cool.

  24. Skywardwolf23 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:21

Layton? In Brawl? The day that happens i'll eat leather hats :!:

  25. shadowlugia101 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:23

i also think it would be cool to have your mii as a fighter, it's final smash could be summon thousands of miis to push you off the stage, however, the more miis you meet via streetpass or miiverse, the more miis will appear to push your foes off the stage.

  26. OrangeRakoon Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:29

I would absolutely love Skull Kid and Klonoa out of these. Klonoa fits in so well with Kirby, what with them both being dream warriors, and I find the idea of Klonoa using his ring to inflate all the other characters into round balloons before using them to double jump or as weapons as hilarious.

  27. Minitreadell Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:31

They should put young link back in and he could be like the young link from majora's mask and his final smash being the fierce deity Mask

  28. LavaTwilight Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:48

Wow I had never even thought of SkullKid before but now that you mention it, he WOULD be AWESOME in the next SSB! On the Pokemon note, although I don't play them, I do like seeing the diffierent ones in SSB so more pokeballs would be kool. New playable Pokemon should be done though. In Melee was Mewtwo and Pichu, Brawl had the Trainer and Lucario, we should get two new ones again and not recycle the old Pokemon... return them to their pokeballs!

  29. benandarchie Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 16:50

I don't think mario characters are good for smash bros.

Layton divides by 0 BWARGH world explodes everyone takes mass damage because their brains cannot handle his genious

  31. SuperNintyFan333 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 17:00

I think that Girahim, megaman, Hades, Zoroak and Rundas should be the new characters

    I was thinking the other day about Zelda characters in SSB4, and I reckon it's obvious Toon Link is coming out of the roster- Then I thought about Majora's Mask and how Sakurai said he's bringing back old characters, one then I thought of a mask to be in SSB4, and Deku Link came to my mind for a fighter, think of this;

    (B) Deku Bubble
(B>) Spin Attack (The attack used with the A button)
(B\/) Deku Shield (The shield used as Deku Link)
(B^) Deku Flower Jump Thing (Jumps into the air as if popping out of a Deku Flower, then pulls out the flowers and glides down)

    Thoughts?

  34. Tazer_Silverscar Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 17:17

Anyone forgotten Skyward Sword's Demise? If we kick out Bowser or Ganondorf as a character, he'd be a great replacement.

Normal 'A' moves could involve Demise's Anti-Master Sword, B moves are various dark magic projectiles. Smash moves can be:

Smash Up - Localised Lightning Strike (strikes to the left and right of him, like Pikachu's Thunder, but covers sightly more area - above/below him would be safe.
Smash Down - Electical Ground Smash, like Donkey Kong's Ground Pound, but stuns and deals minor damage instead of sending them flying, and only hits once unlike DK's, which can be infinite.
Smash Side - Heavy slash with Anti-Master Sword, like Ness's Home Run, but slower and electrical to deal more damage.
Final Smash - Similar to Bowser's Giga Bowser, only slower with even more power. Resembles Demise's Ascended Forbidden Beast Form (the giant scaled beast with wings and a halo). I suggest this because Ganondorf's Final Smash was rubbish.

  35. SonyX Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 17:41

Skull Kid HAZ to be in the new SMB! :P
He's my favorite nintendo character, so yeah :P

shulk kid in the next super mario bros, don't know about that but mabey the next super smash bros

  36. Fubz Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 17:57

My reaction when reading the section on Ghirahim... THAT THING'S A GUY????

  37. Redfish20 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 18:00

    Girahim's final smash:
He turns into the dark sword (or whatever it's called) then Demise appears on screen an grabs him. The player playing as Girahim now controls Demise for a short period of time.

Also before this happens he loudly announces his intention to make the other player's ears bleed with the sound of their own screams! Maybe.

  38. Herbert_Rarr Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 18:19

As much as I would love to play as Shadow in SSB, I don't think he belongs as a playable character. You could mix up his move-set enough so as to not make him the same as Sonic, but at the end of the day, all you would have is an overpowered Sonic clone.
I'm a huge Sonic fan, but I think that one character from the series is enough if the roster is going to be the same size as Brawl's.

  39. laytonluke911 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 18:20

Girahim's final smash should be him transforming into a sword and then the player makes a swipe across the touch screen, damaging all enemies in the drawn path.

  40. AwesomeAddict Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 19:07

I think Maxwell from Scribblenauts could join the battle. He'd have his magic notebook and he'd be able to summon anything. His final smash would be writing something on his notebook.

  41. GoldenSun Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 19:29

    Not Isaac- Felix or Alex.

Felix is quite cool, and yes, even though he does not feature as much as Isaac did in the series, he was still the protaganist of the 2nd game and was (in my opinion) even cooler then Isaac.

And Alex coz he does not use swords, and can teleport and can use powerful psenergy (So strong it can knock adepts to the ground). How cool would it be to actually fight AS him??

  42. Meta Kyurem Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 20:26

Gold Mario is a pretty good idea. His Final Smash could be turning the stage into coins so the players will fall! Toad should be in because he never gets a chance in the spotlight (Ahem... Mario). His Final Smash could be he gets a cannon and shoots items at the players to kill them!

  43. Samster296 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 21:00

I think Krystal would have been a good character. She could use her Staff from Adventures. Ghirahim would be a good character, his final smash could be when he turns into that metallic skin mode he uses in Skyward Sword.

  44. ZodiacXYZ Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 21:11

That top 10 list I agree with whole-heartedly...granted Sakurai could do a better job with Prof. Layton than Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 did with Pheonix Wright.

And I am confident that the 1 vote you got for Zack from Zack & Wiki was me. And may I say thank you for the recognition.

  45. Nelsonator15 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 21:20

For the record, I was the person who voted for Yarn Kirby. :D Think about it, he could use all the different transformations he has in Kirby's Epic Yarn, making him a completely different fighter to regular Kirby. He could use the Yarn Whip for regular attacks, the Car form as a dash, his Snake form or Off-Roader form as a Side-B, his Rocket form for a recovery move...a lot of possibilities.

I reckon his Final Smash would be either the Tankbot form (probably the more obvious choice) or his Saucer form (which imo is more practical), where he could take in 3 objects/enemies and then loose a blast that sends opponents flying off the screen! :D

I could perhaps understand if Yarn Kirby didn't make the cut though, since the Kirby series already has 3 playable characters and Knuckle Joe as an assist trophy. Still, a neat idea, no? ;)

  46. TheNessInator Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 21:53

ten new characters eh? I'll give you ten. (not in order)
    1. Emmy - Professor Layton
    2. Jeff/Claus - EarthBound/Mother 3
    3. Raphael - Rhythm Thief and the Emperors Treasure
    4. Spyro - Spyro the dragon
    5. Rayman - Rayman
    6. Miles "tails" Prower - Sonic 2
    7. Amaterasu - Okami
    8. Scaler - Scaler
    9. Mr. Resitti - Animal Crossing
    10. Yarn Kirby - Kirbys epic yarn

Yes! Someone else wants Yarn Kirby, excellent. Amaterasu would be great as well, though, what with all the divine instruments and brush techniques. :)

  48. Crisps Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 22:18

It's the same Skull Kid in both games. Easy mistake to make, I suppose.

  49. Demon Bowler Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 22:36

Yes to professor Layton I have always wanted him in a fighting game.

He has some cool stages and music.
His victory celebration would be him pointing smelling saying a quote like "critical thinking is key to a success"
His failing stance would be him with his hat covering his eyes and saying a quote like "how could this have happened"
He enters the stage using the Laytonmobile
His idle moves or taunts would be him doing a puzzle on a piece of paper, readjusting his hat and drink tea.

The alternate costumes would be young Layton with the Afro(miracle mask), young Layton wearing a baseball hat(lost future) and future "Layton" (lost future)

The normal would be sword moves maybe spilling tea or hitting people with the Laytonmobile like someone commented previously. His specials would be
Special. Hint coin throw (like mario's fireball)
Special ^. Create flying machine from curious village and is launched upwards in a cloud of smoke and is able to glide for a limited time.
Special >. Brings out slot machine gun and is used similar to the brawl weapon bazooka
Special down. Takes out the Elysian box from pandora's box and would create a shield for Layton and confuse nearby fighters.

Final smash. Similar to the warioware stage but instead a puzzle if the opponents stand in the correct place or hit the correct object the survive with little damage if not solved or not in the right place the stage turns on you and causes lots of damage eg find the right cog if you are in the right column with the correct cog you survive or get a power up if you are in the wrong column you are squashed by the cog.

My ideas for Luke are his normal moves would be swinging his bag, kicking and throwing books at people or hitting them with his violin :)
His specials would revolve around his pet animals eg the parrot from lost future would carry him upwards. The dog from curious village would create almost a protective shield and the hamster from elysian box would be thrown at enemies and keep walking similar to munchlax in Brawl. The final smash would be an animal puzzle.

Those are my ideas and I really hope prof Layton makes it to the next SSB. Thanks for reading

  50. LBDNytetrayn Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 22:55

I like several of the ones not many people were interested in, actually. Well, Magnus and Shadow, at least... maybe Balloon Fighter as an assist trophy?

As for Bowser Jr., intriguing ideas. My initial impulse would be to make him the Young Link to Bower's Link, so to speak: a smaller, faster version with less power, but can perhaps conjure up a Koopa Shell at will.

Regarding Mega Man... funny that it sounds like you're talking about the original Mega Man, but show a picture of Mega Man X; quite a bit of difference between each Mega Man, and then there's the question of which one is best for this? I think Classic is, personally.

Also, his charged Mega Buster would probably outdo Samus' Charge Beam... assuming we amped his up as much as Samus did hers for Smash Bros. (those blasts weren't that big in Super Metroid).

  51. 9 Times Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 23:21

    Hades?...yet...NO....MAGNUUUUS!!!
Magnus would be perfect for smash bros!
    1.He would avoid spoilers
    2.He isn't 5,000 ft tall
    3.He has an awesome sword
    4.He's more agile

I like the skull kid idea though.

  52. Emmanuel900 Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012 at 23:50

Paper Mario!! In the game!!! like toon link but paper and mario!!!

  53. jonnyjazz Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 02:01

I think they should focus on adding characters whose games are already featured in Smash Bros, I'd rather see them for example adding some F-Zero characters (Samurai Goroh would be incredible in my opinion), maybe throw in a Kid Icarus or Metroid character and then a few of the Xenoblade characters (Shulk seems a given really). But I think if they're going to make a better story mode for these games then rather than spreading it out loads of tons of franchises they would be better focusing on the ones they are already using and expand on them really (and put a bit more effort into some of the movesets).

If they do decide to include any Namco characters though I really hope they go with Siegfried from Soulcaliber (or Voldo for a laugh), but they were in that rubbish Wii game a few years ago so fingers crossed Sakurai might include them.

  54. TaleOfTheToaster Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 07:15

Some Smash Bros. features on this website get totally out of hand, but this one was fair, just barring Layton and Skull Kid. I don't think Dillon will make it either, but he's at least a fair choice.

Skull Kid was only in one game, and this was released 12 years ago. The same may apply for Geno, but he at least had a permanent impact on the Mario World. Skull Kid almost made a mess of one town and then disappeared. Zelda has more suitable choices, the main one being Toon Zelda. Ghirahim would be fun, but he has his flaws in terms of Skyward Sword's story. Toon Zelda can turn into Tetra or a Phantom.

If Layton was made 100% by Nintendo, he could appear as an assist trophy, but being a Level 5 character, I don't expect any role whatsoever. Yes, he's decent at fencing, but that doesn't constitute an A button combo, side tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, up smash, side smash, down smash, ledge attack, get-up attack, neutral air, forward air, up air, down air, pummel, up throw, forward throw, back throw, down throw, B, Side B, Up B, Down B and Final Smash, now does it? It at least won't if you're trying to keep Layton unique.

Smash Bros. has a good variety of swordsmen anyway, and giving Layton such a weapon is just scrounging at the bottom of the barrel to try and get him in there.

  55. hazzamadazzla Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 08:24

Just give Layton the sword from Pandora's Box and have really good agility to dart around the stage with as his Final Smash and let him brawl with his fists normally. I don't really care that it's a fairly flimsy solution, so many people want to see Layton in there, it would just be such a crowd pleaser anyway. Also, don't just have Shulk, have Dunban aswell, he's my favourite character in Xenoblade, a great fighter and must be included. I also think Hades is an excellent idea and why not Palutena aswell?

  56. TheAwkwardDancer Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 09:27

I think Maxwell from Scribblenauts could join the battle. He'd have his magic notebook and he'd be able to summon anything. His final smash would be writing something on his notebook.

    This.

  57. Dan-the-Wii-man Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 09:49

PAPER MARIO why is he never on anyone's list!! He would be such a good characters with his paper abilities used to glide and dodge. He could also use his hammer generally, and have a giant fan or scissors like in his new game for a final smash!! Anyway... Ghirahim would be SUCH a good character!

  58. noodle link Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 09:55

Suda himself stated that he wanted Travis Touchdown in the new Smash Bros. So yeah, him.

Also, I think Hades would work brilliantly as a boss character... But terribly as a playable one. Magnus would make a better fighter to take the helm of.

  59. SonyX Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 09:56

ten new characters eh? I'll give you ten. (not in order)
    1. Emmy - Professor Layton
    2. Jeff/Claus - EarthBound/Mother 3
    3. Raphael - Rhythm Thief and the Emperors Treasure
    4. Spyro - Spyro the dragon
    5. Rayman - Rayman
    6. Miles "tails" Prower - Sonic 2
    7. Amaterasu - Okami
    8. Scaler - Scaler
    9. Mr. Resitti - Animal Crossing
    10. Yarn Kirby - Kirbys epic yarn

Yes! Someone else wants Yarn Kirby, excellent. Amaterasu would be great as well, though, what with all the divine instruments and brush techniques. :)

i don't think we should have things like kirby and yarn kirby or mario and paper mario, but how about customisable movesets where you could choose different power ups for mario or different weapons for link or different copie abilities for kirby or different attacks for pokemon.the list goes on :)

Something I'd quite like to see developed further is how each character's art style is brought into the game. Having Toon Links cel-shaded-ness was really cool alongside the more normal looking characters. If Layton were in there it would be cool for him to remain as a hand drawn cartoon like in the cutscenes that would be really cool.

  61. K-tet Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 10:56

Now Zoroark would be logical given its ability: Illusion, but I actually think Meloetta would be a better inclusion due to her Forme Change (in much the same way Zelda changes to Sheik, that would work). However, I wouldn't be disappointed given that Pikachu will most definitely be in the game, so having any kind of support will be welcomed. Either Zoroark or Meloetta would work as actual characters or PokéBall supports. If this is based on popularity in Japan, Meloetta will get the nod (as she's extremely popular). As for the others:

1: Clearly Layton's the one everyone wants, so Sakurai should throw him in.
2: Megaman would be a great inclusion too, but I'd still stick by my opinion that if you want a Capcom character, Ryu's your best bet. Personal preference only and I know not everyone agrees. If not Ryu, everyone wants Phoenix Wright. In fact if Layton does go in, then Phoenix Wright is a must. Yes they're getting their own crossover game, but that's even more of a reason to promote it further.
3: Namco-wise, I'd go in the direction of Tales and pick a character from there rather than say Tekken. If Sakurai wants to bring back the 'classics', then look to Tales of Phantasia and get Cress involved. After all, ToP was released on the SFC back in 1995. I would laugh if they stuck a Digimon in to go with the whole Pokémon VS Digimon argument. If they do, either Agumon (Adventure or Savers, either one) or Shoutmon (Xros Wars) would work perfectly.
4: Bowser Jr would also work, so no qualms there. Logical inclusion given Bowser, and of course following suit with Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong in Brawl.
5: I called for Dillon as he's Nintendo's new IP, and his inclusion would springboard his popularity to greater heights.
6: Hades wouldn't work unless he was an Assist Trophy. Magnus on the other hand would as he would fit the mould better, so no to Hades.
7: Issac would also work however the last thing Smash needs is an over-saturation of characters with swords (it would in effect break the balance). A true Golden Sun reference would be great. Perhaps you could swap a Fire Emblem character for Issac.
8: Shulk might work. I've never played Xenoblade Chronicles (yes I know, hush) but given the description, could work very well.
9: If Ghirahim is to be included, Ganondorf has to go. That's my opinion, but it's as simple as that if I'm honest. Of course, if you have Ghirahim, then where do you place Skull Kid? Probably in the same ilk as Ganondorf, a non-combatant. Maybe I shouldn't have done that... *shrugs*

For my tuppence though, if Sakurai's going to bring back the 'classics', then his Third-Party choices (if any) need to be very few, and should have appeared on either the NES/FC or SNES/SFC. That's how I'd do it if I were Sakurai. Perhaps make them modern so that they are more suited to today, but go for a 'classic' that did appear on one of those retro systems. If I were Sakurai, Bomberman would be in. Why? Rose to fame through the SFC, and Bomberman 64 is widely regarded as one of the all-time best Bomberman games. Plus as a tribute to Hudson helping Nintendo with the Mario Party games and Super Mario Bros. Special on the PC-88, no brainer for me.

  62. Samster64 Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 16:47

Balloon Fighter only got one vote?
    Why?
    He'd be AWESOME!
Walking around then using his balloons like those toys that you get which are pretty big balloons on rubber bands, that you punch. BAM!
If he isn't playable, then there NEEDS to be a balloon fighter stage.

If a company's games can have underdogs, then Balloon Fighter is Nintendo's

  63. PokerusZero Thursday 23rd Aug 2012 at 21:55

Come on Nintendo, please put Hades and Dillion in Smash Bros. It would be AMAZING! :D

  64. DynamicPunch202 Friday 24th Aug 2012 at 09:45

I can imagine Zoroark being in it, he'll be a replacement for Lucario. I think Giriham and Megaman would be nice editions. Hades would make a great boss in the single player mode, but he's way too tall to be a character (he would never fit on the stage!). Also, Layton doesn't seem like a fighter and I can't help thinking he would look out of place in a fighting game.I suppose he would make a good assist trophy, if that's good enough for Layton fans.

One character that I think would work that no one voted for (which i'm very annoyed about  ) is Golurk. I even thought up his possible moveset:

Standard Special: DynamicPunch (like Falcon Punch)
    Side special: Shadow Punch
    Up special: Fly
    Down special: Earthquake

    Final Smash: Focus Punch

I'm sure he'd be a great character, plus he'd be the tallest guy there (and slowest for that matter! )

  65. HydroWight Friday 24th Aug 2012 at 14:22

    Shadow would be cool!

  66. MagicMan5 Friday 24th Aug 2012 at 14:55

If there's anything I don't want, it's third party characters. Smash should be for nintendo characters only. I'd much rather have toad then megaman.

  67. GloverMist Friday 24th Aug 2012 at 15:05

Come on, think about it, Yarn Kirby (or at least Prince Fluff so as not to have more than one Kirby) would be epic! The yarn whip could wrap up enemies for you to throw. Transforming into a car would work for the side special, and the Final Smash? The Tankbot, obviously!
Can anyone think of other moves?

  68. Nelsonator15 Friday 24th Aug 2012 at 18:55

I can see why the Tankbot seems like the most obvious Final Smash for him, but practically I don't think it'd work. I just imagine it to be an inferior version of the Starfox characters' Landmasters with fewer abilities. That's why I reckon the Saucer is a better choice, for the reasons I mentioned before. :)

As for more of his moves, here are some of my ideas:

    Dash - Car
'A' attacks (ground and air) and 'Z' Grabs/Throws - Yarn Whip (also used for grabbing ledges). Also, his forward throw could be the Top form (where he picks up something and can carry/throw it, Donkey Kong-style).
Standard B - Fire Engine (hold down to spray water forward). I know its controls will be limited due to the lack of motion control but it'd still be cool to have this form. :)
Side B - Snake (swift horizontal movement)/Off-Roader (maybe similar to Wario's bike)
Up B - Rocket (maybe similar to Diddy Kong's Up B but upon termination it could become the Parachute)
    Down B - Weight
    Final Smash - Saucer

He could also become the Dolphin when in water, which I reckon would be cooler than the Submarine. :D

I think it'd be fine to have Yarn Kirby himself in the game, but Prince Fluff should be an alternate costume. ;)

  69. Alaxtis Saturday 25th Aug 2012 at 11:09

Layton should be armed with a rapier or logical power!!!!! :D

    Replace Jigglypuff. Please.

  70. MarioMayhem Saturday 25th Aug 2012 at 16:55

I seriously think that there should be an emphasis on first-party characters, like more ones from Zelda, for example some bosses from the best games, Mario, like (in support of Luigi's Mansion 2) King Boo could be a character. I just think that there are enough swordsmen, enough Pokemon, and definitely enough second-party and third-party characters. I'm not a massive fan of those extreme JRPGs, so I don't want to have to play with a bunch of freaky-haired children running around with massive swords, big shoes and weird outfits. People who really believe that you will be able to play as common enemies from games in the next Super Smash Bros game have got to remember that the vast majority of SSB playable characters have been main characters, so it's very unlikely - the most the common characters have got is trophy assists. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

  71. wghtmf Sunday 26th Aug 2012 at 07:27

I agree with Balloon Fighter. I'd also like to see De Blob.

  72. RaidingRaichu Sunday 26th Aug 2012 at 11:01

    How would Layton fight? Really?
How about Petey Pirahna, Midna, Dillon or King Boo?
Although I love Fire Emblem, Golden Sun etc. all the sword-wielding characters fight the same! How about one of the more heavily armoured characters like a Knight with a lance or something?

And do away with Link AND Toon Link. Although I enjoyed the different art style of Windwaker etc. I don't think it justified a character. What about others from the Zelda franchise? A Phantom from the DS games? Skull Kid as mentioned in the article? So many better ideas!

  73. Pyron12 Sunday 26th Aug 2012 at 13:07

Why didn't Jin Kazama from Tekken series get a vote? His Final Smash could be transforming into Devil Jin from Blood Vengance and cause chaos similar to Dragon Yoshi.

  74. oyster18 Sunday 26th Aug 2012 at 13:41

Ok here's the deal. What if we had the deku scrub link, zora link and goron link as seen in majora's mask, with the same pattern as pokemon trainer where you press down and B to put on a different mask. Deku scrub link could be like squirtle nimble but weak, zora link like ivysaur, kind of an all round good fighter, and goron link can be slow but powerful like charizard. As a final smash they could put on the fierce deity mask and become fierce deity link and be super powerful. I think that would be epic.

  75. LavaTwilight Sunday 26th Aug 2012 at 18:36

I agree! It was young Link in Melee and Toon Link in Brawl... when you consider they have pretty much the exact moves as regular Link it's just a waste of effort. I don't mind them keeping the same number of characters but they should definitely do away with clones and be more innovative with the characters moves.

  76. RainbowNinja7x Sunday 26th Aug 2012 at 19:00

They should all get more game specific moves that only characters of that series can use, like Mario, Luigi, Peach and the like could have penguin suits, ice flower suits, bee suits, the propellor suit to get back onto the platform... that sort of thing. As for the other characters...?

  77. Tailzy Saturday 1st Sep 2012 at 14:01

King boo, Shadow, Zoroark and Layton are all horrible choices

  78. IG-42 Saturday 1st Sep 2012 at 17:09

i don't see Amaterasu on this list!!!

  79. VinceLovesToast Saturday 1st Sep 2012 at 17:17

I love Lucario but i think zoroark will replace him i also think pikachu should have his pokepark 2 moveset it was so bad i never chose him in brawl, there is other things too like new pokemon for the pokemon trainer and pikachu being able to switch out to his pokepark 2 counter parts

  80. VinceLovesToast Saturday 1st Sep 2012 at 18:00

I love him too if u watch pokemon movie 14 his legs can disappear and and he looks like a jet pack i can imagine him flying like that.
+ instead of different colours should be a different pokemon mario could be gold mario and metal mario link into toon link making room for new zelda enemy and also let us pick miis

  81. KoopaConcious Sunday 2nd Sep 2012 at 18:52

I would love to see Darunia from Ocarina of time, and his final smash could be his crazy dance to Saria's song, which confuses all of the enemies and makes them fall off the stage... :)

  82. KoopaConcious Sunday 2nd Sep 2012 at 19:00

agreed, and the new games should have link in the skyward sword art style, with thee skyward sword instead of the master sword maybe. :)

I would love too see skull kid, and Link as the skyward sword design :D

  86. Balderz Monday 17th Sep 2012 at 17:48

I'm going to be honest here, I'm going to say something reckless, and a lot of people are going to hate me for it.

I think Shadow the Hedgehog would be good in the next Smash Bros. <sees oncoming mob> WAIT HEAR ME OUT!

I would strive to make him different from Sonic by making his special moves actually different from one another
(B-Side = B-Down for Sonic - want to avoid that for Shadow). My idea for his specials would be:

B: Homing attack (Kinda have to really - every game Shadow has been in, he's had this)
    B-Side: Chaos Spear
    B-Up: Chaos Control
    B-Down: Chaos Blast

Also, in a similar fashion to R.O.B, his Chaos powers would get stronger if he leaves them time to recharge. For this example, we'll use Chaos Blast; when the tank is empty, it doesn't work, at low charge, its power is similar to Link's bombs, and medium strength, more like a Bob-Omb blast, and at full power, it'd be like Electrode going off (Shadow remains unharmed at all time though (unless attacked during execution of move)).

For his Final Smash, he would go Super Saiy- sorry, couldn't resist - Super Shadow, but it would function A LOT differently to Sonic's Final Smash. Rather than speeding (haphazardly) around the stage, he would be reduced to a strong lumber (think speed of Bowser), causing a little bit (5%) damage to any who touch him. He would also be able to (or eventually have to) deploy a Chaos move at MUCH greater strength than usual - Chaos Blast would become more like a Smart Bomb (if not a bit stronger), Chaos Spear would release a volley of spears at any and all players on the field, and Chaos Control would freeze (not the icy kind) everything that isn't Shadow, leaving him a small amount of time (10-15 seconds) to start attacking the other player(s), and all damage would take effect at the same time as the Chaos control wears off. NB: After his Final Smash, Chaos power charge level would fall to 0.

Also, a couple more ideas I just had, his up Smash attack would be a back-flip kick, using his jet boots to cause fire damage, and when he tries to use Chaos Control with no 'Chaos Charge' (for lack of a better term for now), it fails, so he just uses his jet shoes for a third jump - this would still cause him to go dead in the air like when (almost) anyone else uses B-up moves.

Well, that's all I have right now - what does the mob think?

  87. Balderz Monday 17th Sep 2012 at 21:58

Right, new comment, sorta new topic.

I've seen the Mii idea floating around here, but I think that Miis would be perfect as a personalized character - someone that you can set moves for yourself.

It would work something like this: you'd have a set amount of points, and all the moves of the other characters (plus maybe a few Mii-only moves) would be on offer at varying costs. You'd then have to fill out a move-set (note well the term HAVE - no empty move commands) by , surprise surprise, buying moves with points and adding them to your Mii. However, you'd also have to spend points to change the Mii's speed, jump height (or maybe jump count if you want to be like Kirby) and weight, so you'd either have to be a slow powerhouse, buying plenty of good moves, but skimping out on the ability to move, strike a balance with semi-powerful moves, but able to move about fairly well, or become a nimble warrior that hits like the Fan, relying on multiple hits/other players etc to get the knockouts.

It'd be perfect - a character made by you, for you.

  88. Balderz Friday 5th Oct 2012 at 15:30

I refuse to let this topic die - MOAR IDEAS!

I believe this idea was mentioned in the magazine, but I personally have also had it for some time now (not trying to steal the guy's thunder or anything). I think that there should be a weapon inventory (or something to that effect) for each character. I got the idea from Team Fortress 2 (online shooter made by Valve for those who don't know), with items that were not all necessarily upgrades, but rather 'sidegrades' - with pros and cons compared to the stock weapons. For example, Link could have something like the Ordon Sword as his base weapon. Now, the Master Sword would be a clear upgrade to this, but something like the Big-Goron Sword would be a side-grade; the BG-sword would be the most powerful, but it would also be the slowest, and because of it being two-handed, Link wouldn't have his shield (which can sometimes block attacks).

On that topic, characters who would normally have shields of their own can swap them in for main shield usage, so Link (for example again) could use the Hylian/Mirror shield instead of the 'bubble' shield that everyone has (as for stats of the shields, one way protection only, but with no time constraint and much more resilient than the bubble, with the mirror trading some of the extra resilience to reflect energy-based projectiles (ray guns would go backwards, bob-ombs would still go off)).

And for the Pokemon trainer, why not let him change his roster? He could mix it up with an all water/grass/fire(/other type?) team, or keep a different mix an match to the original Suirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard.

I have more, but that's all I say for now - I'll let you come up with some ideas 8)

It's dead, isn't it Mr. East?

  90. Nintendalek42 Wednesday 14th Nov 2012 at 13:50

I really want to see Hades, Girahim, Layton, Megaman and Zoroark in game. I also really want to see Petey Piranha, especially as he was suggested here: http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co. ... uld-fight/

I disagree with those who say Layton doesn't belong in Smash Bros. I think he could easily be a fun character.
The justification for Zoroark appearing (I'd bet he will) is so much easier than ONM's "he's cool". Lucario was one the first emblematic pokemon revealed for Diamond and Pearl, Zoroark was the first for Black and White, and their body shapes match. Besides, how cool would it be to use Illusion to make people think you're another character?
I hope Miis are playable, that would be tons of fun.

  91. BrychanCymru Wednesday 14th Nov 2012 at 17:02

    Shy Guy Anyone
    Yarn Kirby
    Paper Mario
    Characters with different costumes ?????

  92. Giygas Monday 26th Nov 2012 at 23:48

I would love to see giygas as a boss character. We already saw proky, giygas could work fine.

  93. DragonEleven Tuesday 11th Jun 2013 at 09:34

I would like to see all of those characters in the gameplay in some form, but some of them shouldn't be on the roster itself.

Dillon - too limited move set... assist trophy at best.
Hades - could be pretty cool, as long as they don't make him overpowered.
Isaac - definitely a consideration for being promoted to playable.
Megaman - his Master thing could be an interesting mechanic, but not sure how well it would work in practice... should at least be an assist trophy.
Bowser Jr. - not too sure how much he'd be all that good playable... would make a good assist though.
Shulk - yes, definitely... his final smash could call in two of the other characters and have them do a chain attack, using button press timing to increase duration.
Zoroark - illusion could be interesting... and could work well as an assist trophy or a playable character.
Ghirahim - I think he'd be best as a boss for the story mode... possibly an assist trophy, but not a playable character.
Skull Kid - don't think he's cut out to be playable, but would make a decent assist.
Layton - assist trophy, not playable... maybe even included in a stage, popping up to ask questions in a similar manner to the Warioware one in Brawl.

As for the list of characters at the end... assist trophies, bosses and just general background stuff only... nothing more than that for the time being.
