Skylanders: Swap Force coming to Wii U and 3DS in the autumn

Over 50 new characters to collect in this year's Skylanders game

A few weeks after Disney Infinity was announced, Activision have responded with Skylanders: Swap Force, the third game in the Skylanders series. With a release date set for the autumn, Skylanders: Swap Force won't be going head to head with Disney's game but fans are being asked to collect more than 50 figures in a new Wii U and 3DS game that encourages you to swap parts of the figures.

However, you can do a lot with these new figures. Swap Force refers to the ability to swap different parts of figures to create all-new Swap Force characters. There are just 16 Swap Force figures but each one can be split at the waist meaning you can swap body parts with other figures.

The parts are connected by a magnet but the important thing is that if you buy all 16 figures, you can create 256 Swap Force characters by swapping parts.

For example, you can take Magna Charge, a tech Skylander with a magnetic head and an energy blaster, and combine his base with Wash Buckler's upper body. Wash Buckler is a pirate with squid tentacles who can fire a pistol, squirt squid ink and swing a cutlass. Wash Buckler is stronger but slower than Magna Charge and by combining the two parts, the new character can use strong attacks as well as Magna Charge's unicycle to take out a harder enemy. According to Vicarious Visions, this will add a new tactical element to the game.

There are Swap Zones which can only be reached by using a certain type of Swap Force character.

As for the story, a volcanic eruption caused these Swap Force characters to be torn apart but, aside from that, we know very little about the adventure which has been developed by Vicarious Visions who made Skylanders for 3DS and ported Skylanders Giants to Wii U. N-Space are developing the 3DS version.

In addition to the new Swap Force characters, there are 16 new Skylanders, including Countdown and Roller Ball. Countdown can can fire rockets from his arms while Roller Brawl is an undead rollerblader who can perform a rolling headbutt.

As for the new versions of old Skylanders, they each have a new pose and boast a new Wow Pow upgrade power.

You can also use your old Skylanders with the game, each of which now have the ability to jump skyward.

As with Disney Infinity, Skylanders: Swap Force comes with a Starter Pack which, in addition to the game, includes two Swap Force figures, one regular Skylander, the all-new Portal Of Power plus stickers and a poster.

How many more Skylanders games (aka those games that keep costing you) are they going to release before the parents chuck the little kids consoles out the window?

Well, to be fair to the game, at least this time if you buy 2 figures, you have essentially got 4 thanks to the swapping gimmick. Unless they end up costing a bomb.

Activision : leading the way in originality, innovation and quality.

I was interested up until I read the word N-Space. Although to be fair, they will be stuck to a strict guideline.
So, in all honesty, I lost interest after the work Skylanders. We've already had too many, and this does nothing to help except reel Activision even more profits, especially since you need to buy the NEW Portal of Power NFC reader. Looking on GAME the figures are Ł8-Ł20, which booster packs costing anywhere from Ł40-80.

    FUMING

As a parent of a 6 year old who last year wanted skylanders spyro and had all the characters to go with it, this year he wanted the skylanders giants! He got this for christmas and all the giant figures and all small figures to go with it (44) in all, recently getting the latest thumpback and eye-brawl which we had to get as import from america as they took so long to come to UK, they cost a fortune which i didnt mind untill now. But over Ł400 worth of skylanders later, hes seen these new swap figures, i thought fair enough, something different....... Then i heard another portal!!!! Are they taking the p*ss????? And also not on the actual wii, has to be on Wii U!!! Very very clever, but im sure you will find it to be a flop and parents in the right mind will NOT be buying this after the others, no matter how good!!!!! ANNOYED!!!!

An innovative idea gone crazy. a good gimmick with the swap idea, but falls short at price.
