Stop everything! Did Disney really announce a proper character crossover video game this week?! Meaning characters from the different movies can actually interact with one another... You bet they did! And on top of that it comes with many more features all wrapped up in a fun looking new title known as Disney Infinity!
Being a hardcore Disney fanatic, I'd heard rumours ahead of the announcement about Disney Infinity. A new videogame that would be using the same "toys to life" idea as Skylanders. I'd not allowed myself to be drawn into the Skylanders franchise, mainly because I simply don't have the space for all the awesome figures. I'm very much a completist, which can be a dangerous thing and, as much as I love that little purple dragon, I simply made the decision that if I don't start I won't need to finish! With Disney Infinity, however, it's simply not an option for me and it doesn't take a genius to work out why Disney Infinity is such a great idea!
When it comes to creating unforgettable well loved characters, Disney pulls it off perfectly and with a huge back catalogue already available, it's no wonder why this title was created. Disney will be able to utilise the very strong relationships it has built with children and adults everywhere and I think this makes the figure-collecting much more appealing.
Having a figurine that you can essentially bring to life and integrate into a videogame is already extremely cool but having a figurine that does all that as well as represent your favourite character that you perhaps grew up with is even cooler! But it's more then just owning and playing as your favourite character. The character's whole world comes with them in the form of their own Play Set and we've also been told that the Play Sets will all be different experiences that offer their very own storylines.
Obviously, the whole concept of Disney Infinity has got me excited, but the aspect I'm most excited about, is definitely the Toy Box mode. For what feels like forever, I have always wanted a Disney game where I can mix the characters up.
In Kingdom Hearts, the characters pretty much stayed in their own worlds - there are some small crossovers but only in cutscenes. Then there was Disney Universe, but that only allowed you to dress up in costumes. You weren't actually in control of a proper Disney character.
I love the idea of unlocking characters and toys in the different Play Sets and then being able to bring them into Toy Box mode and really mix things up! This will kind of feel like a virtual Disneyland theme park in the sense that everything magical can come together into one environment. I love that, in the trailer, we see a 21st century character like Mr Incredible holding onto a croquet flamingo from the classic 1951 Alice in Wonderland. In fact, every time I re-watch the trailer I am noticing something new. This is just more proof as to why Disney Infinity can succeed. Disney's stories are forever timeless and people of every age will continue to enjoy and connect with them for years to come.
