New Super Mario Bros U introduces new character Nabbit

Plus, all-new modes revealed for Mario game

New Super Mario Bros U will feature a new creature called Nabbit who you have to catch on the world map. Yes, Mario's debut Wii U platformer is the first side-scrolling Mario game since Super Mario World that features a seamless world map with named worlds, courses and hidden exits.

Nabbit, who steals from Toads will appear on this world map and you have to catch this speedy creature in order to get the powerful P-Acorn which enables you to fly continuously throughout a stage.

In other news, Nintendo have revealed new modes for New Super Mario Bros U. Challenge Mode tasks you with completing specific objectives, such as clearing a course without obtaining a single coin or touching the ground.

There are four single-player Challenge categories: Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally and Special which features miscellaneous challenges. There are also Boost Mode challenges for single players. Once you complete a Challenge, New Super Mario Bros U saves a replay of the action so players can show off their accomplishments. Practise this and you could become an expert speed runner. Sounds like good fun.

Coin Battle sees up to four players running through a course and competing to see who can collect the most coins. Another player can also use the Wii U GamePad in Boost Mode to place Boost Blocks to help you grab hard-to-reach coins. You can also use the GamePad to edit and customise the coin layout in dedicated courses. The coin layout can then be saved and played by the players who are using Wii Remote controllers.

What do you think of the new modes?

YES! The one thing that the NSMB series needed was a new character as well as a unique art style, so thankfully, this game looks to be the best in the series!

But after this, no more NSMB games please, Nintendo, if you want to make a mario side-scroller, then give it a new subtitle and a nice art style, with fresh music, power-ups, enemies, gameplay mechanics and mabye a new villan to kidnap Peach?

For some reason, I absolutely love the idea of making your way through a level without getting any coins. Not touching the floor also sounds fun.
It looks a lot more original than expected, and I'm actually getting pretty excited for it!
In fact, I may try and do the Gold Rush DLC pack on NSMB2 without getting any coins. That could be challenging. :D

No it wasn't, it was fun and exciting!
Collect as much coins as possible, but keep to the time limit, it's more tense than it sounds!

I also noticed Bowser Jr.'s scarf. Was the first thing I thought of. Could be Bowser Jr. Kinda lame.

Could be Bowser Jr. Kinda lame.

If it was, then Nintendo would not have told everyone that it is a new character.

Could be a minion of Jr.'s, but I dunno he looks rather cool anyway.
    Excited for this game!

Nice sack....... Someone had to say it :D

Now that's done what do you think is making it bulge so much...... ok ok that was the last one!
But what do you think is in it? Is it going to be squish for shrooms as the decal on it would suggest?
    What is it's purpose?

Oops question answered in op... I just read the text after the picture

All these fun little additions sound like there should be plenty to keep players occupied. That with tried and true Mario platforming perfection could lead us on to a winner.

Loving Nabbit by the way. When the mag gets it's makeover, can we have Nabbit as a mascot or something? Or just having him dotted about on various pages just to make me smile would be nice.
