The Wii U eShop gets its first big game of 2013 this week when The Cave is released on Wednesday 23 January. It will be joined on the WIi U's digital store by Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth and a Sonic And All Stars Racing Transformed demo while Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition has been reduced.
It's also a good week on the 3DS eShop as Picross e2 is released this Thursday. The sequel to the excellent Picross e is joined by 35 Junior Games and Snowboard Xtreme. This week's Wii download is Babel Rising.
The Cave (Wii U: Sega, £9.99) is the new adventure game from Ron Gilbert, the man behind the humorous Monkey Island series. One of our picks for the best Wii U eShop games for 2013, The Cave begins with you picking your team of three adventures from a group of seven, including a hillbilly, a scientist, a monk and some orphan twins. Following that you explore locations including a subterranean amusement park and a medieval castle, plus a fully armed and ready-to-launch nuclear-tipped ICMB missile. If you liked Zack & Wiki, this could be a Wii U game for you as you explore the Cave, picking up an item (you can only carry one at a time) and using it to solve a puzzle.
Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth (Wii U: Ubisoft, £39.99) is available to download through the Wii U eShop but you can also buy it in the shops. This super hero brawler features 20 different characters including the Avengers Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor, as well as other heroes and villains from the Marvel Universe. You'll use motion gameplay to execute explosive super attacks and unleash devastating special moves as you attempt to defeat the Skrulls.
They are the new games but you can also download a free Sonic And All-Stars Racing Transformed demo this week while Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition will be reduced from £8.99 to £6.29 until 7 February.
Picross e2 (3DS: Jupiter, £4.49) boasts a new navigation feature which, according to Nintendo, will make the 'picture crossword' gameplay even smoother. More importantly, you can expect 150 new puzzles, plus an all new mode known as Micross in which you have to complete a 10x10 grid puzzle in order to reveal a picture of a famous painting.
35 Junior Games (3DS: Cerasus Media, £4.49) is a compilation of games, including Tic-Tac-Toe, Solitaire, Chess, Air Hockey, Darts, and Tournament Pong. Aimed at kids and teens, you can experience these old games in 3D.
Snowboard Xtreme (3DS or DSi: EnjoyUp Games: £1.79 or 200 DSi Points) is a snowboarding game which sees you racing against the clock through a stage filled with danger. You can earn extra time by passing through the flags as you attempt to beat your friends and family on the local ranking and reach number one.
Babel Rising (Wii: Lexis Numerique, 500 Wii Points) is a new WiiWare game in which you have to strike down the heretics who are building the Tower Of Babel. From behind your turret, you can summon the power of earth, wind and fire to defeat them. No, not the 70s funk band....
