WayForward behind new Smurfs 2 Wii U game - first trailer

First look at the new game from Mighty Switch Force developers

The Smurfs 2 is a platformer based on the forthcoming movie. With a release date set for July, it will coincide with the release of the film, a sequel to the hugely successful 2011 movie. You play as a Smurf, travelling from the Smurf Village to New York, Paris, the Arctic Tundra and a Lava Jungle.

You can play on your own or with friends in a co-op mode and the Wii U version boasts a five-player mode which lets one player control a Clockwork Smurf on the Wii U GamePad.

Each Smurf has their own unique special ability to use when navigating through more than 30 levels set in six different worlds. Papa Smurf can throw magic potions to stun the enemies, Grouchy Smurf stomps on enemies while Vanity Smurf poses to provide a platform for other players to reach hard-to-get items. You'll need all these moves in the battle against enemies such as Azrael, Gargamel the Evil Wizard and Gargamel's Naughties.

Take a look at the screenshots below.

Hopefully it isn't' like that Smurf's game where you touch a piece of grass and die. Look it up.

Even though Wayforward are capable of making great games, I don't think it's the developer that causes movie tie-ins to be generally poor. I predict even Wayforward will struggle to create a great game when stifled by the movie producers' regulations and their strict timetable.
