Nintendo President Satoru Iwata hailed the Japanese sales figures in a presentation to investors. "Even Game Boy Advance or Wii, which people described as massive hits in the past, or any system from other manufacturers, never achieved annual sales of more than five million units in Japan in history.

"In the history of Japanese video games, this mark was surpassed by only two platforms, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS. To achieve sales of over five million units in the Japanese market, you can see that one requires true momentum."

With games such as Monster Hunter 4, Pokemon X and Y, Tomodachi Collection and Animal Crossing: New Leaf being released in 2013, it have been a momentous year for 3DS in Japan.

Find it rather funny that, near the start of 2012, people were worried about the 3DS's future. It sure has turned around once third party support and the big names started boosting the console. Let's hope the same happens for the WiiU
