8. Pikmin 3
What is it? Fans had been holding on for nine years for the latest game in Miyamoto's beautiful strategy series but when it finally arrived on Wii U it had been worth waiting for. The sequel to 2004 GameCube classic Pikmin 2, you take control of three explorers - Alph, Brittany and Charlie - as they travel to Planet PNF-404 to gather fruit for their starving world. Once there, they discover little creatures called Pikmin who they can use to gather fruit and fight off enemies such as Bulborbs. The Red, Blue and Yellow Pikmin from the original are joined by new Rock and Winged Pikmin who can break through glass and fly. You have to complete tasks during the day to avoid your Pikmin being eaten by creatures of the night but, unlike with the original, there isn't a 30-day limit.
What we said: It doesn't make the most of the GamePad's touchscreen but the fact that Pikmin 3 still scores so highly is a testament to the standard of the series. It is such a good concept and general gameplay is executed so perfectly that the lack of online and the slightly undersized main course only succeed in holding it back from true greatness.
Pikmin 3 may not be the all-singing, all dancing, next-gen, touchscreen-heavy offering for which many of us were hoping, but it's still a superb example of what Nintendo does best: beautifully crafted and lovingly tended gameplay that you'll fall in love with... now in HD.
