It's award season. Time for film, music and, yes, games fans to argue about the winners and nominees. On Sunday we had the real BAFTA awards and The Grammys and in 12 days time it will be The Oscars. The Brits will fall in between but they don't really count and this morning we received the nominations for the video game edition of the BAFTAs.
These awards shows rarely please everyone. I was amazed when Mumford & Sons won best album at the The Grammys and, even worse, I noticed that Olly Murs has been nominated for best male solo artist in The Brits. I told you they don't really count.
In a bid to show that the Oscars don't get it right, film critic Mark Kermode even has his own awards (The Kermodes) for the films, actors and directors who missed out on a nomination. Little did I know that The ONM Awards would be our own version of The Kermodes. For Nintendo have not received a single nomination in the BAFTAs.
If I had my way Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask would win the best game of 2012 but I'm not suggesting that the professor's latest puzzler should take the place of Dishonored or Journey in the Best Game category but surely Nintendo games deserved a bit of recognition in the Family or Mobile & Handheld categories.
The Family category includes LEGO Batman and Lord Of The Rings, Skylanders Giants and Just Dance 4, none of which offer anything particularly new. Surely a game like Nintendo Land which is innovative, a brilliant multiplayer game and great fun for all the family should get a nod. Indeed, it could also get a shout in multiplayer and innovation categories. And if we're nominating more LEGO and Just Dance games, why not New Super Mario Bros U, a game that features five-player platforming?
As for Mobile & Handheld, maybe I'm not qualified to judge. You see, I've never played Super Monsters Ate My Condo but I would be surprised if it is better than Kid Icarus: Uprising or Resident Evil Revelations. Anyway, do you think Nintendo were harshly treated in the BAFTA nominations? Which games do you think deserve a nomination?
