Pikmin 3 enters the UK chart at number two

Good start for Nintendo's big Wii U game

Pikmin 3 has gone straight into the UK chart at number two, ahead of games such as The Last Of Us, FIFA 13 and Tomb Raider.

It couldn't beat Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition but it has been a great week for Nintendo with three of its games in the top 10. Animal Crossing: New Leaf stayed at number four while Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros is just one place behind at five.

New Super Luigi U - which was released in the shops last week - just missed out on a top 10 spot (it entered the all-format chart at number 13) but went in at number two in the Wii U chart.

Nintendo occupying 60% of the top 5? Now that really has put the cat among the pigeons.

This is outstanding news! It should give all the Nintendo haters something decent to talk about now.

To further add to the defence, Pikmin 3 has been released for only three days (though two as of the charts' compilation).

If the game peaks at #1 next week, then there will be cause for concern (although not by us). I doubt that will happen though.

I assumed the article title implied that Pikmin 3 was no. 2 in the Wii U chart, not all-format.

I like to think that this marks the start for the rise of Wii U's sales. I mean, it can only get better, right?

I looked up the some statistics on Minecraft beating Pikmin 3 to the number one spot, even though it's been 5th and 6th for the last few weeks. Apparently there was a 74% sales surge of Minecraft randomly this week... I mean what are the chances of that?!?

@Sumas_Killer Pikmin3 was No.2 in the all format charts.

Yeah I know. What I meant was I was surprised it made it as high as no. 2 in the all-format chart, rather than coming like 9th and only 2nd the Wii U chart or something like that.

Brilliant news, hopefully this means the Wii U fortunes are changing. Also not bad for Luigi, considering it's already been released on E-shop for over a month,.

To further add to the further defence, those charts still don't count downloads. Given GAME sold Pikmin 3 codes cheaper than the eShop/physical release, there are probably a reasonable amount of people that downloaded it. I know Minecraft is downloadable too, but I'd have thought most people that wanted it by download would've got it in previous weeks.

No idea how much that'd change things of course, but it's worth considering :)

I couldn't tell you one way or the other in regards to that, so you could be right. I've always maintained an opinion that digital sales do not count to the GFK Chart. Mind you, if GAME were selling download codes, that would 'technically' count as a 'retail' sale, albeit not of a 'physical' copy of the game. Having said that, eShop purchases would also count in such a regard, so yeah, further evidence it doesn't include digital sales.

If the GFK Chart did include digital sales, I wonder where the 30p VC promo's would have stacked up, as well as Earthbound for that matter, given it did go straight to the top of the eShop charts upon release. Definitely worth pondering over.

This is actually really good news for Nintendo, and seems surprising given how few Wii U's have been sold.

I mean, to outsell The Last of Us (considering how many more PS3's there are than Wii U's), this must mean that nearly everyone with a Wii U in the UK now owns Pikmin 3, which is great news for the title.

    Really is super news!

The main thing to watch for is how well it performs in the following weeks. Pikmin still seems to be one of Nintendo's most niche titles, and it remains to be seen if it'll have any staying power after a storm of launch sales that are probably this big just because Wii U owners finally have a new game to buy. Still, next month is quiet except for Tales of Xillia, so I don't expect that Top 10 will change much before we reach September.

Also, who buys Minecraft on a console? I mean, really now?

  20. Space Arena Monday 29th Jul 2013 at 21:22

Okay Nintendo where is Pikmin 4? I've been waiting for it for 2 whole days! I can't wait any longer! I need to play more Pikmin!

  21. Kirby8 Monday 29th Jul 2013 at 23:06

To all those journalists and others out there who was adamant that the Wii U was dead...shove this in your pipe and smoke it!! Happy days for the Wii U! Loving Pikmin 3...sooo hooked! I think this marks the beginning of the Wii U's meteoric rise..it's like the 3DS all over again. Rocky starts for both, but the 3DS picked it up and hope the Wii U does too and they both go on to be big successes! Let's own this generation again Nintendo!

The WiiuU is here to stay and over its lifetime we will see Ninty exclusives that will shine through the mirk and muddy waters of any competition.Pikmin is a starter for some unique and exciting releases on WiiU.
