5 amazing new Mario facts

Five fresh facts you might not have known about

More Mario facts? It was only a few months ago that our resident Nintendo fact finder Zabba treated you with 11 amazing Mario facts and secrets, many of which you may not have known. But now we have more facts direct from Shigeru Miyamoto himself who has revealed more about Mario's hair colour, his last name and the Koopalings. Read on to add to your Mushroom Kingdom knowledge.

1. The myth of Mario and Luigi's surnames

What are Mario and Luigi's surnames? It's a question that's been discussed for nearly 20 years. Ever since the Super Mario Bros film when Mario and Luigi - played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo get arrested and are asked to give their surname. What followed was a piece of cinema history. Maybe...

Sergeant Simon: Name. Mario: Mario.

Sergeant Simon: Last name.

Mario: Mario.

Sergeant Simon: And you?

Luigi: Luigi.

Sergeant Simon: Luigi Luigi?

Luigi: No, Luigi Mario.

Sergeant Simon: Okay how many Marios are there between the two of you?

Luigi: Three: Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

No wonder Bob Hoskins said that the Super Mario Bros film is the worst thing he has ever done. It's factually incorrect for starters as Miyamoto has told Game Informer that Mario and Luigi definitely do not have surnames.

Good job too. Mario Mario is stupid.

However, Mario could have had a surname as Miyamoto's initial name for him was Mr Video. In which case the debate might have been what is Mr Video's first name. Unlikely as Miyamoto has himself said that Mario would have probably "disappeared off the face of the Earth."

Just think about all those classic Mario games that would have never existed. No Super Mario Bros, no Super Mario World, no Super Mario Galaxy. We can only think of one person who would be happy about that and his name is Bob.

It's never about what the ending is for number 5. It's about how you get there. That's always been my Mario philosophy.

Now imagining Tom with a ginger beard. Hilarity ensues.

Done a little research-I think that I'm right in saying that the actual count is twenty-two Peach kidnappings. The list I managed to gather is (and no, these aren't all games):
    - Super Mario Bros
    - Super Mario Bros 3
    - Super Mario World
    - Super Mario 64
    - Paper Mario
    - Super Mario Sunshine
    - New Super Mario Bros.
    - Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
    - Super Mario Galaxy
    - Super Mario Galaxy 2
    - New Super Mario Bros 2
    - New Super Mario Bros U
    - Super Smash Brothers Brawl (If you choose to rescue Zelda)
    - Yoshi's Island DS (as Baby Peach)
    - Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels (yes, it's a seperate game, it counts)
    - Super Mario 3D Land
    - Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!
    - Super Mario's anime
    - Super Mario Adventures
    - Hotel Mario
    - Super Mario RPG (briefly)
    - Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (technically)

That's a very good point there.

I particularly liked having that koopa kid confusion cleared up, which is fun to say.

You forgot the first NSMB and Paper Mario 2 (I think). Also, Hotel Mario doesn't count since it's CD-i, none of those games were actually made by Nintendo, and including the cartoons is irrelevant as well imo.

Now that you mention it, that kinda makes me think. So what is the big deal about that Nintendo? :?

    1) I don't see the problem with them having a last name.

    2) It did not originate in the movie; it originated in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!.

Someone better tell Charles Martinet about Mario's non-existent surname. (Yes, I know the vid's not meant to be taken seriously. :P)

Also that stuff about the Koopalings is a heck of a change. Clearly, the stories are all made up as they go along.

That makes complete sense (and so will this ) ! Usually when you call two brothers 'The X Brothers' X would be whatever their surname is so their full names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

'We don't know who the mother is?' You're not telling me that all that 'Mama' business in Sunshine was just lies made by Bowser to get Bowser jr. to kidnap Peach!

The amount of times Peach has been kidnapped by Boweser cannot possibly be just because Peach is unlucky!
there is definityl something going on between the two...

You can add NSMBWii to that list :) I must say that the majority of these facts are really boring and pointless (Mario having a surname, Mario's hair colour, seriously?!) The Popeye fact is worth knowing though :)

The cd-i games may not be offical a part of the mario series but they were licenced and he does say that they aren't all games and peach/pincess toadstool is kidnapped/held hostage non the less :D
