New Super Mario Bros U planner Daiki Iwamoto believes the plumber's latest platformer compiles all the best bits from previous Mario games.
Speaking with his fellow developers in this fascinating New Super Mario Bros U video, Iwamoto said: "It feels like we've taken all the best bits from the previous Mario games."
Nintendo also discussed the inspiration for the World Map in the game. "In New Super Mario Bros U we decided to have the whole world map connect together. In the first Super Mario games you would just go from one course to the next but in Super Mario Bros 3 each of the worlds was on a map. By being part of the map, each of the courses meant something. It was really something else.
"In Super Mario World on the SNES, it felt like everything you were doing was in a single world. It felt like you were now part of an actual story. It was a fantastic feeling I wanted to give users the same feeling that I had and so I pushed quite hard for a connected world map in New Super Mario Bros U."
