New Smash Bros. Wii U screenshot reveals Super Mario Galaxy stage

Cue excitable weeping

Not content to be outdone by Shigeru "we might have some more Galaxy one day, who knows?" Miyamoto, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai used his Miiverse pic of the day to give us a little more than vague hint - Galaxy's made the HD transition in the form of a new stage.

Not only is it a spherical space for fictional punching but, as Sakurai explained, it uses Galaxy's unique take on gravity to change how the game plays out: "A new stage, Mario Galaxy!! The pull of gravity emanates from the center of the planet, so this will require using brand-new tactics."

He followed that up with a second screenshot, which describes "what happens when you stand by the edges. Vertical jumps and getting hit upward will shoot you up diagonally."

Is it too much to hope that smashing someone into space leads to a Gravity-esque interlude, where Mario goes all Sandra Bullock?

Will be very interesting to see if it's a full circle, but it looks nice either way!

    Looks rubbish...

...Ah, who am I kidding? It looks nice. Shame we can't see any gameplay of it so we can see how the stage works but still, all cool from from where I'm standing...

    8) <----Artists impression of said coolness.

I hope they use a gimmick so that you can perhaps smash somebody around the globe, then smash them again as they come around, a sort of spherical juggle, if you will.

It would't be new Smash Bros news without Carnivine Chaos pretending to be some sort of ultra professional player  Lighten up, the stage looks cool!

Definitely looking forward to playing this stage. Would like to learn a bit more about the mechanics of it though, particularly the way gravity will work on it, as well as if Lubba's ship or anything else in the background will act as extra platforms and/or hazards.

as i like the idea, how will we knock people of the stage?we will have to shoot them up,it would be hard to just shoot up all that way,yet if it goes all the way we could have great tag games

It was never really in doubt whether there would be a Galaxy stage, but I feel relived now that it's been announced. I can already see it being my most played stage.

If there isn't a way to send another player into orbit, I'll be deeply saddened.

Looking at TheImprobableOne's avatar, I'm reminded ROB hasn't been announced. That means whatever you want it to. 8)
