2. The Wonderful 101
What is it? An amazing action game from Platinum, the developers of games such as Bayonetta, Madworld and Infinite Space. The Wonderful 100 is a group of superheroes united by their mission to fight off an alien invasion and you play as every one of them, simultaneously. The approach is similar, but more ambitious than Pikmin's: pick a weapon and its wielder becomes the leader of the group with every other member automatically swarming behind him or her as they move.
The aliens are terrorising humans with Jiggawatt Bombs, Energy Beams, Ray Guns and Killer Lasers but The Wonderful 100's superpower sees key members fusing the remaining ninety-something into objects. The more heroes you have, the bigger your Unite Fist (achieved by drawing a big circle on the GamePad) will be, the more shells you will have for your Unite Gun and your Unite Sword will become longer. It's a complicated game to explain and it can be baffling at first but stick with it and you'll find the best Wii U game so far.
What we said: The Wonderful 101 is a perfect example of how to turn tens, even hundreds of ideas into a single cohesive whole, a mass of interlocking parts spinning around the player like the group they're controlling onscreen, working together and strengthening each other. It's a beautiful thing and one you rarely see on any console, never mind the Wii U. This is a brilliant action game. This is a brilliant superhero story. This is game design, united.
