Does this Smash Bros Wii U screenshot show off a Super Mario Galaxy stage?

Fans believe that the starry sky behind Kirby points to a Galaxy level...

Fans have been discussing the possibility of a Super Mario Galaxy stage after Sakurai posted a new Smash Bros Wii U screenshot on Miiverse.

The screenshot shows Kirby holding a hammer, prompting Sakurai to post the following message on Miiverse: "Isn't Kirby drawn with a familiar artsy style?"

However, it is the background that has intrigued Smash Bros fans, with many believing it shows the pink blob in space. Jesse posted: "The highlights and stars is very Mario Galaxy!"

Waver wrote: "My hunch is Super Mario Galaxy. The characters are quite shiny in that game. Similar to how Kirby looks here."

Kostaras added: "The sky in this picture looks like the Super Mario Galaxy sky.Just compare them and you'll see what I mean."

Okay, we will...

Dual meaning of the word 'with', perhaps. I.e. drawn next to a familiar art style, implying the background is the familiar bit?

Looks extremely likely, am excited about there being a stage (though thinking about it it was already a pretty likely possibility). It would be great if it ran a system a bit like Norfair, where instead of getting into a shelter you got into a star cannon, ready to be blasted between planets.

Perhaps round gravity effects would be cool too.

I think it's fairly likely to be a Galaxy stage.

I'm just a bit apprehensive about the gravity effects they'll no doubt include in it. It feels cheap and awkward to me when the stage messes with the gravity, and it'd be a shame for such an iconic stage to be ruined by it.

The Smash Bros. news is trickling in... albeit slowly, but still...

I think it could work. Imagine if you will, the Planet Zebes: Brinstar Depths stage from Melee. Now, instead of the stage spinning round and the characters falling to their deaths when they get caught off guard, the stage itself has gravity. So you can run around the whole stage, and the only way to KO someone would be to knock them 'upwards'. It's an interesting idea because it eliminates certain tactics such as using Kirby to swallow an opponent then falling off the stage... Because you can't 'fall off' this stage.

It wouldn't surprise me if this Galaxy stage took place on the iconic Gateway Galaxy starting planet, and in the background you can see various other planets such as the Yoshi Egg shaped Good Egg Galaxy planet, etc. It'd be nice to see references to other Mario characters such as the Toad Brigade and Rosalina in the background as well. And maybe some of the bosses from the game, if it were a travelling stage, which sees characters scrambling to a Warp Star before a planet gets destroyed by a Black Hole or something like that. That'd be nice.

I think you'd have a better article here if you included other people's opinions. Some users suggested that it's the background of a Final Destination, Star Fox or Kirby stage. I think it will be a Kirby stage, possibly atop Magolor's ship.

Could be the most beautiful stage to date. There SO MUCH you can do with Mario Galaxy in Smash bros.
Like a ride round all the planets. OMGoodness please.

You mean this isn't a stage based on Disaster:Day of Crisis?

Nah, it's likely a SMG stage...

This level looks awesome! You can really see that Nintendo want to push the Wii U.

The background definitely looks like something out of Super Mario Galaxy. Chances are it'll probably be the Comet Observatory, since that was pretty much always shown with the starry backdrop. It's a shame though, since I think many fans of Galaxy would've liked a stage based on Gusty Garden (I certainly would have).

Doesn't anyone else think that Sakurai was referring to Kirby's 'familiar artsy style' looking like the art of 'Kirby: Right Back at ya!'?

That is exactly what I thought. Imena, that's the most recent Kirby thing we've had.

If this is indeed a galaxy stage, I hope this points to a SMG3! That would make life better. It would set balance t the universe and create world peace. Though if its not a hint towards galaxy 3 I still love this stage from the game of my childhood :D

People are drawing conclusion from that?

It's Smash Bros. People draw conclusions from the tiniest of details. It was like that with Brawl, and it's no different now.
